The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

  • Five questions to start the season....

    1. Can Roy Hibbert play this season without having episodes of depression or self doubt? He has had Satan exercised from his life and we all know that Frank is one step below Tony Robins as a motivational speaker. So in other words we will find out how much of what has transpired in the past has been because Roy was mentally beaten down or Roy was mentally weak.

    2. How good is Paul George? There is a lot riding on our tall athletic shooting guard and expectations run from just being a good contributor to being an all-star (maybe not this season but I know some of us think it will come). This question has a lot of sub questions built into it as well. Will he become part of the offense on a nightly basis, will he be able keep up the defensive intensity that he showed in the playoffs, has he developed a mid range game?

    3. What do we need at the four spot? Not so much of who but what. Do we want an athletic four who is like a pogo stick with some offensive game? Do we want a brute that will just clog the lane on defense and maybe help out when they can on offense? Do we want a power forward that spreads the floor? Are you more interested in the player being a better defender or offensive player? Can Tyler ft the bill for any of these and if not who for you is the answer?

    4. Darren Collison or George Hill? Honestly didn’t think we’d have to make this decision this early on but Mike Wells seems to think that Hill will eventually be the starter. Who do you want? What skills do either bring to the position, what skills do either lack?

    5. Frank Vogel, saint or angel? Ok, just kidding (well sort of) but let’s be honest there are questions to answer here as well. Can he handle the minute distribution from what appears to be somewhat of a glut in the backcourt? George, Hill, Collison, Jones, Price & let’s not forget Larry Birds favorite player Lance. Will he be able to hold these guys together as the year goes on? Last year I’m certain they were all just thrilled to be unshackled from the evil clutches of Satan and almost anyone could have had a positive impact. But now the newness is off and the stench of the previous failure is starting to waft away can he hold them together once they hit their first losing streak.

There are a lot more questions going into the season but these are the five I want to start with. Let me hear your answers.

    1. Great question regarding Roy. I've got a thread going on the subject and tend to be suspicious of his mental game. But you make a great point that this is his first full year under a positive coach. Would love to see Roy step up to the next level during crunch time.

    2. I think people underestimate how big a step it is from talented and good contributor to leading scorer, shoulder-the-load, I'm the alpha dog, all-star. Granger pulled it off. But it's so much easier to perform when the expectations are low. When you are required to put up numbers day in and day out, that takes real focus and perseverance and, well, cohunas. Like Hibbert, Paul George's key issues are between his ears. But there is much more early evidence that PG could pull it off.

    3. I will go with the "X-man" that I think TBird has been pimping for quite some time. And I see this player as more defensive than offensive. That way, if either Hibbs or Hans are getting by on the defensive end, we are good. If not, the Xman can come in for the one getting burnt the worst. If we don't find the perfect guy, I would not be upset to resign McRoberts. He's not a defensive superstar, but there's something about him I really, really like. He adds some sizzle and he's smart.

    4. I think Collison will be gone in a couple of weeks. It took me just a couple of weeks to dislike his shoot first, terrible defense performances. I think he's a liability and George Hill would be much preferred, although picking up another stellar point guard would also be nice.

    5. Didn't Vogel have a mini-losing streak already? He handled it pretty well. I am pretty excited to see how he performs this year. Bringing in top talent around him speaks to his being secure as his own person. Go Pacers.

Great to see you posting basketball questions again Peck, and great questions to start with. I'll take a stab at 3 and 4.

No doubt the question du jour. What do we really need in a PF?

Looking at the team as a whole, it's pretty obvious that we lacked scoring last season. We had Danny of course, but no one really stood out as a second option, with Hibbert and Collison both being so inconsistent. And Danny is arguably better suited as a second option himself. So that's the attraction of a David West, who should provide at least Danny-level offense.

On the other hand, looking at our current bigs (Hibbert and Hans), it's obvious that their best skills are in scoring, it's just that they aren't very good at it (yet). Overall, our frontcourt is lacking in strength, athleticism, and mobility, which translates to poor rebounding and interior defense. So there's a need for some athletic big guys as well.

Of the two needs, IMO the second is more important for big guys. My thinking is that you could find scoring from different positions, but defense and rebounding should be the primary duty of bigs. Of course, ideally we want to find a PF who has all these things in the same package, but a guy like that is a superstar and I'm not sure there's anyone beyond prime TD and prime KG who fits that description anyway.

Yet a third way is to ditch one or both of our current guys and build a new frontcourt. It might come to that at some point but I'd rather we stick with Hibbert and Hans a bit longer to see what we have in them.

So I guess I'd like the Pacers to get a PF who's primarily a defender, who's quick and athletic enough to play with Hibbert, and strong enough to play with Hans. Anything else he can do (interior scoring, perimeter scoring, shotblocking, etc) is a bonus.

      How about neither?

I think George Hill was brought in to help our scoring and defense. He's not really a point guard, and unless we get a very good playmaking SG (Paul G or Lance develops?), I wouldn't want Hill to play PG full time. For what's it worth, I do think highly of Hill and think that he'll see a big jump in his scoring stats.

Collison is... average, I would say. Not an indictment of him btw, seeing that we had far worse point guards in recent years. But I certainly think that PG is a position we need to upgrade eventually.

Nothing wrong with the Pacer's that Dale Davis couldn't fix.

Seriously, it's been so long since I even WANTED to talk bball that I'm gonna have to think about these for a bit. I will say, the evidence leads me to believe that DC is not seen as an answer by TPTB.

I have been listening to the summer Mark Monteith one-on-one show podcasts (I was too depressed to listen to them during the lockout) and found it very interesting to hear Roy's comments about how Coach Thompson (père) used to spend huge amounts of time tearing him down while Coach Thompson (fils) would give him the ups and props. All other issues notwithstanding, that sounds VERY similar to the probable actions of The Coach Who Shall Not Be Named and Coach Vogel. I suspect the DIFFERENCE is that TCWSNBN didn't have a body of championships to lend his criticism credibility AND that too much was done in public.

This tells me that Roy DOES respond to the RIGHT balance of negativity and positivity. I would even venture to say that, based on how he described getting motivated for a lot of the things he has done, there will HAVE to be someone giving him crap for what he does wrong in order for him to be focused on it. It just has to be done the right way. If we see Roy get a little lazy about correcting problems or working hard in practice this year, it would be a sign of not enough pushing from outside.

That being said, Roy is putting on muscle for an additional 25-30 lbs, which I think will help him maintain his positions better and won't be too much a strain on his body. It will be very good to see how he moves and if he can get more aggressive.

Second year is a big year. Expecting that at least two of our wings will be gone, there will be more playing time for him to prove himself. I expect him to play behind George Hill (not necessarily start over him, though that seems to be the board expectation) unless Hill plays more PG than SG.

I think we need an offensive rebounder with credible scoring who can help keep a front court double-team from pouncing on Roy. Spacing the floor will be very important in terms of forcing a man to be left open if a double team or attempted passing lane cutoff is going to happen.

Since I don't watch much non-Pacers, I have no idea what FA would give us that. I think an aggressive Tyler gives it to us, but at the risk of being forced out of position as easily as Roy is.

I don't know Hill's game that well because I don't watch much non-Pacers, but from what I've heard credibly on PD I think it may make sense to hold Hill to be used as combo guard. I'm not completely comfortable with DC long term at the 1, but I can certainly see DC starting at 1 and GH at 2, with GH sliding over to 1 when DC goes to the bench and PG comes in at 2. There's minutes at 1 needed from someone in order to give GH a rest - ideally you might bring DC back in and sit GH.

At this point I'd go with "saint". Angels aren't made of the same stuff as humans, and when they leave we forget they were here (Dudley said so in The Bishop's Wife, so it MUST be true).

My big questions is going to be what happens if/when he tries to move some of the players in a way they are capable but just don't want to go. Will he be able to handle adverse reactions to his coaching decisions and get some of the strong-willed know-it-all players we may be getting from Free Agency to do his bidding?

Re: Five questions to start the season....

              5 more I have:

-Is P.George future as a SG or a SF?
If he is more suited for the 3, what/when is our next move? Granger would be a nice piece in any trade, but you only move him to improve at another position (esp SG, PG). I do not want toi move Danny, but I do not want to limit Paul's growth by playing him out of position.

-Will Lance find a position in our rotation?
Will he be able to transfer the practice court to game day? Is he a "wildcard" or a "wildchild"? Lance could be a 2nd unit killer, or a lockerroom cancer - we need to know & react ASAP. He could be huge for this team by improving his court play &/or his trade value by showing he is "Now Ready".

-How long a leash does Frank have w/ B.Shaw on the bench?
I really like Frank & think a guy like B.Shaw could be a HUGE influence to his development, but if we struggle, how long does Larry stay with him. Don't want to be a wet blanket, but we all know this has potentiel.

-Is this Larry's "swan song", & if so, who steps into his spot?
We have brought some new faces to our coaching & executive staffs of late, and with the inpending departure of Larry, what is his (& Herb's) succession plan for the front office? Is it a given it's Morway? Im not so sure.

-How will this City embrace this team?
The Colts suck for the first time in over a decade, and there is an opening to capture the intrest of a city looking for a reason to fall back in love with their first love - Basketball. Potential name recognizable FA's, young exciting roster full of new faces and good citizens, but will it connect with the public? Will attendence noticably improve? How long, if at all, will it take to start filling seats & securing the furure of this team in this city.

To answer number 3 I think we need both and we should look to get both in the future. Tyler needs to be coached to defend better but I could see him playing better team defense in the near future.

I don't think this team is designed to shut down interior scoring with one guy and I don't think it will be much of a problem in the East except for NY and where ever Howard ends up (hopefully in the West).

To add to this the best defense will be played on the perimeter with Paul George and GHill. I think its fools gold to try to stop dribble pentration by having a Big scary pf in the paint. The NBA has changed and a guy like that will be quickly in foul trouble in the East given ROse, Wade, Melo, LeBron.

I am not saying we shouldn't have a bruiser but that simply that we shouldn't pay big money for one or choose that over offense at the pf position.

Lastly you have to take whats available. There aren't too many bruisers in FA's but there is some scoring pf's in the mix.

I liked your focus on PF and PG. And I believe that watching what is done regarding PF will determine exactly how TPTB will progress with this team in the future.

Are we going to become a more defensive-minded team, or we going to become a team that seeks its wins by outscoring its opponents?

I don't believe Hibbert will ever become much more than an average or slightly above average defensive presence in the paint. But I do think that he can eventually get his 9 rebounds a game and provide more than ample scoring. I believe that, like Smits, he will take up a lot of interior room, but that he will not necessarily be a defender that the opponent cannot beat.

That would indicate that a good balanced front court will require a very good defender to pair with him. That's why some would like to slot Nene as a PF or perhaps pursue Josh Smith. But we do have Hansbrough, who I think will prove to be a good scorer with a mid-range game, who can also rebound and is an aggressive defender, even if not a very good one.

So, if the Pacers do not acquire a better defender for the front court, and especially if they acquire a better scorer that is not an above average defender for the front court, I see them going a different direction in their back court.

A weakness of the Pacers over the past several years has been that we cannot stop the opponent from penetrating the lane. Our PG has been a poor defender. This appears to continue with Collison. Unfortunately, if our front court does not change, it is imperative that we have a better defending back court. And that is why we will see Hill take over at PG or that we will acquire a new PG, especially if we don't improve the defensive abilities of the front court.

Pairing George at SG with a better defender at PG and a better focused Granger at SF will provide a very good defensive perimeter.

It's all about balance. And if the Pacers are going to become a better defending team, if they are not going to improve both front court and back court defensively, it is imperative that they at least improve one of the two.

A team that relies on merely outscoring its opponents can do quite well in the regular season but is more likely than not to be a failure in the playoffs.

I think having a full season with Frank Vogel as coach will do wonders for Roy's confidence and mental stability. Also, being the undisputed starting center for the team should do the same thing. With the work that Roy's been putting in this extended offseason, I think he's going to come back positively this season and really prove his worth and value. I doubt we're eager to get him gone from the team; we just need a veteran center who can help inspire/motivate him to play at a higher level, and who can obviously help cover for him when he's not at the top of his game, so to speak.

This question has a lot of sub questions built into it as well. Will he become part of the offense on a nightly basis, will he be able keep up the defensive intensity that he showed in the playoffs, has he developed a mid range game?
I don't think Paul's ready to be the scoring replacement for Granger, as has been speculated before (and during) the Playoffs. However, just like Hibbert, I think the work he's put in this summer will pay off positively. I think, when the time comes, he'll be what we need, but he's yet to prove to even be the second scorer aside Granger. As long as his defense isn't a Playoff-only occurrence, I think we've still got a very great player to continue to build around. He can only get better, so we should just give him the chances to do so.

I think the choice for power forward should be pushed in the athletic, yet veteran direction. I wouldn't mind having Josh Smith in this position; he's an explosive, defensive, rebounding beast. Simply because he's aware his time is up in Atlanta, I think we should try to move him to Indy. His athleticism is off the charts, and he can assist in leading the team from the front court. Despite the crap I serve Hansbrough daily, I think he's got the potential to increase his production and be a player we'll value much more, much later. But we need someone now who can produce, and Josh Smith might be that smashmouth player we need, as long as his attitude or personality doesn't get in the way of anything.

DC is a great player, and still has a lot of potential for a third-year player, but with George Hill's proven production, I expect to see him starting sooner rather than later. As far as "wanting" one player or another, I would like to see how Hill performs with our team before placing him in the starting lineup. Regardless, DC will continue to be a good player whether he's starting or coming off the bench (where he did most of his damage for NOH prior to CP3's injury). I'm also interested in seeing what (positive) damage Lance can do on the court; if his potential (and nickname) can live up to the legend, and if he ends up being a much more sufficient leader for the Goon Squad than any of our other guards.

Last year I’m certain they were all just thrilled to be unshackled from the evil clutches of Satan and almost anyone could have had a positive impact. I would look to see George playing the backup 3 more often this season. I also think Jones, Price, and/or Rush are on their ways out; we can't be too sure of what Vogel will do to the lineup prior to having a completed/finalized roster. As long as everyone is willing to play team basketball, and put Indiana back on the basketball map (our state's birthright), I think Frank will be more than capable of keeping this team together and solid. I've been more excited for a "full" season with Frank Vogel coaching, but I think 66 games (and playoffs) will have to do this year around.

I have a question of my own:

What relatively logical/conceivable player would be worth trading Granger, given that this player could make the team around him better as a whole, and individuals as well? In contrast, what player could we (again, logically/conceivably) bring in otherwise, through trades or FA (to play alongside Granger), who could single-handedly improve the team? In other words, who would be the perfect single player to add to the team, who could bump us a couple spots in the East?

To answer my own question, I thought Rondo would be good for that. I would also give Jamal Crawford some credit in that sense (taking over clutch shots, scoring responsibilities, great passing and court vision, etc.). But I can't figure out one single player who we could ACTUALLY add, who would be able to boost production so well. I don't even think EJ (the Prodigal Hoosier) would be able to provide the court vision Crawford or Rondo could, nor could Rondo provide scoring that EJ could. It's a very subjective question.

Re: Five questions to start the season....

                      1. This is the crucial question which determines whether we match a teams offer this offseason. Unfortunately this is the season to get a future Center and not next season. Gasol, Jordan, and Nene will notbe on the market if we find out if Hibbert is mentally weak.

                      2. What we don't want is for PG to have the sophomore year that Rush had. Consistency is more crucial than overall production. If PG has a great defensive year with improvements in his attacking the basket and getting to the foul line. His midrange won't come this year like you want. That will be next year.

                      3. Unless we sign a vet for 1 to 2 years I do not want to get a West like player. I would rather just get Hayes or bring back McBob and stand pat. If Roy takes it to the next step and Tyler is more consistent from 15 feet, then the need is not as great. Danny and PG are great rebounders, so the need for two front court rebounders is not as high. The negative is lack of an open court offense. Meaning DC is out running with no one else trailing.

                      4. This is the season for DC. If he improves then he is not traded. But the minute you have a similar product than last year, you ship him out. Hill will give us a leadership in the backcourt that DC does not and will never have. AJ should be cut and Lance should be able to sink or swim at the Point. We have to know what we got early in the season. Finding a 3rd PG is not that hard in this PG saturated league. I can see us getting a Watson vet to fill out the 85% if we do not get a big splash.

                      5. The question with Vogel is can he bring this team together as a unit through an entire season. Can he get us to play consistent ball? Will his boisterous style begin to be a clanging symbol during a bad streak? I think this year he will get a pass if we are 8th seed again with new players. But I fear the leash is shorter than it was with JOB. Which ticks many of you off.

As I said in my last post, I think Paul is fit to be a small forward, as his size, athleticism, and play style is that of a small forward. As far as Granger goes, he's still our star, best player, and leading scorer. I know I'm contradicting previous statements I've made about George, but until he's at that level, or we have a viable replacement for him, we really can't afford to lose Granger. At this point, George is good starting at the 2, and first off the bench for Granger at the 3. Until he starts showing some Blake Griffin-, Tyreke Evans-, or James Harden-esque sophomore production, he should wait until his card is drawn to lead this team in Granger's place.

However, if we had to, I would trade Granger for EJ or an equal SG, putting Paul as the default starting SF.

Lance could be a 2nd unit killer, or a lockerroom cancer - we need to know & react ASAP. He could be huge for this team by improving his court play &/or his trade value by showing he is "Now Ready".
With the amount of work Bird has put in to make Lance a properly-functioning team member, I would imagine he makes his way onto the court more than just a couple minutes per game this year. Pending roster movement and proof of performance, I think humility will lead Lance to being what we need him to be. I would just rather find out as soon as possible instead of waiting to see him wreak havoc. However, I'll put my faith in Bird, and that he can make Lance take a step back and look at the team as a bigger picture, instead of just a vessel for which Lance can show out, perform, and entertain.

I really like Frank & think a guy like B.Shaw could be a HUGE influence to his development, but if we struggle, how long does Larry stay with him. Don't want to be a wet blanket, but we all know this has potentiel.
I think Frank Vogel is the key puzzle piece in keeping this team together. He's the young, underdog, formerly-interim head coach who helped lead his ragtag team of fellow underdog misfits to their first Playoff birth in years, and all through positive enforcement. I'm not up to par with Shaw's coaching style, but I think he will provide whatever Frank needs to discipline, and show authority. I can't explain how often I love seeing cutaways to Frank sitting on the bench every time I play 2K12 as the Pacers; he's a dormant beast behind a friendly smile, and that's exactly what we need.

I say Bird's on his way out, to be replaced by Morway, and Pritchard to step up to Morway's spot. Not that this scenario is what I desire, but this is what I expect; since it's all just stalling until I strike it rich and buy the Pacers from Herb anyway.

Unfortunately, I'll be spending most of this season still in Orlando, so I won't be able to see how the city reacts to the return of their Pacers. However, with the fallback of the Colts (a Christmas gift from God, imo), Indy is going to look to the Pacers to bring back our pride. We're Indiana, the Pacers' REAL Sixth Man. There's no way this team will flourish without the entire state's support, in comparison to how well they can do with every seat filled in Conseco. Whether it's making strides to get EJ for the namesake, or bringing in players the on-the-fence fans may not even recognize, all the Pacers have to do is show that they're ready to perform and produce, and the city will follow along. Maybe the Pacers need a new Director of New Age Media and Interpersonal Digital Marketing (moi). It's all about getting people to realize how important this season is to our team, to our city, and to the league. Coming off the most important and exciting season in ages, now that the anticipation is over, it's time to top last year by shocking and surprising the opposing teams, their fans, and our own, 66 times this year, and then some.

There are a lot more questions going into the season but these are the five I want to start with. Let me hear your answers.
                          1. I think Roy will be fine. I think that people blow the sports psychologist thing way out of proportion. I think that if he's stronger, and can hold his position better that he'll have more confidence and that it will spread to the rest of his game, as well as his personal and team life. I expect him to break out this season. He has all the tools, and has the work ethic and will to do it, plus apparently he's put on a ton of muscle, so we'll see.

                          2. Very good. I could see paul averaging low teens in scoring, and we know he's a very good defender. I think there will be some growing pains, but if he's worked on his 3 pt. range he could be one of the better sophomores, and I have extreme confidence in him in the long term. Paul George's mid range game was already very good last year, he shot an awesome % on 2 pt. shots, it's 3 pointers that need work.

                          3. I want us to pick up west if he's affordable. He has some toughness, and an amazing mid ranged jumper that will allow roy to have some space to work inside. I don't think we need a brute. Murphy was an extreme in the other direction, but i want a guy that can step out to mid range while still being at least adequate on the glass. Roy is becoming a decent defensive anchor, he isn't Rik, that needs dale neccesarily. If west was fully healthy he'd be ideal, hopefully he's fully back. Hans can do some of that stuff, but he chucks too often, and gets lost on defense, he may get there, but right now i'd rather he be the ultimate energy, active, and prolific scoring 6th man that the fans love.

                          4. I see Collison starting most games, unless we're facing a westbrook or rose or wall, in which case hill may see some starts or at least play more minutes than usual. Hill is a better defender, but I think collison can become at least adequate, and as much as people like to rag on collison's passing he's far better at it than Hill, who even starting at PG for san antonio averaged abysmal assist numbers. Hill will be awesome backing up 2 positions, but I could see him winning out.

                          5. I think he'll be fine. Lance is the one guy that I could see missing out on PT, like last year, and he might take some heat from larry, but I think that he's open enough, frank enough , and honest enough that players will be able to respect the decisions he makes as long as they are producing wins. Wins cure most ills, and for at least this season I think the guys will be thrilled to just be winning over .500 of their games. In the future as expectations get higher we'll see what happens, but I don't forsee conflict in that regard this year.
Goodbye Captain, My Captain. I wish you had the chance to sink or swim with your ship on its quest for the "ship".

                            1. Paul George is either. If he is quick enough and athletic enough to guard chris paul and derrick rose than he is certainly quick and athletic enough to guard any 2 in the league. The positions are identical for all intents and purposes on offense, so he's fine at the two, in fact I like him at the two more. Some larger SF's may be able to push hi maround until he gains some strength.

                            2. It's pending. Larry will push frank to at least give him a chance, and then it's up to him. Personally I don't factor him into my expectations of the team.

                            3. Vogel is the head coach. I don't think he'll have problems. Shaw is a coup, but it doesn't indicate that vogel has a short leash, especially given how much he is loved by the fans and players.

                            4. If Larry is truly leaving I could see it being Pritchard or Morway. Possibly morway becoming president and Pritchard GMing.

                            5. Indy is pretty fairweather with professional sports. Butler isn't any good this year, the colts blow... If the pacers are good than we have a very golden chance to win back more fans at once than we would in a normal year. I could see Roy and Vogel becoming really popular around the community if their great personalities are accompanied by winning basketball games.
Goodbye Captain, My Captain. I wish you had the chance to sink or swim with your ship on its quest for the "ship".

If he is more suited for the 3, what/when is our next move? Granger would be a nice piece in any trade, but you only move him to improve at another position (esp SG, PG). I do not want toi move Danny, but I do not want to limit Paul's growth by playing him out of position.

A little from colum A & a little from colum B. Was Jordan or Pippen the shooting guard or small forward (not that either of these guys come close in talent but you know what I mean). I'd hate to punt Granger down the road when there is zero reason in my mind that they can work so well together.

It's really all up to Lance in a way. Talent wise he has a top end as high as anyone on our team and frankly is probably better than over half of them. But at the same time until he understands that the defensive end of the court is equally as important as the offensive end I don't know how big of a role he will play. I think a combo of him and Hill in the back court works great because both can handle the ball and George can play very effectively off of the ball. But again, all of this depends on Lance and his willingness to comply and stay out of trouble. On a bright note he has stayed in Indy, hasn't had any run in's with the law or even had a whiff of problems in the off season.

Yip, this was Larry's price for giving him the coaching job. He'll have a significant leash but your correct in assuming that Shaw is waiting in the wings if Frank doesn't deliver. I just hope that Brian is committed to the job he has and isn't locker room lawyering to be the front man.

I think Morway got the vote of confidence this past summer and if Bird leaves then he will move up and Pritchard will take his job.

As everyone knows a perfect storm hit this franchise several years ago. A roster that not everyone liked, the brawl, off court drama and frankly slog ball (yes it was far superior to the crap ball we've played over the past few years but let's not set the bar so low that we can just walk over it) all made for a tidal wave of fan resentment add to this the upswing of the Colts and basically the Pacers went from being the marque team on the city to frankly second class. Now having said that I'll say this. We may be on the verge of the exact opposite. The Colts are in trouble, the players are likeable, the coach is beyond likeable and on top of that we have a chance for the first time in a long time to look at a season where we can say the playoffs are expected not hoped for. It won't happen right away, but yes I think the city can come to embrace this team. If they can start off hot then frankly the lockout may be the best thing that could have happened to them as they will be the top story in town since the Colts are already done for the year.
