    Default John Hollinger Chat 01/12/12

John Hollinger Chat is on right now

    http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/42058

    Casey (Indianapolis, IN)

Can the Pacers win a first round playoff series? Is last night's game vs. an injured Hawks lineup any indication of their talent level?

    John Hollinger (12:16 PM)

My inclination is that they're more likely a one-and-done with this group; I don't like how much the ball sticks offensively. Then again, I have a hard time coming up with four teams I'd guarantee would beat them. And the wild card for Indy is that they can still make dramatic roster upgrades because they're so far under the cap and have assets to put into a trade.
And yeah before anybody accuse me of asking question againts the Pacers, my name is not Casey either.

John Hollinger doesn't know anything about basketball. All he does is rely on his precious stats.

one-and-done? Yeah right, if we somehow grab home court advantage and play Boston, Atlanta, New York or Philly, I am more than optimistic that we'll advance to the 2nd round.. Still bitter that we plucked your Hawks, huh?

    Chad (Denver)

How bout some love for Al Harrington? PS How long is he going to hold up?

    John Hollinger (12:39 PM)

I had folks in Denver telling me he looked great in preseason, that he'd lost weight and was playing excellent. Wasn't sure whether it was preseason hyperbole or not, but clearly he made good use of all the free time he had during the lockout.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mackey was the one asking this question

    Robert (Los Angeles)

Tyler Hansbrough has 2 assists through 10 games and 1 block...do you think he will end up with more assists or blocks at the season's end?

    John Hollinger (12:46 PM)

I saw both his assists! A heartwarming, two-dime flurry in the second quarter of the Philly game. That was exciting stuff. Then against Atlanta last night he turned baseline and tried to dribble through a triple-team. Ugh. I'd still bet on assists, but it's gonna be close.

Based on the response, it's probably more likely that he was the one answering question.

I think that Bird thinks this too and will be looking to make a move to get another quality scoring Wing to replace Inferno in the lineup and ( possibly ) shore up the Frontcourt before the trade deadline.

For now, we have settled on Inferno being that additional Wing Man....not because we wanted to...but because we didn't have a choice. Inferno is best suited to be a role Player...as in the guy that you would bring in to try to shutdown or slowdown some Guard that is torching you...but IMHO.....he isn't the type of guy that you want in your primary rotation....he's a great "break in case of emergency" type of guy that is brought in to see if he can address certain situation. Bird's quest to sign JCraw and inquiries into Redd as another shooting option suggests that he isn't satisfied with Inferno as being that guy. In other words...I don't think that he will "settle" with what we have.

We have a solid 7-man core of DC/PG/Granger/DWest/Hibbert/GH/Hansbrough...but beyond that...I think that Bird knows that we have to have depth to grind it out over this shortened by more concentrated season against the Super Teams that don't have the depth and age to keep up. I like that Foster, Inferno and some combination of AJ/Lance will allow us to compete during the regular season....but I don't think that it will get us to the 2nd round. At the very least, I think that the Wing Rotation SHOULD be improved....if there are not good options to improve the Frontcourt...I can live with some combination of Foster/Amundson/Pendegraph to hold down the Frontcourt behind Hibbert/DWest/Hansbrough...but I think that there is room for improvement. Foster is the only guy that I can see as the guy that is a real difference maker...but he can't last the grueling season playing 15-20 mpg on a regular basis...he has to rest.

Improving the 7-man rotation by adding 2 quality Players and pushing players like Inferno and Foster to the bench would give us the necessary depth to truly compete against the SuperTeams.

I believe you're thinking of Simmons. And in any case, Simmons actually likes the Pacers.

Is it weird how I'm considered such a fringe thinker around here, while major national writers tend to agree with me?

I agree as well but it seems for some reason we are in the minority.

Agreed. This team has a chance to win a playoff series, but it's still pretty unlikely, and it's definitely going to depend very heavily on the match-up.

I agree with this for the most part. I wouldn't go as far as saying "pretty unlikely" but we could go out the first round or we could make a run. I think most people on this board think that.

Using a national writer to prove your opinion or disprove someone else's opinion is pointless regardless of your position on any of the topics.

Why? Because they're OPINIONS. Not all national writers agree with each other. So who's right and who is wrong?

The thing is that for many people here the "unlikely part" sounds negative, I'm my opinion all the things he is saying are positive, but again he doesn't have the Pacers winning a championship so is negative.
