Default NBA approves 4 year extension for Eric Gordon

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slu...ern_nba_012312

The New Orleans Hornets have made guard Eric Gordon a four-year contract extension after receiving authorization from the NBA, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Gordon and the Hornets have until the end of Wednesday to reach a contract extension or he will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Gordon had told Yahoo! Sports on Monday that he was waiting to learn whether NBA commissioner David Stern would grant him a contract extension before the deadline. Gordon said he was informed by Hornets general manager Dell Demps that it was up to Stern to decide whether to extend an offer. The NBA owns the Hornets.

“In terms of my contract extension, Dell Demps indicated that it’s out of his control and NBA commissioner David Stern has the last determination on the contract extension,” said Gordon, who will be a restricted free agent this summer if he doesn’t sign an extension.

Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 2012 first-round pick were acquired by the Hornets in the trade that sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers last month. The NBA gave approval to that trade after previously vetoing a deal that would have sent Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers. Stern has publicly expressed optimism that a Louisiana-based owner will buy the Hornets by midyear.

Gordon has played in only two games for the Hornets because of a bruised right knee. He averaged 21 points in the two games. Gordon said he was evaluated by a team-appointed doctor in New York on Monday, and was told his right knee had no structural damage. The doctor, Gordon said, recommended he return to basketball activities in three weeks.

“The doctor said my knee will be 100 percent sound with rest,” Gordon said.

Gordon, 23, hasn’t been in New Orleans long, but is enthusiastic about the opportunity to play under Demps and coach Monty Williams.

“I just hope a deal gets done before the deadline,” Gordon said.

I'm more excited by Eric Gordon, the defender, than I am by Eric Gordon, the scorer. This was, a year ago, a chillingly strong individual defensive player on the perimeter.

Gordon's strongest aspect of isolation defense was his hands. Opponents turned the ball over to Gordon on almost 25% of the 97 instances that he was isolated defensively. Gordon's a gambler in this sense, but in a very different fashion than we've been accustomed to. Where Chris Paul gambled for steals at the expense of penetration, Eric Gordon very rarely swiped unless he was completely set in front of an offensive player and able to react laterally if he missed. His gambling came more in the form of personal fouls; while his overall foul count (2.3 pf/36 minutes) was tiny, the majority of his more egregious fouls came in this setting. Ultimately, Gordon's rate of a foul and a half per steal was a tradeoff worth making, even if it's worth keeping an eye on in late shot clock situations going forward.

(this is why he played over people at the worlds and why he may get on the Olympic team)

His strength as a scorer lay both in his efficiency and his versatility. The play he's arguably been most associated with since his arrival in New Orleans, the isolation, was only his third most utilized half-court possession type in 2011. Gordon was remarkably efficient at running the pick and roll; per Synergy Sports, Gordon scored 0.94 points per P&R possession, a shade lower than the 0.97 mark of the Hornets' Chris Paul.

He scored efficiently off of cuts and screens and even showed a reasonable off-ball post game, pinning small defenders deep in the post before catching.

Gordon's season was remarkable. Before 2010-2011, ten players in the modern era had posted seasons with usage rates over 25% and offensive efficiencies over 110 - Chris Paul, Amar'e Stoudemire, Chris Bosh, Shaquille O'Neal, LeBron James, Terry Cummings, Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, and Michael Jordan.Every single one of those players was a multiple-time All-Star selection. Gordon proved that he could maintain high efficiency while shouldering heavy offensive responsibility, the best way to define, despite Carmelo Anthony's ostensible protests to the contrary, an offensive NBA star.

Yep clearly Eric Gordon is a poor man's Marcus Thornton folks

I swear I feel like this article reads my mind about how good EJ was last season very good read. Scary thing is EJ's defense is better than his offense.

If healthy there is no doubt Eric is a max level guy or near it. He will likely be getting a max offer and will take it. He may wait and get the 5th year though (I doubt it though he will take 4 if the money is right)

We don't know what kind of extension offer was approved. It could've been 4 years $16M. We'll know soon.

Two things, I believe the extension will be at least 10 million a year, 2nd with regards to the stuff about how good Gordon is and "If he can stay healthy", that IF is a big one, this guy gets hurt way to often.
    Why so SERIOUS

    my guess

is it will be 4yrs 45-55m

which is fair to the Hornets and the player option makes it fair for Eric.

with a player option on the 4th year(he would opt out if healthy because then he would be a 7yr vet and could get a bigger deal with the experience rule. This will be key IMO of getting the deal done

Kevin Love did the same thing with his deal I expect EJ to really go hard for the player option

The Pacers don't usually go after restricted free agents, but you can expect them to pursue Gordon this summer.

Hornets offered 4-year deal to Gordon after getting NBA clearance Tues. Expect Pacers to make run at the Indianapolis native in off-season.

If next year we end up with Eric Gordon, a veteran for the MLE, our picks, and Roy and Hill extended we will be living large and in charge. Like ridiculously large and in charge. Imagine this team plus Eric Gordon, a smashmouth guy with elite offensive abilities, a veteran, some more young guys, and an improved core...

He seems to be injury prone, even dating back to his year at IU when he hurt his wrist.

62, 56, 2. That's the number of games he has played in his last 3 seasons, after 78 his rookie year.

    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/75...ree-more-weeks

Eric Gordon out at least 3 more weeks

    Associated Press
OKLAHOMA CITY -- New Orleans guard Eric Gordon will miss at least another three weeks as he recovers from a bruised right knee.

"Eric is going to probably be out for another three weeks," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said Wednesday night before the Hornets faced the Thunder. "We will re-evaluate after that time. Doctors think he needs more time. It's prudent for us as an organization is to make sure he's right before he comes back."

    Gordon
Gordon came to New Orleans as part of a multiplayer trade shortly before the regular season that sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Because of the bruised knee, Gordon has played in only two games this season, including New Orleans' season opener, when he hit the winning shot to cap a 20-point outing in Phoenix. He bruised his right knee in that game and attempted a comeback on Jan. 4, when he scored 22 points in a loss to Philadelphia.

Gordon averaged 22.3 points last season, his third as a pro since being selected seventh overall out of Indiana in the 2008 NBA draft.

Gordon would be a restricted free agent after this season if he does not sign an extension with New Orleans by midnight. Hornets officials didn't say what they were going to do with Gordon's contract about an hour before their game in Oklahoma City.

The Hornets are 1-1 in games Gordon has played and 2-13 in games he has missed. While New Orleans has played good enough defense to remain competitive in most of its games, playing without Gordon's scoring punch has hurt in crunch time. Of New Orleans' 14 losses, 10 have come by single digits, including three-straight two-point losses.

That you guys keep repeating the same thing over and over again, the "this guy is not good in our team because he is not smash mouth" or the "this guy is perfect for this team because he is smash mouth" I don't even know if you guys know wtf "smash mouth" is? Nash is not "smash mouth" but EJ is "smash mouth"?

How about talk about their games instead of making some fake "smash mouth" evaluation? that would be nice.

I don't understand why we'd go after Eric Gordon if the Hornets would just match anything we throw out there. Wouldn't it be better to just wait a year and hope he takes the one year qualifier from the Hornets?
