    Default Point Guard Update.....

    Written by Mike Wells

    Point guard update

Lance Stephenson, who scored a career-high 12 points against the Hawks, will continue to get playing time, but it will be mainly at shooting guard.
Starter Darren Collison and backup George Hill will be the point guards when they are on the court with Stephenson.

Vogel will run plays with Stephenson handling the ball, but his primary role will be at shooting guard.

In other news, Danny's lockout lunch with BLF workers is going to be Sunday......

glad they are playing Lance at his natural position. Much easier for him to play his natural position than play pg which he looks like a lost puppy at(which to me is to be expected) when he is the only PG on the foor. Good move Vogel.

and good for Danny glad he is keeping his word the workers deserve it.

Ok, fair enough. When Lance and Hill were on the floor together, I considered Lance the PG and Hill the SG. Hill brought the ball up and passed to Lance, who initiated the offense.

Regardless, I haven't yet liked Stephenson/AJ on the floor together, and I'm not sure I'd like Stephenson/Collison. For now, I'd only play Stephenson at the 2 when Hill was the PG, and I'd still play Hill predominately at the 2.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

For Lance to succeed they need to just let him play with his instincts. He's the only player you can clear-out and run ISO plays for so why not let him do it. He's a player like Von Wafer or Gilbert Arenas (pre-injury). Just give him the ball and get out of the way.

He'll be better in this role. He also is a willing passer and is pretty good at passing off the dribble so if he drives and draws a double-team, he'll try to hit the open man.

Good... even when Lance was a rookie a certain bench coach thought his best position was SG.

Exciting! Maybe this means we'll see a paradigm shift, and Dahntay will be phased out while PG is phased in more.

Great to see that. He's definitely a SG and while he's out there, Hill is better at the point.

He and Hill played off each other nicely Wednesday and I expect solid scoring from both moving forward.

Also, nice to see what Danny's doing.

I still don't get what the big deal about whether or not you call him a 1 or a 2.

The style at which Lance plays isn't going to change. The only difference is that Lance won't have the ball in his hands as much.

My man you read my mind before I posted it

Some times players dont fit in that nice little box.

Is G Hill a PG or SG? How about Chauncey Billiups? or Dwayne Wade? Derrick Rose even?

Lance might not be your "typical" PG but he is best with the ball in his hands attacking the rim

Now is the time to mix rotations and roles. Before the injury bug and before the last stretch. The only hindrance is a possible trade.

I remember a couple years ago on tv it showed Foster at a grade school and children kept asking him how tall he was. He much have looked like a giant to those grade school kids. Each time one would ask Foster would say 6'11". I'm not sure how tall 6' 11" registered with them.

I believe the thought process is with young guys you would like them to concentrate on a single position because it's easier to learn that role than mutiple positions. You've got time later to see if they can expand on that.

    And that's an important difference.

He can't run an offense. That's what point guards do. So instead of always having the ball in his hands, the point guard will be able to pick and chose when Lance has the ball. So in other words, the point guard will pick and chose when Stephenson attacks with the ball.

The problem is Hill should be playing primarily the 2 as well, but I'd guess it's going to be 15 minutes at point and 15 minutes off ball.

DC and Lance, looking at the skillset. Shouldn't work, but I think he'll only be playing with Hill. Lance and AJ should work, but really haven't at all.

Still, a good decision by Vogel or Larry.

We're told constantly that DC is a SG in a PGs body. GH also plays the two.

So from where I'm sitting, we have 4 players that play both PG/SG depending the situation, and bickering back and forth between who is a PG and who is a SG is just a way to bicker back and forth.

It doesn't change anything on the basketball court.
