Source: Celtics close to deal with All-Star big man West

    Posted Dec 9 2011 10:35PM

A source briefed on discussions Friday evening said that the Boston Celtics are close to a deal with free agent power forward David West, who has been with the New Orleans Hornets since being drafted in 2003.

West, 31, was expected to be one of the top free agents in this year's class, but he is coming off of a torn ACL suffered late last season in a game against Utah. West has diligently rehabbed his injury in North Carolina last summer, but teams have been slow to make significant offers to him.

A two-time All-Star, West has averaged 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds in his eight NBA seasons. If healthy, West would be a boon whether starting or coming off the bench for the Celtics, who acquired Brandon Bass earlier Friday from Orlando for forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis.

Longtime NBA reporter and columnist David Aldridge is an analyst for TNT. You can e-mail him here and follow him on twitter.

Anyway this makes Chris Paul more likely to sign an extension in Boston, and a trade to Boston more likely?

I don't really think so, but curious what others think.

Larry knows that something is going to fall into our laps. Free agency is not the only way to improve this roster. Besides we just made a deal for George Hill on draft night. I am frustrated too, but people are expecting too much too soon.

The Celtics if they get West will have added PF'S Brandon Bass, Chris Wilcox , and David West and re-signed Jeff Green today

It's painful, but I like the approach.

    The right player.

    The right time.

We will buy players from financially strapped teams.

I am glad that we are not overspending on FAs this yr, but the comp in the east is getting tougher. I agree this looks like a way to attract CP3 to boston, but how can Stern let him go to Boston and not LA?

Hopefully if Boston gets CP3, we can land Rondo and Milsap somehow, cuz we need both of them.

    Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA
As @Daldridgetnt reports, David West close w/ Celtics. Y! Sources say sides working on a sign-and-trade for a 3-year, $27-29M deal.

I think as long as the league doesn't believe the trade has a negative impact on the Hornets value then it will let the deal go through.

I guess they are overpaying him. I am trying to figure out who they are trading..? Could be another team is involved?

$27 mil for 3 years for the Celtics means it would have cost $10 mil/year or more for us, which means the Celtics did us a favor.

Oh, how I hope that is correct. I certainly hope that it doesn't mean the worst of all possible things.... that free agents do not want to come to Indy.

    That would suck.

That surely would be nixed for basketball reasons.
