Thread: What's Our Deepest Position

    Question What's Our Deepest Position

Around the league everyone seems to think we have a pretty deep team. Also watching espn bucher said that with how the schedule is and I quote "teams like a Indiana pacers or the Memphis can sneak up and really make a lot of noise this year and also make a deep push in the playoffs" i also agree we have a solid team and I would say our weakest position might be center just because at the 3 Danny is a better player than hibbert and both of their backups aren't too much of factors so basically just going by starters on this on so 5 is the weakest. I also can't really decide what's our strongest because the point position and the backup lance did solid at least last night, sg is very solid and pf is just as potent but im going with pf....would like to kno what others think.

    Lets see.

Our point guard is average and our backup point guard is above average
Our shooting guard is average and our backup is average (or above average if you insist GH will play backup SG)
Our small forward is a great player and his backup is probably somewhere between below to average
Our power forward is a good player and his backup is a good player
Our center is a good player and his backup is average

    so... I guess PF deepest

We really can't say PF is the deepest yet because we have no idea how well West or Pendergraph will play coming off their injuries. We have no depth at SF, and while Foster is a good player he only excels at rebounding and defense. The guard positions both are overall deep. As much as people love to hate on Rush and Price they aren't bad players.

Honestly, until we know how West will play with his knee I find it hard to call this team deep anywhere except for at guard. Then again when all of the major teams are stoking up on superstars, and have no bench to speak of our team does look pretty deep.

We have former all stars at the forward positions in Granger and West. Backing them up are two virtual second year players in George and Tyler, since Tyler's first year was almost nonexistent. Third string would be Pendergraph at power forward and Jones or Rush at small forward. On paper it looks like we are equally strong at the forward positions, but it remains to be seen if West will return to his pre-injury form this year. So I would say small forward is our strongest position as of right now with Danny starting and George backing him up.

With our depth we can pretty much absorb any short term injury at every position with not much letdown. For example, West was out so Hansbrough went out and scored 19 points and got 11 rebounds, pretty much what we expect of a healthy West. If Danny was out we would just move Paul George to small forward. If George is moved or injured, we just move Hill into his spot. If Collison is injured we move Hill into his spot. And if Hibbert is out we have Foster starting.

Our weakest position appears to be center though because we don't know if Foster's back will enable him to play every game, and we don't know how much use Pendergraph will be. If we don't sign a backup center I think Famous will be retained.

Not to mention no one at C other than Hibbert requires other teams to really pay attention. Yeah, he is a good back-up, but he is no replacement especially at this point in his career. Honestly if Hibbert goes down I would rather see Tyler start at C.

Deepest and strongest are two very different things.

PF is strongest because we have 2 starter-quality players.

SG is deepest because we have 5 on the roster.

I voted for PG, because we 3 guys capable of playing PG at the NBA level and Lance can play some PG too.

I say SF. Danny is an all star and who's our other SF on the team? P.George!!! Just because he is playing out of position at SG.... He's still a SF. He says he feels he's a SF.

I say PF has got to be our deepest position. If you are talking about the best position itd probably be SF with DG/PG. But with The talent that we have, and the fact we have about 3 ppl that could back up the PF, its gotta be our deepest spot

How deep are we if our bench got smoked by Chicago's in game 1?

SG got weaker and PF got stronger with the Lou trade.

I'd say that Lou will be pretty useless for this team unless he can play C. Hansbrough and likely Pendergraph will play in front of him.

Lou should play over Pendergraph - and yes he can play center, he plays bigger than his size like Chuck Hayes.

I voted for improvement. While I think our best position is the power forward position, we still need to deepen our roster.

Less help at center for Roy. Center is weaker regardless of how much Roy has improved.

Power Forward is made up of one player who is a rising force in Hansbrough, and a player who is a finesse player defensively and a pick and pop player offensively who is recovering from major knee surgery and a player who few have heard of who also has ongoing knee issues. Power forward is actually weaker.

At shooting guard is an up and coming star in Paul George, a player who played like a more expensive version of Brandon Rush when he was in SA with a little less defense in George Hill, no replacement for the team's best passer and team defender (he sure played differently in MIL his first game there), and Dahntay Jones who is a net negative virtually every time he is on the floor. At best, the position is equal to last year if Paul George has improved as much as we hope he has.

At point guard, the position is stronger because George Hill is not prone to be ball dominant, and when he plays the position he will not clog the offense, unless of course the point guard is actually supposed to be ball dominant in whatever changes are implemented this year.

At small forward, at least Paul George can back Danny up at times, making the strongest combination at any position the Pacers have in my view.

The loss of McRoberts, Dunleavy, and now Rush has hurt the Pacers overall offensive and defensive effectiveness, and it will take some time to make up that difference. I think that it will be made up for by the end of the season, but it will be some time coming.

Granger is our best player, Paul George is the player with the most raw talent and potential on the team. So, SF is easily our best position.
