Pacers talk with Celtics about Rondo deal

As Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge aggressively pursues possible deals for Rajon Rondo(notes), the Indiana Pacers have emerged as an intriguing suitor for the point guard, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

For the past few days, Pacers officials – and third-party surrogates – have been making calls and gathering information and insight into Rondo’s reputation as a teammate and leader, sources said.

The Pacers and Celtics have discussed the preliminary framework of a deal, but two sources said Indiana would need a third team to provide Boston with the talent it wants to do a deal. The Celtics are likely trying to gather the necessary pieces to make a bid for Ainge’s ultimate target: New Orleans point guard Chris Paul(notes), sources said.

It was unclear if the Pacers had begun to reach out to broaden discussions, but there was an expectation they would do so.

The Celtics have been gauging Rondo’s trade value for more than a year, and have held discussions with teams about him across the past few trade deadlines and NBA drafts. There have long been divides within Boston’s front office, coaching staff and locker room about Rondo. He can be moody, difficult and stubborn, and several league sources were dubious if the Pacers’ young coach, Frank Vogel, would have the stature to deal with Rondo.

Boston could be trying to gather players to make a more attractive bid for Paul, sources said. New Orleans has shown no interest in a deal that would include Rondo and any combination of Celtics teammates. Yet, New Orleans GM Dell Demps is determined to get maximum value for Paul, if it’s clear the point guard sees his future elsewhere. Demps has no desire to simply let Paul walk away as a free agent to New York.

Most teams in the league are engaging New Orleans about Paul, whose intentions are to get to the New York Knicks as a free agent in the summer of 2012. Paul does have some history in Oklahoma City, having played there with the Hornets in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, but the Thunder have resisted dialogue on a Paul-for-Russell Westbrook(notes) deal, sources said.

The Thunder are prepared to make Westbrook a substantial contract offer – probably a maximum deal – in the near future.

Color me only partially surprised. That pretty much reaffirms what I said earlier about the FO's likely feelings about Collison. But it's surprising that we'd have Boston on the hook to consider such an offer.

Hmm, this is going to be a few couple of weeks.

    Grain o' salt.

We have a cap space, a couple of talented young players and we're going to be linked to or involved in every single trade rumor or free agent rumor until this thing is over. As much as it is going to be annoying to be involved in all of that, it's awesome at the same time. We're flexible. Finally, we have options.

Hmm, while I agree with the general sentiment, this is also Woj, who is a top NBA reporter, and there's details about what the P's have done to date. Seems like more than an idle rumor to me.

Would be nice but im not going to get my hopes to high. Just read that celtics are trying to get a deal done to try to bring in Paul...the article kinda said the same thing but just thought i throw it in.

Id would hope if we get this deal done that it includes green! That would be nice!

In other news nets are trying to offer Lopez and two first rounders for Dwight!

I agree, he knows that the pacers are investigating about Rondo's character and personality, that's not something somebody makes up.

CP3 to #CELTICS, Granger to #HORNETS, Rondo and Glen Davis to #PACERS? It works...
Don't like that deal at all to be honest.

If Wojo is great at one thing it's reporting trades.

Coming from him this is really exciting!

The Hornets aren't trading CP3 for Granger. They trade CP3 they let West walk and rebuild.

Nothing I said means he has to be wrong. We probably are talking to the Celtics. That doesn't mean anything is close, or remotely close. We're the team who had a 'done deal' fall through last year, remember? It was reported as done by major reporters.

We're going to be talking to everyone, about everyone. Don't get your hopes up every time we're linked to anything. It'll be good for your sanity this week.

Highly doubt it happens, but there's really only two pgs I'd rather have than Rondo (Paul and Rose). One thing overlooked about Rondo's game, is he may very well be the best rebounding guard in the league. Also, for all this talk about his horrible shooting, Rondo rarely takes bad shots. I'd much rather have a 50% shooting pg who understands his limitations, than an Iverson or Westbrook type who jack up 20 shots a game while struggling to hit 40%.

I wouldn't give up Paul George for Rondo.

It's nice to dream about, but I don't see any way it happens at all.

Nonetheless, this is more fun to talk about than the lockout

It's nice to dream....but I don't see why the Celtics would trade Rondo to any team UNLESS they were getting back an extended CP3 to play next to Allen, Pierce and KG.

If they Hornets don't want Rondo ( which I have no clue why they wouldn't ) and the Pacers get him, that would mean that we would be sending our assets to the Hornets. What assets do we have that we'd be willing to give up?

Assuming that the Hornets would want no part of Granger ( just like they would not want Rondo )....that would mean that the Hornets are looking at the young assets that we have left. If that is the case.....IMHO....NO ONE left on the roster is untouchable....which would mean that the Hornets or the Celtics would be able to choose from:

    1 ) 2012-2013 Pacers 1st round pick
2 ) DC ( to replace whatever Point Guard that is being shipped out )
    3 ) Hansbrough, Hibbert, GH or PG ( pick 1 )
4 ) Posey and/or a TPE to make Salaries work

IMHO.......my guess is that PG or Hibbert will be shipped out...as both have the most value.....alongside DC. If there are any legs to this, be prepared to lose either Hibbert of PG.

You don't like trading Danny Granger for Davis and Rondo?

I feel like this is some cruel joke and you all are in it and I just don't see thee punchline in it.

You do ANYTHING to get Rondo that doesn't include Paul George and hopefully not our 2012 pick.
I don't want to sound condescending, which means to talk down to you by the way
