    Default (More) computer issues...

So, another laptop has decided to give me a hard time, this time a Gateway.

When I turn it on, it tries to run but never boots. I can hear the fan kick on for about 5 seconds then turn off, which leads me to believe that it could be the heatsink. The screen stays blank the entire time. I swapped out the hard drive, the battery, and the RAM, but none of those seem to be the primary issue (though the HDD boots up in my "test" laptop, but stops and restarts when attempting to load Windows, so that may be another issue as well).

My only thought at this point is the heatsink or, God forbid, the motherboard. I have also heard that some laptops have a connecter that leads to the monitor that can become disconnected, but I can't seem to find it on mine.

    Any thoughts?

I believe I had a similar issue with my PC and it turned out to be the heatsink fan. I thought it was the HD at first and replaced that too. I was so happy it wasn't the motherboard.

I talked to my friend in IT and we both seem to think it's the motherboard. The HDD is fine but the laptop doesn't even detect that it (or anything else, for that matter) is there. Bah.

Any thoughts on HP? Best Buy has a Quad Core, 4G RAM laptop for $400.

I had the same problem with a laptop. Could never figure out exactly what was wrong with it.

HP is not bad. I had a college roommate with one who didn't take care of anything he owned, was dirty, spilled coffee on the laptop a couple of times, and watched copious amounts of porn. Surprisingly the thing held up pretty well.

Got a guy who fixes labtops for a living and he doesn't like Hp's,dells or gateways.

He recommends Asus (2 year warranty) and the cheaper route of lenovo.

Still $400 for a quad core laptop is still one of the lowest prices you can find.

Gizmodo.com usually shows laptop deals each day. I've been scoping them out waiting to find a good deal on a quad core laptop. I'm in no rush to buy a computer right now though. I'm sure there are plenty of good sites to scope out good deals.

Shade, I know Macs are expensive but I would recommend saving up for one even if it takes a period of a couple years. Even if you are only putting 20 bucks or so aside a month I think it is worth it. I saved up for a Mac for two years because I knew it would last a long time and it has been totally worth it. Plus their resale value is very good for any electronic device so if you ever want a new one it isn't as out of reach as it may seem.

Have you checked NewEgg.com for any Toshiba deals?
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

Any suggestions for something in the $800ish range? Ideally, I'd like to get something with video/graphic work in mind.

Resale value? I've tried selling my late-2008 Unibody Aluminum MacBook with 4 GB RAM and Lion on it for over a year with no bites.

    Why?
Are there differnt versions of iPad and what should I be looking for?
Can I print from an iPad?
I already pay for an expensive data plan for my iPhone...do I have to pay for another one for the iPad?

    Thanks D2
