Colts to start Curtis Painter at QB

INDIANAPOLIS -- Curtis Painter will make his first NFL start at quarterback for the Colts at Tampa Bay on Monday night.

Kerry Collins is still recovering after suffering concussion-like symptoms last Sunday against Pittsburgh, and his status is uncertain for Monday's game.

The winless Colts had been preparing Painter to start in case Collins couldn't go and Peyton Manning out until at least December as he recovers from neck surgery.

"You can really only get one ready, just in terms of the amount of time you have and the time you get on the field," Colts coach Jim Caldwell said Friday. "It's very difficult to get two guys prepared to play a ballgame. He's (Painter) getting all of the work and I think he'll benefit from that."

    AFC South blog

ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky writes about all things AFC South in his division blog.

    Blog network: NFL Nation

Caldwell said Painter is looking forward to the opportunity.

"He's pretty excited about that, there's no question about it," Caldwell said. "You can see it. He's always pretty levelheaded, never too high, never too low, but you can certainly see the focus and intensity in his eyes."

Caldwell said Collins would not practice Friday, and he will be evaluated on Saturday.

"At this point, there's two days of practice missed, and some pretty important stuff that we put in. It's tough to reclaim that at this point," he said. "We'll see how his evaluation goes, but Curtis will end up starting the game."

Painter has mostly struggled during his three years with the team.

As a rookie, he famously stepped in for Manning to try to preserve Indy's unbeaten season. The 14-0 Colts pulled their starters in the third quarter against the New York Jets, and Painter's introduction to NFL regular-season play was swift and cruel.

On the first play of his second series, the former Purdue quarterback was hit from behind by linebacker Calvin Pace. Marques Douglas recovered the fumble and scored, and a 2-point conversion pass from Mark Sanchez to Dustin Keller made it 18-15. The Jets eventually won the game 29-15.

Painter completed 4 of 11 passes for 44 yards with an interception. In his six possessions, the Colts netted one first down and committed two turnovers.

Painter was worse the next week. Manning started, but Painter replaced him and completed just 4 of 17 passes for 39 yards with an interception and a fumble in a 30-7 loss at Buffalo. His passer rating was 9.8 that season.

After not playing at all in 2010, he opened this year's camp with the first unit while Manning recovered from neck surgery. The team then brought Collins out of retirement, but Painter started showing signs of progress.

He completed 11 of 21 passes for 171 yards with two TD passes in a preseason game against Green Bay. Finally, fans saw what the Colts like about Painter -- he's 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds with a powerful right arm, good mobility and a calm demeanor.

In his first regular-season action this year, Painter directed the Colts to a game-tying touchdown against Pittsburgh before Ben Roethlisberger led the Steelers to a game-winning field goal. He bounced back after Troy Polamalu returned his fumble for a touchdown.

Caldwell praised Painter's effort against the Steelers.

"The first series was just getting his feet underneath him a little bit," Caldwell said. "I thought he came back and led a nice drive and took us down the field. He did a pretty good job without having many snaps in preparation for this game."

The team has largely been supportive of Painter, a tone that was reiterated after Sunday's game.

"I'm a fan of Curtis," running back Joseph Addai said. "A lot of media, fans, really don't understand what the quarterback position goes through. Seeing Curtis come in there and make some plays, that was good for him and as teammates we're happy for him."

Manning isn't expected to return until at least December as he recovers from his third neck surgery in the past 19 months. Indianapolis signed Dan Orlovsky to the active roster this week to provide depth.

That leaves Painter as the man to get things moving in the right direction.

"I think we are all going to stick together no matter what," he said after the loss to Pittsburgh. "That is the thing about this team. It is definitely not over yet. We are going to keep going, get back to work and try to get our first win this week."

That would be a surprise for sure but I think this game will be close but the Bucs will win and not have another insurmountable comeback to deal with this time.

Putting that aside Painter needs to play so maybe this team will realize if he should be kept or discarded(yeah wishful thinking)

I feel odd saying but I am glad Painter will start.

He has been around for a couple of years now and even though he isn't Peyton's replacement they did keep him around for reasons. Even though I have criticized the front office before I do not believe they would have kept Curtis around if they didn't think he was a capable backup.

So from that standpoint I am glad that he will play. I think he will do better than people expect and I think the Colts will win Monday.

I don't think Painter leads the Colts to the playoffs or even a winning record. I think if he keeps playing from here on out that he will look better and better each week. Playing QB is no easy task especially in the Colts offense where so much of it is timing and rhythm. Those are two things you don't get sitting on the bench as a backup.

Really? I wouldn't take too much from what you saw last Sunday or even what you will see Monday night. This team is really, really bad but their one strength (defensive ends) attempted to synch with Pittsburgh's biggest weakness (offensive line) and that, combined with a team that is used to being competitive and doesn't want to get embarrassed on national TV, kept us in the game.

Painter deserves a shot. Collins was obviously a 4 million dollar waste.

That said, if Painter look like the Painter we've come to know and love - consistently short hopping the out route, for example - they better damn well give Orlovsky a shot.

Painter has the opportunity of a lifetime, but I must say I'm shocked he's even playing professionally. I believe he made an NFL roster simply because he has a strong arm. He did not exactly tear it up at Purdue...and this is the NFL...AND the QB position is by far the most important one on this Colt team. Now, if we had a strong running game, it would be different. But this is a pass heavy offense that requires a lot of precise execution by the QB. It is going to be very tough for him to avoid picks...

    All signs point to 0-16...

The last two times I've seen Painter was against the Packers and the Steelers and he looked pretty darn good all things considered. Led 3 td drives even.

I think he's going to suprise everyone tommorow night. I don't think Reggie Wayne would habe stuck his reputation on the line for this guy like he did in pre season, if he didn't have 100% confidence in Curtis's ability.

Also, Tampa Bay has one of the worst pass defenses in the league so far and Joe Addai has quietly been outstanding, averaging 5 yards a run. So Painter has a run game to lean on.

It will get even easier if he can get a lead and let Freeney and Mathis run wild on the Bucs inexperienced tackles.

I think the Colts can steal this one.

Well the Colts are still fighting Miami, St. Louis, and Minny in the Luck sweepstakes. I guess the other consolation prize would be the Colts playing that last place schedule next year.

I look at this as a pretty bad match up for the Colts. They are going against a big running back in Blount and a mobile QB in Freeman. As far as their pass defense is concerned they made Matt Ryan look like he didn't belong in the NFL a week ago.

    Predictions,
I expect one fumble by painter and a interception but we may be able to get that back with Mathis and Freeney. If we have 3 turnovers and under a hundred yards rushing then we lose this game and I fully expect us to lose this game.

They did pretty good against a big running back and a mobile qb last week

True but that O-line was dinged up much more than the Bucs are currentl. I expect us to get run on much like the Brown did to us 2 weeks ago. If we can run the ball on them then we stand a chance but I don't think Painter has the experience yet to beat a potential playoff team.

This Suck for Luck campaign is even worse than everybody wanting Bird's head a few years back. I love Colts fans wanting to lose. It's great really. Instead of hoping for a Jets collapse (which will probably happen), a Steelers meltdown (possible), Oakland/Cincinatti/Cleveland to to be the usual Oakland/Cincinatti/Cleveland (always a good chance), and a Colts run, you'd rather keep losing? What a joke. No wonder the media labels Colts "fans" as a bandwagon bunch. They'd rather lose for a year, so they can get a "savior" and be good again. Embarrasing. Almost as embarrasing as Madonna performing at halftime of the Super Bowl. My favorite post so far this year is the Purdue graduate/fan or whatever he is saying "Lets Go Bucs!" Weeeeeeeeeeeeee, die-hard.

Painter isn't that bad and if he is, I know he's better than Collins which is good enough for 3+ wins.

We can beat Tampa, we can beat KC, we can beat Cincy, we can beat Tennessee, Atlanta is overrated, we can beat Jacksonville, we can beat Carolina, and we have a shot to beat Houston in Lucas Oil. Call me crazy, but I'd rather go 10-6 than 0-16.

I am a die-hard fan. Of the Bucs. So find a new favorite post.

Also, every Colts fan would take 10-6 over 0-16 I think. Choice is most likely 4/5 wins vs. 0 wins though.

    and a Colts run,
Might be some of us are not buying there will be a Colts run. Also without getting into the big debate whether we're Drs. or not IMHO Peyton will not be back this year. The only reference I have on this is my wife went through similar surgery (discs in the neck bad, cadaver's disc inserted), with the additional titanium rod with screws (not Peyton as far as we know). It took a year for her to feel normal again. Sorry to say but she has to be very careful to this day not to tweak it or pain returns. As others have noted this could be career ending.
