ESPN.com: Sources -- Phoenix Suns waive swingman Mickael Pietrus

The Phoenix Suns have waived veteran swingman Mickael Pietrus, according to sources with knowledge of the Suns' decision.

The move has not yet been formally announced, but sources said Pietrus' name appears on a list of players released Thursday that has been circulated to all 30 teams.

If Pietrus clears waivers 48 hours from the official time of his release, he'll become an unrestricted free agent.

Pietrus was actually traded to the Toronto Raptors earlier this month for a conditional second-round pick, but the Raptors rescinded the trade after Pietrus' troublesome right knee was flagged by the Raptors during his physical.

The trade also called for the Suns to pay $1 million to Toronto and left little doubt that Pietrus -- acquired from Orlando as part of the December deal to acquire center Marcin Gortat and create some salary-cap flexibility for the summer of 2012 -- no longer has a future in Phoenix.

The Suns made the move despite Pietrus possessing a guaranteed salary of $5.3 million salary this season.

The only other veteran player of note on the league-issued list of players released Thursday, sources said, is Miami center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who had already announced his intention to retire after one season with the Heat.

Other players with NBA experience waived Thursday as teams pare down their rosters in advance of Sunday's start to the 2011-12 season include Boston's Michael Sweetney, Cleveland's Manny Harris and the Los Angeles Lakers' Gerald Green/

Go get him Indiana! Please don't leave us with D. Jones as the backup SF!

Don't think he's that good of a shooter. Streaky shooter perhaps.

Will give you he tries on D, but don't think he's any better than DJ there.

Would be nice to pick somebody up who can make such good kabobs. Our whole team could feast on them.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

This guy has always been overrated on the PD, IMO. I don't think he's any better than D. Jones either.

We've got an open roster spot and he could come cheap since he's got the guaranteed $$ from Phoenix. Why not.

Never let this be the sole reason to go after someone! Seriously though, he's ok. Doesn't provide anything that we don't already have.

I have a feeling that many people here have not seen Pietrus play, the guy is a defensive machine that can hit the 3 when needed, we need a guy like that now that Rush is gone.

I do agree with you, I would like to have him for a 1 year 3mil deal. The problem I have is if his knee was not in good enough shape for Raptors, then why would his knee be good enough for us? Doesn't make much sense to pay someone with a bum knee, take a roster spot and possible lose out on a future trade / FA this season.

Unfortunately, that is something could be said about quite a few players in recent years.

However, I wouldn't mind giving him a shot as a backup wing for a decent price if he his health isn't going to be a long-term concern.

pietrus did depend on his athleticism. if he's lost his hops, then he's just another guy.
