Post Lebron James and the Birthday Cake Saga

LeBron James Didn’t Seem To Think His Birthday Cake Was Worth $3,500

LeBron James had a bit of a problem with his $3,500 birthday cake. No, it had nothing to do with the cost of the cake, but it had everything to do with… Oh, wait, yeah, the cost pretty much had everything to do with it.

When King James’ party people picked up the birthday cake they ordered from a South Beach “mom-and-pop” bakery, they supposedly didn’t seem pleased enough with the effort to tweet and/or pay for the cake.

Apparently, the James people thought that the cake would be free, offering up James’ star power as a way to to provide free publicity for the baker, Alethea Hickman, in exchange for the five-tier birthday cake. What a beautiful world this man lives in.

According to Hickman, though, when the birthday party came and went, her cake never ended up making it onto James’ Twitter account. In fact, the King tweeted photos of another cake that wasn’t Hickman’s. Now, she’s looking for some cash and an explanation as to what went wrong.

Jared Galbut, the party planner working for James, however, did have an explanation for why Hickman on why her cake was slighted.

Galbut said James’ people decided Hickman’s work wasn’t fit for the king: “It just wasn’t what was expected. When LeBron’s people saw it, they just didn’t want to use it and decided to bring their own cake. I can’t tell LeBron James what birthday cake to eat. It’s LeBron James, for Christ’s sake.”

As for how much Galbut would pay Hickman if he were asked, he just said: “That cake couldn’t be worth more than $600. It’s flour, eggs and water.”

Great, now that we know what goes into the cake, it’s probably time to talk about the process of baking, decorating and producing such a massive, fit-for-a-king type of cake. You have to believe that this woman deserves something, right? Even if it’s a tweet with a half-eaten piece of cake. The caption is up to you, King James. But as long as you can say you tweeted a photo of her cake, that should do it, right?

That's a nice cake. $3,500 is a ridiculous price tag though. My guess is that if it was made for you or me, they wouldn't charge that much.

Surely he as smart enough to get a quote for the cake before it was purchased?

If not, he fails common sense 101.

If so, then pay up. Hell, why not just tweet a picture of it and not eat it?

A lot of stupid drama that could easily be avoided, by both James and his people.

What kind of car does LeBron drive? I know he had to take out a loan when he was in HS so he could get that fancy Hummer.

*****ing about the price tag of a cake you ordered is, well, rich.

You're right. If they didn't like the cake they shouldn't have even picked it up.

Okay yeah that does not look like a very good custom cake, what is the white emblem on the front? She could have done more with the gold pearls sticking out the side and placed them all over the different tiers. I'm no baker, but many times the bottom tiers are made of plain old regular cake and and icing. So just because a cake has a bunch of tiers doesn't mean it should cost exponentially more.

The price seems a bit high. But you shouldn't order a cake if you don't plan to pay for it, nor should lady agree to make the cake without some sort of down payment or contract.

Duff Goldman would like a word with this baker.

Any first year business professor would like a word with Mr. James and his people.....

People who can barely afford to pay their bills this month are scratching their head at why this is even news

    First world problems indeed

It's LeBron's logo. It's an "L" and a "J" together to make "LJ." Or I should say a form of his logo. Pretty sure I've seen it elsewhere.

    EDIT: Yep.

What I'm assuming the writer leaves out is that LeBron's people told her LeBron would tweet a picture of the cake in exchange for her not charging them anything. When LeBron tweeted a picture of a different, presumably better looking cake, this cake lady was upset, I think with good reason. We don't know which of LeBron's "people" made the deal with her, or what the exact deal was, because it's a poorly written story.

That cake (in fact, no cake I can think of) is worth anywhere near $3500. Not to mention that the cake is pretty fugly.

3500 is like toilet paper for LBJ. But I agree I wouldn't pay anymore than $100 for cake.

... I really wanted to forgive James for the decision and overall being a jerk and playing the bad guy... And was planning on doing so this year.

But last night im pretty sure he said "F*** the Pacers" at some point in the second half when he was at the free throw line. I refuse to forgive him now, no matter what he says, hes still the villain. Punk, kick a team while their down and show no respect.

I know of peoples wedding cakes who are not that cheap

My fiance loves Ace of Cakes, so I have seen some pricy cakes

Not saying I can afford any of them, though

Everyone knows Bosh runs Lebron's errands, so people should be blaming him for the misunderstanding. Hell, I heard somewhere that he has to do the same kind of stuff for Hansbrough.

Well there she is getting her 15 minutes, just like she wanted. This might've turned out better for her than if he'd taken it and tweeted it.
