And yet Soccer in Spain thrives, even for the small teams.
If only we could get rid of college basketball and have an amateur system.

we're too far down that rabbit hole now unless we just turn our college sports into an amateur system. Personally, I like college sports, and a lot of other people do. They feel a greater connection to those teams than these pro teams.

That connection is big part of soccer. I know it would never happen, but I would like the soccer system in the NBA and get rid of college and maybe HS ball. Bad teams moving out of the top level. Let players get paid earlier and have more of a hometown connection with teams.

Probably the worst idea ever conceived.

Don't Euro-fy my American sports. They have their side of the pond and we have ours. Thanks.

%99 of Highschool and college ball have nothing to do with professional athletics. It's an avenue to a better life for a lot more people than just gifted athletes.

I'm pretty sure they still have college athletics in Europe...

    Not like the USA.

I don't see the big deal about the NCAA being a pseudo-farm system for pro leagues. It's worked for the last 50-70 years. You centralize all the talent and keep a public interest in the lower levels.

Schools can still have teams and players can still use their income or opportunities from sports for a better life Kstat.

Yes, but you separate the people who just want to be athletes from the people who want to have an education, but also play sports. If anything I'd think it would open up an opportunity for more people to have a better life.

Yes and no. It would severely hurt college funding. College sports would no longer be a big deal, and you'd see mass cuts in athletic departments.

Basketball and football fund dozens of other varsity programs/scholarships.

Probably a little off topic, but I agree with the above poster to an extent.

Currently in the NBA you have to be in college for 1 year.

Why not have it like this?

High School player can opt for the Pros. Player has to go into the D-League until the All-Star break before they can be called up to the NBA. If a player goes to College, they cannot go to the Pro's until they have completed their Junior year of college. That way, colleges won't have to worry about a kid leaving early, can just assume after 3 years if the player is really good he is going to leave. This also builds interest in the D-League.

I'm not opposed at all to a MLB-style rule where you can go to the pros right away, but if you go to college, you are locked out of the NBA for a minimum of 2-3 years.

I think this is probably the most logical route.

Not to mention all the other sports, besides basketball and football, that help kids get through college. Plus there is
relationships you develop and comradarie, teamwork etc...

Stay the **** away from my college hoops. They play defense in college, unlike the D-league or AAU circuits (or the NBA half the damn time).

The current structure isn't the problem, it's that it's basically the only option. IS the only option for football, far as I know. A lot of people hold college hoops so dear to their heart because of the whole "student athlete" shenanigans. The kids that make a program good, Final Four good, aren't majoring in anything but [insert sport]. A lot of you guys went to college, can you imagine getting your BS with the schedule these kids keep?

I love college basketball as much as anyone, but there's absolutely no reason for there not to be a viable minor league. The D-League SHOULD be, the building blocks are there, if it'd be treated as more than a glorified AAU circuit.

I honestly don't understand why anyone would be against it really. Unless y'know, it's not REALLY about the whole "name on the front of the jersey" thing and more about expecting a professional level product out of "amateurs."
