    Pacers Trade Deadline Wrap-Up:
    Jared Wade (8p9s)

In December, the Pacers used the amnesty provision, a one-time forgiveness
to remove one playerís contract from your teamís book for salary cap purposes
allowable under the leagueís new collective bargaining agreement, on James
Posey. Then, with his onerous $7.1 million deal instantly turned into cap space,
    Larry Bird did...nothing.

Many presumed the new-found money would be used to fill one of the teamís
needs, the most glaring of which seemed to be a scorer in the back court. They
(sorta) tried to woo Jamal Crawford, for instance, with no success. There was a
lot of talk surrounding Indiana trading for OJ Mayo, but again no dice. Bird was
seemingly unwilling to pay a price that he thought was too high to for anyone
    on the market.

Many fans were disappointed. But Bird has said that there could be significant
benefits to being below the salary cap even during the season. And now weíre
seeing that in action as Bird just swung a deal in which he gave up essentially
nothing (a second-round pick) to acquire instant-offense combo guard Leandro
    Barbosa from the Toronto Raptors.

Being below the salary cap by roughly $14 million meant that Bird was able to
absorb Barbosaís contract, which is an expiring $7.6 million that ends after
this season, without having to send back any salary to the Raptors, whose
motivation for unloading the Brazilian Blur was likely that they are no longer
really trying to win games this season, donít see him as a long-term part of
their future, and were attempting to lower payroll expenses.

While it was a savvy move to sit on this cap space and wait for the right deal,
it is not immediately apparent how the former Sixth Man of the Year Award
winner will fit into the Pacers rotation...CONTINUE READING 8p9s
Zack Lowe (SI's The Point Forward)

The Pacers entered deadline day with about $14.3 million in cap space, the
most in the league, meaning they could absorb salary up to that amount
without sending out any player salary in return. They have decided to use
more than half of that to swallow up Leandro Barbosaís $7.6 million expiring
contract in exchange for a second-round draft pick in order to (in theory)
prop up an offense that has ranked as average or worse in points per
    possession all season.

Barbosa, a combo guard who can still score in isolation and via the pick-and-
roll, will display some occasionally nutty shot selection and joins a crowded
guard/wing rotation that already includes Darren Collison, Paul George, George
Hill, A.J. Price, Dahntay Jones (who can and does swing to small forward) and
(until recently) Lance Stephenson. The Pacers really donít know what kind of
offense theyíll get from any of these guys on a night-to-night basis, Barbosa
simply adds another ďroll the diceĒ piece to Frank Vogelís arsenal.

Barbosa is fading with age; he has attempted 5.1 long two-point jumpers per
40 minutes this season, by far the highest number of his career, and he has
hit a horrid 28 percent of those shots. He doesnít get to the rim as often as
he used to. He will take at least one maddening off-the-dribble jumper
while nearly falling out of bounds every game. At 6-foot-3, he is probably a
below-average defender at this point and can struggle against the bigger
and physical shooting guards in the league.

He is also not a point guard, even if the Raptors have tried him there in very,
very limited minutes this season. And point guard is where Indiana can
really use some help. Collisonís development has been uneven on both
ends, and Hillís game...CONTINUE READING THE POINT FORWARD
    Mark Deeks (The Basketball Jones)

Todayís other completed trade, thus far, sees another salary dump. Indianaís
swaths of unused cap space have just been used on someone other than Chris
Kaman, as they trade a future second round pick to Toronto in exchange for
two guards, Leandro Barbosa and Anthony Carter (probably).

The 29-year-old Barbosa played his best basketball a couple of years ago, in
the Seven Seconds or Less era, and hasnít been as productive since it ended.
He canít get to the rim like he once could, prefers the long two to the three for
some reason, and just is not especially efficient for one who shoots so much.
Nevertheless, he still produces highly, to the tune of 12.2 points and absolutely
nothing else per game, a bench scorer so productive that on certain nights this
year that he has carried the Raptors offense to victories on nights that they
probably didnít want their offense carrying them to victories. Itís tough to tank
when your 29-year-old veteran is scoring 17 points in 25 minutes and eking
out wins over fellow tankers. But this is what Barbosa does, and in adding a
high caliber sixth man while subtracting nothing from their incumbent
roster, the Pacers just improved themselves significantly.

Arguably, however, they could have gotten a better rental. And I donít mean
    Chris Kaman.

Indiana is middle of the pack in terms of team points per game, yet they shoot
only 43.2 percent as a team, 5th worst in the league. This is due to a lack of
creative ability in the half-court offense. In spite of the promising start to his
career, Darren Collison has rather tapered off since his trade to Indiana, a very
solid player who just doesnít have the talent level to take a team far as a lead
guard. (The new Jarrett Jack, if you will.) George Hill similarly thrives in a
bench contributor/spot starter role, but he too doesnít have the ability to lead
an elite half-court...CONTINUE READING THE BASKETBALL JONES
    This is the darkest timeline.

I swear, if Denari says "Linsanity" one more time, I'm driving to New York and punching him in the face. And it's not even tip-off yet.

Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!
