Dwight Howard to ask Orlando Magic for trade to New Jersey Nets, sources say - ESPN New York

Dwight Howard is preparing to ask the Orlando Magic to trade him to the New Jersey Nets, according to sources close to the situation.

Howard's representatives have told the Nets that they are his preferred destination.

Howard has yet to tell the Magic he will not re-sign with them after this season, but the sources said he will within the next few days, perhaps as early as Friday. There is also a chance that Howard will not attend the opening of training camp Friday, according to a source.

As ESPN.com reported last week, the Nets are ready to offer the Magic a package built around center Brook Lopez and two first-round draft picks, New Jersey's own and one the Nets acquired from Houston in a previous trade, according to sources.

New Jersey is also willing to take back Hedo Turkoglu and the three years, $34 million remaining on his deal.

The appeal of the Nets for Howard is the chance to play with All-Star point guard Deron Williams and the Nets' move into a new arena in Brooklyn for the start of the 2012-13 season.

Williams and Howard spoke several times about teaming up during the lockout.

If Howard is indeed committed to joining the Nets, he can all but force the Magic to make the trade by declaring his intentions not to sign a long-term contract with any other team, thereby assuring that those clubs make low-ball offers to Orlando.

In light of the league's refusal to allow Chris Paul to dictate a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, one has to wonder if it will sit idly by and let Howard facilitate a move to the Nets.

Howard's decision to go to the Nets would put a monkey wrench in the Los Angeles Lakers' plan to team Howard with Kobe Bryant by trading Andrew Bynum for the Magic center.

The Nets are continuing to pursue free-agent center Nene in case their plan to acquire Howard falls through.
The good news for us in all of this is, as highlighted in the article, if the Nets do acquire Dwight, they'll be eliminated from the Nene sweepstakes.

This will happen if for no other reason than to keep Howard away from the Lakers.

That's a ridiculous reason for approving/rejecting moves though.

Everyone hates the Lakers, so it's ok to tilt the rules against them?

What if next time, it's Blake Griffin trying to force his way to OKC? Is the league going to ban it somehow?

If you want rules against superteams, you can make these rules, like in the CBA you know? An easy way would be to increase max salaries, or remove the limit altogether. That would have the double benefit of stopping superteams and reducing available money for the (often overpaid) middle class.

Have you read Dan Gilbert's letter? A lot of NBA owners resent the Lakers.

Hopefully the NBA will only pass judgement on Hornets trades.

It did make it harder. Its clear that they want their max bird rights contracts. Now they need their teams permission. It's not clear what they'll do if they can't get them though. Maybe we'll get to see with the Hornets. Someone is going to have to find out.

The Shaq free agency where Jerry West tampered and then Gasol/ Kwame Brown trade plus Kobe's demand I'll go to Duke if any team but the Lakers get my rights demand has to stick in the craw of every other NBA owner.

In the end the Gasol/ Brown deal wasn't that bad it netted the Grizzlies Marc Gasol.

As long as both team's owners approved of the deal, I don't see why the league would ban it. In the Paul deal, one team's owners, the Hornets, disapproved of the deal, so it was vetoed.

Are there any examples of non-NBA-owned teams having deals vetoed by the league for dubious reasons?

I don't really think the nets would qualify as a super team though. If they trade lopez for dwight and amnesty outlaw they will only have ~9M cap space next year I believe.

The only league veto I can remember is when they blocked a trade that included a retired player to match salary.

I tried telling you before. The lockout was never, I repeat, NEVER about this whole fantasy of competitive balance or parity or anything of the like.

It was about the money. The NBA is a cold business, and the lockout was only about cold hard cash.

Lopez and two first round picks? You take that and run if you know the guy is leaving. I can't believe how impatient the Nets are.

NBA superstars need to be put on notice they are about to destroy the league. If you wan't to make a superteam, join the Harlem Globetrotters.

Lakers fans should be coming un-glued. Their future is slowly withering away. Too bad the CBA is a done deal.

You got your wish Jerry Buss. Have fun realizing that L.A. is not the only large market in the United States.

Lopez and two picks for Howard? That trade is garbage.

The Jazz received a similar deal. The exception being, they received Derrick Favors and Devon Harris. If the Magic could receive a third pick or a second player in the deal they should do it. After all, Dwight Howard is leaving. Why wait for it to happen?

On the other hand, if I was a member of the Magic executive team, I'd tell Dwight Howard that he may become a free agent. The Magic will offer him a five year maximum contract, if he declines our offer he may receive a shorter and small contract from another team.

The question is: do you cut your loses or bet against the house?

The most frustrating aspect of this scenario is that another superstar has demanded another trade. When will it end? Someone has to force the star into receiving shorter and smaller contracts as a reminder that loyalty has it's rewards in this CBA.

I think Orlando should try to hold on to Dwight. All his favored destinations (Lakers, Knicks, maybe the Nets too if they get Nene/other FA) would be over the cap, so that gives Orlando a little leverage in sign and trade. Plus they'll keep Bird rights, which gives them a small financial advantage.

I would think this Nets deal would still be available next year for a Dwight S&T, if worse comes to worst.

I agree. I am fine with this deal. I was fine with Lebron going to the Heat. But then I found it odd that Bosh did too. And really odd that all the moves the Heat made prior to last offseason seemed to point to it. How did they coordinate it without tampering with signed players?

The NBA does not care about the small market. Ironically it will always be a small league in comparison to the NFL and MLB.

You pimped this player-centered league Stern. The casual fan finds your players undesirable and repulsively selfish.

The word is, the Nets are pursuing Nene if the Dwight Howard deal collapses. Could this man Nene is waiting?

Hilarious, I though Nene was all about being wanted. As the famous line on SI.com comments sections go. "Come to Indiana Bro."

As for Howard...."Go to LA Bro"

Get his *** out of the Eastern Conference. Same with Chris Paul.

It was bad news for Orlando that the Paul trade was vetoed. I liked a Bynum + TPE for Turk + picks trade a lot more than that Lopez + cap room for Turk + picks trade. I wonder if they can still pull a similar trade with the Lakers. Probably not.

I'd hold on him for the time being too.

If the Nets get Howard, I'll view it as a team passing us in the East.

They don't have much beyond Dwill, but even if they do pass us, the magic would drop.
