I'd be a lot more bummed if I didn't see this coming for the last 6 months.

I'm also cool with it because the Colts aren't winning anything for a few years. This gives Peyton his best chance to finish his career strong. I'm going to immediately be a fan of whatever team he goes to.

    ESPN.com news services

Peyton Manning's 14-year career as a member of the Indianapolis Colts is coming to an end.

Sources close to the team told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the announcement will come at a press conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday with both Manning and owner Jim Irsay in attendance.

The decision to pass on the $28 million bonus owed Manning and not to pick up the four remaining years on his contract means Manning will become a free agent, and sources told Mortensen that he intends to continue to play.

The four-time league MVP missed the entire 2011 season after having his third neck surgery in 19 months, a fusion of two vertebrae. His doctors have medically cleared him to resume his career and Manning has increased his throwing regimen.

Several sources have told ESPN during the past month that Manning's throwing strength has dramatically improved as his nerves continue to regenerate following his latest neck surgery Sept. 8. Dr. Robert Watkins, who performed the single-level cervical fusion, has stated publicly that he has cleared Manning to resume his playing career.

Manning has broken all of Indianapolis' career records for quarterbacks and had never missed a start before last season. He's taken the Colts to the playoffs 11 times, captured seven AFC South titles in eight years, won two AFC championships, one Super Bowl title and a Super Bowl MVP Award.

The Colts have the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft and are likely to draft former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck or former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Seriously doubt that happens. Say good bye to an era.

Of course they "could", but don't you think Irsay and Peyton have discussed that by now?

It doesn't hurt at all. I love the fact that we got to see Peyton play here. But I've really been resigned to this outcome since about week 4 of this past season.

Is it so Colts fans can tar and feather him?
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

They said on the news that they tried to renegotiate the contract and signing bonus and Manning refused.

I don't see that the Colts had much of a choice, you can't pay someone 28 million not knowing if he'll ever be the same.

If Manning signed with the Dolphins then he would return to Indy this season as we host them. Whoa.

And you'll see the greatest display of affection any crowd has ever showered on any opposing player ever. I have no doubt you won't hear a single boo in the place.

I have come to terms with this situation for a long time now, anyone who didn't see the writing on the wall was only fooling themselves honestly. I hold no ill will towards this decision it is what it is. He gave us the best 14 seasons we could have ever dreamed of and now that it looks like that it is over and he is deciding to continue to compete I wish him nothing but success going forward. class act.

It just shouldn't have ended this way. If Polian would've done a better job it wouldn't have ended this way.

Assuming Manning refused to renegotiate then circumstances dictated Irsay had no choice.

Tomorrow will be a sad day for the franchise if the reports are true.

Mike Chappell is saying it's still not official and that Manning and Irsay are sharing a flight from Florida to Indy. Says it's likely though that they are going in a different direction.

@mchappell51: Irsay/Manning sharing flight back to Indy from FL and will continue dialogue. But end game likely will be each going in different direction.

This almost felt like Reggie's last game as a Pacers

Feeling's a little different since he'll still be playing but with a different uni but definitely a sad day in Indy

It's a shame he played for an organization with such a flawed philosophy. Peyton deserved more than the one Super Bowl he won here.

Thanks for the memories Peyton. Look forward to seeing you hoist up one more Lombardi before all is said and done. Just don't go to Miami because it won't happen for you there.

I don't care what anyone else says --Peyton is the greatest QB of all time. No one ever carried a team the way he did for so long.

Not even close to surprising, but still sad all the same.

Thank you for the memories and everything you've done for us, Peyton. I will definitely root for you wherever you end up.

Exactly, no colt fan could ever root against him.

I hope Grigson has learned one thing that no matter how great your QB may be his backup must be lots better than the Sorgi/Painter types we've had for so long. What was Polian thinking?
