When I was told IU had petitioned the league for Penn State to be removed from the Big Ten a year ago, I didn't think much of it. I figured it wouldn't really lead anywhere. Perhaps I was wrong:

Big Ten's response to Penn State scandal 'could' include booting Nittany Lions from league

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany and a committee of school presidents would have the power to fire coaches in a plan being considered by the league, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported today.

The child sexual assault scandal at Penn State prompted an 18-page proposal obtained by the Chronicle. A source described only as a "Big Ten leader" said one idea the league "could consider" is kicking Penn State out of the conference.

The story said the Big Ten does not have a contingency schedule ready if Penn State's football program receives the NCAA's "death penalty," which removes a team from competition for at least a full season.

    Statue has been removed.

NCAA schedules a press conference on Monday morning to discuss "unprecedented penalties".

    According to Twitter reports.

I think they should be removed from the Big Ten let whoever wants them sign them. The NCAA is not going to do anything.....

Move over SMU. It sounds like you are about to be surpassed penaltywise.

NCAA president Mark Emmert has decided to punish Penn State with severe penalties likely to include a significant loss of scholarships and loss of multiple bowls, a source close to the decision told ESPN's Joe Schad on Sunday morning.

But Penn State will not receive the so-called "death penalty" that would have suspended the program for at least one year, the source said.

The penalties, however, are considered to be so harsh that the death penalty may have been preferable, the source said.

Not sure how that wouldn't be the death penalty really. The Big 10 is going to probably kick them out of the conference and get another school to join, I know they'd probably love to get Notre Dame but that's not happening.

Well, they'd still be able to play football. The SMU death penalty completely shut down their football program for one year (plus the second year that SMU elected to shutdown themselves).

You'll probably never see that aspect of the NCAA "death penalty" ever again. But this, I think Penn State would have preferred the SMU death penalty.

And the Big Ten might even get into the act here.

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoot...tball/19633881

    So, in review:
-The NCAA will announce unprecedented sanctioned against Penn State tomorrow morning
-The Big Ten has "jurisdiction" and could even boot Penn State out of the conference (though I doubt that's going to happen)
-The Federal Government will more than likely punish Penn State for multiple violations of the Clery Act
-Law suits from the victims and their families

Unless Penn State decides to play for free or even at a loss the next 5-10 years, I can't see the Big 10 holding on to them. They're going to be a terrible football team for lord knows how long and that's where the big money comes from. Penn State may remove itself from the Big 10 and possibly DI if the costs are too expensive given how much money they're going to lose in lawsuits and negative publicity. No TV or bowl till 2015 is a killer as far as revenue goes. The 2014 option to drop out of DI seems like a hint to me that they'd like Penn State to follow up on that action.

    Darn my occasional dyslexia!

I just don't think we'll see a one year shutdown though regardless (everything else on that list is fair game though). Just too damaging after what was learned about SMU's death penalty.

Who remains at this school who had anything to do with what Sandusky did?

Still not a fan of punishing the innocent. Makes it look like this is being some just to make some people feel better. I don't see how it's punishing the guilty.

It isn't necessarily fair to everyone involved, but all the football players should be allowed to transfer with no penalty if the sanctions are harsh enough.

The Freeh report did indicate that the culture of football worship in Penn State was to blame for a pedophile using happy valley as his personal candy store. It isn't the NCAA's job to right those wrongs, but it is certainly their place to be outraged that one of their schools used one of their prized football programs to rape children.

I'd argue that the culture at Penn State needs to be torn down in order to be rebuilt. Leave football, but cripple it so badly that people in Happy Valley will have a long time to reflect on how things got to this point.

    ok, so:

-Penn State fined $60 million (roughly 1 year of football revenue), money to be donated to a sexual abuse fund
-Penn State loses 10 scholarships per year for the next 4 years
-No bowl game for the next 4 years
-All wins (112) vacated since 1998 (holy ****), and therefore Joe Paterno's wins record is gone
-All PSU football players can transfer immediately win no penalty or stay on full scholarship, even if they don't play football.

Sounds like a pretty even handed punishment. Pretty much what I suggested. Cripple the football program, but don't kill it outright. Let the innocent players abandon ship if they want.

This wasn't a competitive advantage situation. It was a criminally immoral situation that revolved around the power of the football program.

The Death penalty to me is about enforcing competitive balance. This punishment was about enforcing proper ethics.

This is actually more painful than the death penalty, from a football standpoint. A simple 1-year ban would have been swifter and kinder. Instead of no football for one year, they will be forced to watch a crippled football team for at least four years, probably more.
