Default Steve Nash for Darren Collison - Chad Ford thinks it makes sense

From his ESPN chat happening now.

    http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/41939

    Bill (Phoenix)

Nash -- traded by the deadline?

    Chad Ford (1:10 PM)

Suns have balked in the past because 1. They really love Nash and 2. The offers for Nash haven't blown them away. Of course, it's crunch time now for the Suns. If they don't trade him soon, most likely they lose him for nothing next summer. The key will be -- is Nash willing to agree to an extension as part of a trade? Teams won't give up much if they're renting him for 60 games. To me, the best destination for Nash might be Indiana in a swap for Darren Collison. Suns get a young, talented point guard, Pacers get a player who could get them to the Eastern Conference Finals. If Nash would agree to an extension in Indy, I think the Pacers would have to seriously consider it.

I love the idea if we could do a straight swap and re-sign Nash for an additional 2 years. Opinions?

    Another Pacers question answered:

    Jake (Indiana)

What's the Pacers' ceiling this season?

    Chad Ford (1:26 PM)

Third best record in the East behind Heat and Bulls. I love what Larry Bird and David Morway have done in Indy and they still have a ton of cap flexibility to get stronger if the right deal comes along.

A straight swap of Collison for Nash sounds way too good to be truly possible. I'd consider it for 60 games. For two more years? No brainer.

How old is Nash? Seems like he has been around since the dawn of time.

OK, I just looked it up. He will be 38 next month. With that in mind, I'd have to say no. DC is still quite young and has a lot of time to improve. Nash is at the end of his time.

    My feeling as well

If Nash was 30-34 maybe , but at this point I wouldn't trade DC straight up for him

Plus would Nash really want to come to Indy? Does Sarver want to risk the fan backlash by moving Nash?

Nash wants to win. He has a waaaaaaay better chance to win here than in Phx. I think he would welcome it with arms wide open.

It borders on "and to do this you need me to kick a puppy and punch some children....can I think it over a bit?" caliber of idea if you are adding a year or two.

DC is a nice kid and a great deal out from moving Troy, but Nash's offensive awareness is 100% exactly what the team needs right now. They have guys that could take advantage of it and they have 3 other PGs to help cover the minutes if needed.

Even at the end of Nash's time you could still have a youngish Hill on the team.

Even though I like dc I would do it.... That seems like a great deal plus Danny being better suited for a spot up shooter and the offense being so dead sometimes Nash could bring in a new dynamic to the offense and really open things up!

Also imagine how much leadership would be in the lockeroom and how much having to western all star veterans and a NBA MVP would do for the development of our young players and team as a whole....man that would be nice.

Nash with the Pacers? DC and Nash are equal on defense so we don't lose anything there, I agree that Nash could put us in the conference finals at least.

As many has pointed out Nash is 38 but he really started playing real minutes by age 26, before that he was pretty much a bench player.

DC's D has been vastly improved this year. I'm not sure what game you've been watching. But I do think Nash makes everyone improve far more than DC does.

I am sorry but I 'm not going to conclude my evaluation in DC by watching him play some D in four games, his defense was horrible last year and that is what I am using.

If it was literally just DC for Nash, that's extremely tempting. If this were 2006 it's a no brainer fantasy, but I just fear Nash is close to the end, so you have to decide what your PG situation is going to look like in 12-13 and 13-14, not just now in 11-12. We do have George Hill, so it's not as if we're just SOL once Nash leaves or retires, so maybe it's a risk worth taking for the short term gain. Nash could be tremendous for our offense. Of course, he'll also hurt our defense, but it's a net gain.

Nash is 38 next month. PHX also has a training staff that uses magic.

This is where I'm at. I love Nash, but can he play a couple more years? I'm not sure.

And one from Mike Wilbon's Chat:

    http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/41940

    John (Indy)

Pacers ceiling? and I kep hearing rumors about steve nash for Collison... This can't be real can it?
    mike wilbon (1:41 PM)

Why in the world would the Suns do that? The Pacers, I think, can finish second behind the Bulls in their division..I can see the Pacers being a 5-seed and beating, say, the Knicks in the playoffs...I like what the Pacers have, all of it, the roster, the coaching staff...I love their depth, which most NBA folks will be of great importance this season...

The main difference (and advantage) between DC and Nash is that Nash will pass when he sees an option. His court vision will be the best on the team, and we will see more alley-oops than we have in a while. When the only oop we see in five games is Paul George passing to Dahntay Jones, there's a problem. Nash can make plays happen on the fast break and in the half court.

If we could get him for an additional two years, it's a no-brainer YES. If we can even get him with a risk that he won't extend, but include a draft pick, I personally still say yes. When was the last time PHX was in the Western finals? We could get to the Eastern finals with Nash, and that might entice him to stick around. If not, we have a draft pick we use to look at a new piece, and/or we're in the same position we were before. I don't think DC has the vision we need him to have, to be the team we need.

As much as I would like to do that, I'd hate to move Collison away from this team after he's committed to trying to be a leader, after he finally gets a chance for some coach consistency, and after we surround him with a couple of familiar faces....

But Steve Nash would make this team very good though.

Unless you think Darren Collison is a future all-star, this is a no-brainer move. 2 years of steve nash is worth 10 of what collison is currently giving.

This is all a moot point though, unless Sarver is willing to let his franchise player go and lose ticket sales, which he has been unwilling to do as of yet.
