Thread: Lance Stephenson's Potential?

    Default Lance Stephenson's Potential?

How good do you think this kid can be? You know hes blessed with talent, just needs to be in the right situation and it could be here!

I think he can be a Tyreke Evans clone (rookie version of Tyreke Evans)

Anyways, discuss on how good you think Stephenson can be?

He doesn't have Tyreke's body control or court sense, but I don't think it's a terrible comparison. They're both big bodied (6'5"? 6'6"?) and can play either guard position. Could he be as good as Tyreke? Probably not. Can he be a good pro who does a lot of the same things Tyreke does? Sure, I hope so.

I think he has the raw talent to be a great PG. But there are two major obstacles...or one if you want to combine them.

Call it Sarunusmarburyitis. His defense is as bad or worse than Sarunas's...who was also a fantastic offensive player. His brain is as bad or worse than Marbury's.

One or both of these issues might be fatal flaws.

He has the potential to be the best player ever to come out of NY, according to Lance.

The reality is that he might end up being a serviceable 2nd unit shooting guard who can't defend his position and will commit lots of unforced turnovers due to his propensity to try to make highlight reel passes even when they are not necessary. And that is if he lasts beyond the next couple of seasons without contracting Tinsleyosis.

    Hilarious.

I think he can be better than Jordan Crawford but not confident that he can overcome himself.

    He plays nothing like Tyreke.

I honestly believe he can be better than Jordan.

Lance has the potential to be something special. Maybe not as good as Tyreke, but defintely as good as OJ Mayo.

    He's also a Ron-Ron-type ticking time bomb.

Ultimately, it'll be up to Lance to determine if he wants to be good, or just have people saying "what if".

rookie of the year 20/5/5 (no rookie had done that since LBJ)

He was injured all last season with a bad foot. But if he is healthy he is a hell of a player on a bad team.

Not trying to jinx it, but I'm pretty impressed he's went all offseason so far and stayed out of trouble. That's a good first step, imo. Baby steps.

I think he gets cut from the Pacers within the next 18 months (once the lockout is over) for non-basketball related issues, then shapes up, gets with another team in a few years, and becomes a pretty decent player. I think he is Jalen Rose/Al Harrington-esque in that his view of his own talents and value to the team greatly exceed his actual talents (though the talent is there, it is not all-star quality), and he is Shawne Williams-esque in his ability to sabatoge his own career.

Bird loves this kid, so I highly doubt that happens. I think they'll cut him if he gets in trouble again.

This is a fantastic bit of writing.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

I think he can be a good bench player who has some big games now and then, with defense and speed limiting him somewhat.

However, I do not expect him to reach his potential or have a long NBA career due to personality traits. He's quite likely to eventually do something catastrophically stupid and get jettisoned from the ranks of pro basketball within a few years.

And predominately in Indy no less. This offseason was what had me most worried about him, NBA (albeit 2nd round) money, no coach/academic adviser hounding him, and then the lockout. Was just waiting on the Star headline...

So far, so good. I've been wrong, hope I continue to be.
