Default West wont play against chicago friday night..

Indiana Pacers fans will likely have to wait until next week to see newly acquired power forward David West make his debut. Pacers coach Frank Vogel said today that West likely won’t play against the Chicago Bulls at Conseco Fieldhouse on Friday. “It’s only because the game will just be days after he signed with our team,” Vogel said. “He’s still learning the system and he’s got to improve his conditioning because he was holding himself back some since he was a free agent.”

i dont understand this at all... thats what training camp is for.

Well, looks like I probably won't be getting tickets until he's going to play.

But if you have a player running around, unsure about what he's doing, you're not benefitting those who are familiar with the system. Once West gets the plays and system down better, and back into better shape, he will be playing. Until then, he does us no good running around aimlessly trying to figure out his place....

It's probably more from a conditioning standpoint, and wanting to see what some of the other PFs can do.

i meant that when teams trade for quality players they play immediately... and here indiana is not playing him due to he dont know the system.... lol... the interview i seen of him he sure dont look out of shape..... i know the game does not count, but, he could at least play several minutes it would seem..... he has been here what? 5 days? and dont know a single play.. i played basketball and im sure 5 good days of practice would get him to be able to play at least 10 minutes friday...

    Exactly!

The dumbest thing we could do is rush him back, and have his knee flair up and he misses significant time

I dont understand though why he couldn't play 8-10 m inutes though

That's quite alright. It's only a preseason game.
In 49 states it's just basketball, but this is Indiana!

True, but he has only been cleared to come back from his ACL for a month and a half. Being on the free agent market, he's not going to overwork himself to possibly aggravate his injurie again. Now that he has a contract is when he will begin to really focus on training and getting back into playing shape. Being in shape and "playing shape" differ. The guy was out for a long time with his ACL.

Look at it like this...Do you think the Colts will throw Peyton Manning in at quarterback as soon as he is cleared from his surgery?

His workouts have probably mostly been concerned with rehab up until he was released in Oct. Then he could begin running and testing out his newly healed body....He is obviously going to need to work to get back into playing shape after sitting for 8 months or so.....No point in putting him out there too early....

He haven't practice in eight months until yesterday, he needs to get in basketball shape and most important see how the knee feels.

And he hasn't played since March. If he's not ready, why rush him for a preseason game? Surely he'll play once the season's actually started.

I like that hes not playing... Yes, im excited to see him out there and see what he can do for us.

But this is only a preseason game and its against a rival. Why not save some of your cookies for the next time you play them?.. when it matters.

Im sure West wants to play , but the decision will always be made by the medical and coaching staff, regardless of West's opinion

The doctor has cleared him 100 percent, and cleared him to push [the knee] as hard as he can right now,” said West’s agent, Lance Young. “David can be ready for the start of training camp.”

cleared to play in october 21st.... they said he was way ahead of schedule... seems to me he would be in better shape 2 months later. but, i will let it pass ....

I understand, but I guess I don't see what harm there would be in letting him go for 5 minutes or so. Just so the fans could see him in the jersey and such. Hopefully he at least dresses.

He needs to get in "basketball shape" after his injury and rehab.

Training camp? Just how long of a training camp do you think he has had?

    I understand my friend, but

Cleared to play by the team physician is different than the medical staff determining it is in his best intrest to not play

I know were talking semantics here but I think the main concern is delayed onset muscle soreness, meaning West could play 20 minutes, experience no initial pain , then the next day his knee looks like a softball

he has had two months to get in shape friend.. doctor clears him oct to push his knee hard.. im sure west didnt get in shape in the lockout...... but two months working out on his own would have helped greatly...

    DAVIDLOCKHEART40:

Youre massively overreacting. Its a preseason game. Chill.

Its likely just to give him a few days to get used to playing again. This really is not a big deal at all

Does anybody here remember how long it took Dunleavy to get in basketball shape after his surgery? Just asking.
