Default Colts and Mathis agree to long-term deal

    http://www.indystar.com/article/20120305/SPORTS03/120305036/Indianapolis-Colts-slap-franchise-tag-DE-Robert-Mathis?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|IndyStar.com

Mathis and the Colts are still waiting to hammer out a contract extension, so the franchise tag was placed on Mathis because they couldn't finalize the long-term deal by 4:00 PM today (The franchise tag deadline) so they put used it on him and are expected to have a contract shortly.

I think it's a good deal. Mathis was probably the next guy up on the Colts priorities after Manning.

Like to see Manning re-signed, Garcon and Wayne, but all three is unfortunately unlikely.

Mathis just wrote on twitter that he is still bleeding blue, so I think they have official came to a contract agreement, but just have not released all of the information yet.

I am happy he is back, hopefully he can be dominate in his new role as well..

Basically this is what I thought would happen. Mathis gets the tag and Wayne probably walks. Once the Manning thing is behind us we should know what else can be done under the cap.

Freeney is 32 and I think he only has about 2 more good years left in him as well...

Jerry Hughes will probably take over for Freeney after next year...

It won't matter because he won't see the 5th if his production drops. My guess is that they gave him 5 years 10 million per back loaded and they probably held off until the Manning thing is resolved so they can budget the salary cap.

Good deal, he is one of my favorite players and I think he could transition better to the 3-4 than Freeney. Also did anyone notice that the Steelers are cutting Farrior? He could come in if it were on the cheaper side and impact with the 3-4 right away. I don't think Freeney would be bad, but I think transitioning to the 3-4 may be a little tougher for him coverage wise.

We should know soon...depends on how much is guaranteed though... but yup Freeney had a 6 yr 72 million so I am sure that Mathis wanted something at around the 10million dollar range..

The Steelers are trying to make room for MIke Wallace next contract and currently they have around 126 million on the books. They were in pretty bad shape salary cap wise and had to restucture some contract which shaved off 29 million and they are still near the max which is just crazy.

Yeah, I know... and I doubt that they will be able to keep him, I am sure one of those teams near the end of the first will try to grab him, Tom Brady would drowl for a guy like that, just think about when he had Moss...

Freeney also counts about 19 million against the cap which is why I think they should cut him if they want to keep all their FA's.

Edit: Don't the Pats have to pay Welker too?

How much would count towards the cap if they cut him?

He has 5 million guaranteed, I thought about cutting him as well, but I think we will have to pay the 5 no matter what, we should try to trade him for a 4th/5th round pick I doubt we could get a 3rd for him... with the contract he has and all.

The 5 million is dead money which would still count against the cap even if they trade him. He won't be going anywhere IMO but I think if they keep Manning they should cut him to make room for Gracon and the other FA's.

Franchised. But, most of these tags are used as a way to say 'hang on we can work something out'.

The Colts use it frequently, but the last guy to actually play a season under the tag was Edge (?).

Yeah, maybe he could restructure, I believe Peyton did that a couple of times.

Very happy we resigned Mathis, he is a great guy and very good football player. It's gonna be a little sad going away from the 4-3 Freeney/Mathis rush game.. But I think it will be nice to have a 3-4 with Mathis playing LB.

I still think Dwight needs to be traded.. Love the guy but he just doesn't fit a 3-4 at all. he's too good with his hand down on the ground, but doesn't fit well as a 3-4 DE either.

Yeah, now we have more than 30 million tied up this year in two DEs who are over 30.

With a defense that is STILL going to get ran on 80% of the time...

I like Mathis a lot, but if we're completely rebuilding then I wouldn't have had a problem with just letting him go. If we didn't re-sign any of these old guys then wouldn't we eventually have had some decent cap room? Then we could have maybe looked into signing a young FA at about the time Luck was a couple of years in.

Well, I actually think they have done something good here. It looks like Freeney is going to be the odd man out. There's no way they are going to keep him at 14 million if they're switching to 3-4. Freeney is useless in that formation. Mathis is not. His skillset is MUCH more adaptable to the 3-4 than Freeney. Now, they might be able to talk Freeney into taking less money but I doubt it. He'll also have a lesser role, maybe only playing a bit more than half the defensive snaps. Freeney will have to go if he wants to have a similar role and keep his pay as high as he can. If I were to venture a guess on Freeney, I'd say the Giants, Philly, Jacksonville or Tennessee. He'd be absolutely deadly with the Giants.
