    Default A Christmas Story

Every year, TBS has a marathon of this, I can't even watch it once. Anyone else this way? Or do you watch it?

I think I have the same problem with this movie as Blazing Saddles... Too many people who think it's one of the funniest things they've ever seen and when I try to watch it just doesn't live up to the hype or expectations they've bestowed upon them.

I have never been able to sit thru either without getting bored and changing channels.... or changing discs....

Wife didn't like it so I only ended up watching about 30 minutes of it. I'll get her to like it eventually!

For some reason, despite my Christmas-sy ways, I never saw this until a couple of years ago. Now I agree it's a Christmas classic. I watch it several times every year. I don't think it's meant to be gut-busting hilarious - it's just the story of a memory of Christmas as seen through one boy's eyes (which is why there are the exaggerated moments.)

For me, it rings true. Growing up, Christmas really was the hub around which my year revolved. I would eagerly awaiting the Sears, Penney's, and Monkey Ward Christmas catalogs in the mail (boy, that dates me) so that I could make my list and embed those gift ideas into my parents' heads. And having grown up in northern Indiana (Kokomo) the scenes in the movie look very familiar (the movie is set in Hammond.)

I generally don't care for narrated movies (don't care for the original Bladerunner, love the Director's cut) but I like it here. Having the original author narrate the movie is rare, and the late Mr. Shepherd does a great job. Of course, he was very familiar with the material, having wrote it originally and having co-scripted the movie. And he had the voice, being a veteran radio guy.

    That's my take.

Love it, watched it countless times, own it. Do not own a leg lamp, but I know somebody that does!

"But, first, let us now praise famous moments, because something happened Tuesday night in Indianapolis that you can watch a lifetimeís worth of professional basketball and never see again. There was a brief, and very decisive, and altogether unprecedented, outburst of genuine officiating, and it was directed at the best player in the world, and that, my dear young person, simply is not done."
