The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

As far as what Rush said, I had to laugh with his comments about George not having the killer instinct. Really Brandon? sounds to me you are talking about yourself there
There are a lot of parallels between what people were saying about Brandon after his rookie season an Paul, except expectations are higher for Paul.

So it's not earth shattering news, and if anyone can spot the signs of a guy being too passive it's Brandon. He even said that this could change for Paul.

His comments about Collision were clear and unexpected, and you could say he was bashing Darren by saying what he did. But I don't think he was bashing PG.
If you watched Paul in college you would be clear he wants to be the guy and the leader and was. He was the alpha dog and if anything was to aggressive in college. Being passive was never his knock in college. He did struggle in big games but getting triple teamed will do that to you. Paul was the 5th option last year if you give him a bigger role and tell him he needs to score he will. But he is still very raw it will take time.

The is a Pacer fan site. We are hear because we care about the Pacers. Fans should not need to be defended here. I could care less about wether this was a game of telephone or either party was lying or embellishing the truth, it couldn't be proven anyways. This was just something that some guy said, don't try to treat it like it came from a journalist. It should never be about fan vs. player. This is not a site about the fans, the fan shouldn't ever be made the subject of debate. The only way to "defend" the author would be to call rush a liar, is that really what you want? I would personally hate if every conversation I had with new people was treated like an interview (with no direct quotes just an authors naturally slanted recollection)meant for the worlds eyes. He gets paid millions to deal with it, but it still would suck. We never heard what rush actually said or the questions he was asks. There was no way to judge implication and I don't see why there is a need to defend the authors post as the absolute truth.

Brandon is just an honest guy last year he talked like he did to doc paul to me for about an hour. I was very surprised how open he was but I take it that's just how the guy is. For his sake I hope he goes some where that a coach will use him and use him properly. He would be a perfect fit in Miami and a few other good teams. For his sake I hope he gets to go there and be happy. Because the Pacers last year really did him a dis service last year. He should of been in the rotation but wasnt kind of sad.

Me, Dahntay, and Paul George are going to play on a team with a couple of guys from New York" "All pro, it's going to be fun". He asked me what I thought of the lockout circumstance, and I told him that I could see points on both sides of the argument, but that they would be idiots if they couldn't figure out a way to keep up the momentum and not lose games. He agreed, reiterating that there's a lot of player movement that he believes will happen once things open up, and that he's been strategizing with his agent a lot.
For me, the main concern is if Wells runs with this story and it is assumed to be true (and I fully believe it to be), how steep is the fine from the league going to be for Brandon? Nobody from either side is permitted to comment on the lockout whatsoever are they, and there suposedly are ridiculously high fines for making such comments aren't there?

If so, Brandon could take a big hit from a situation that he had no real reason to expect to blow up to the level that it might, and that is too bad because he just chose to be real and genuine and give a fan what the fan wanted, which was an insider truth on the state of his team.

I believe the players can talk all they want about the lockout. It is the team that cant comment. Dont quote me on that but players have been talking about the lockout a lot i interviews. And even if he could be fined Wells isn't gonna run a story that will get a player fined. That would put his career in jeopardy.

I don't see you guys in the press bench next to Bruno, or going to locker room press releases, or player interviews. Maybe the front page can be taken as press-like, but I see it as far as a opinion pieces. Blogs. A front page on a forum for fan's thoughts.

"too big for its britches" may seem accusatory initially, but I think heywoode has defined that.

Re: Ran into Rush at the Atlanta airport...

First of all, I thank you for taking the time to explain. I'm glad also that you didn't take my responses to be hostile; they weren't meant to be, but firing off three different replies in disagreement like that can come across as such.

Originally posted by heywoode View Post

It didn't necessarily have to be "sensational", just meaty enough to be served up as an article. That is where I think the line is crossed. That is the line between fans having a conversation, and fans having a conversation with the media listening, watching, reading and then moving forward with that. It would be the same as inviting Wells to a forum party. Not something I think would be cool, and I think the people present would be less likely to speak openly.
I just don't see any evidence of that.

The only correlation between all that and PD is that I see a small parallel, meaning that I think PD has gotten so popular that more and more must be considered and contemplated before posting. There is at least one example of this I can think of, but I don't care to discuss it here. I'm not saying this place is horrible. I like this place. I used to LOVE this place. The change due to this site's popularity, in my mind, is the reason for that change. Just my opinion. I'm not trying to disparage you, Mark. I'm not implying that you are some puppet for the Pacers, and I'm not trying to disparage the Pacers either. Hey, I LOVE the Pacers. I just feel like there needs to be a clear separation to the point of being able to post whatever and not worry about what someone will think about it. I don't want one of my posts or my opinions to be a topic in some staff meeting!
I understand your concern, though I still disagree in terms of my reaction to it versus how you're responding to it. I just don't see it as a threat. Could it potentially cause problems? I suppose, but personally I find it unlikely. I think players have at least a decent understanding of where they stand with one another (in ways we likely aren't aware of in the public, usually), and otherwise I think whatever gets written here is just seen as chatter to Pacers/media people. At best they may glean ideas from us on occasion, but I don't think it goes beyond that, and that in and of itself doesn't really bother me, personally. Maybe it should, but I'm not currently aware of anything that would make me feel otherwise.

Even if there is no direct link with PS&E, there is enough of an implied presence that it is almost like, "Well, the Pacers are watching this place now...everybody think about what you're posting and how it will be perceived by them before you actually post it." I don't believe that has ever been stated here by the admins, but it seems to be at least a consideration. Again, my opinion.
What specifically are you worried will happen depending on what you say or what someone else says? I can't think of anything that would cause significant damage short of a player himself coming on here and making some kind of outrageous post(s).

The folks that do occasionally participate are either with the media (Mark Boyle, Chris Denari) or with PS&E (like Rob) to communicate with people they generally are already in contact in other ways (like the Area 55 people).

I'm not saying PS&E employees are bad for this place. The few I actually know or have met seem very cool. Got no problem with them. Just seems to make me (and some other posters I've had this conversation with) a bit uneasy and feeling like it is getting too big, and the eventual downfall is an inevitability. I don't want that to happen. It's not the impending apocalypse. I might be crazy. Who knows. I trust my instincts, and my instincts tell me this place is more public and watched than it used to be, and it makes me more uncomfortable.
Again though, what are you uneasy about saying, and what worries you? Are you worried you're going to make someone mad? How? What could you possibly say that's going to cause damage to you? I'm trying to imagine what that might be, but nothing immediately springs to mind. If you're not comfortable saying, feel free to shoot me a PM.

In a vacuum, yes, you should only say something you would be comfortable reading in the paper. People are human, and sometimes say things that they don't necessarily contemplate will make it to the masses. Unfortunately, in this day and age, a conversation you could be having while standing in an alley or sitting on a public crapper could end up on the front page. I hate that about this day and age.

Now, having said all of the above, I'm sorry my comments weren't more concise. I was trying to make a statement that needed a couple pages, and I tried to say all that in a couple of sentences. I should've been more explanatory, and I apologize for not being so...I'm not mad or upset, and I don't want to make anyone else mad or upset. Except for Wells... ()

Let us have our conversations without worrying that we are going to cause grief to the people we so admire, will ya?!

Definitely not implying anything like this, sorry for the confusion. I can see where you're coming from here, and I apologize for not being clear enough.

Definitely this. Hope my large postings above clear this up...Thanks for the extra help, Major.
Fair enough. Thanks again for the clarification.

Everything he said sounded non-basketball related to me. I don't think it's that far-fetched of an opinion. Paul was more passive on offense than everyone else at times.

I'll quote you on that because it's absolutely correct. The league told its employees (that does not include the players, nor could it while the players are locked out) not to discuss the lockout or to discuss the players. The players are free (aside from if the NBPA tells them otherwise, I guess) to say what they want.

And then he's moved to the starting position, where he is most definitely the fifth option. Good for PG for knowing not to ruffle feathers.

Brandon on the other hand, could have easily become the first or second option on the second unit (and it probably would have helped the team), but forced the team to make him the fifth. (and this is behind Jeff and Josh..) because more often then not, when he'd get the ball..he'd hesitate so that his defender could be in his face, take a dribble or two, and pass the ball out (of the corner..where he stayed..even after Vogel took over.)

I like Brandon, but there is a little bit of a lack of self awareness with some of his thoughts.

And..I wonder..how come he didn't drive to the basket more with Vogel?
I agree with this. Sure Paul was passive when he was the starter, but I believe that was his role in the starting 5. He was the fifth option. But off the bench he was much more assertive because thats what his role was.

And I find it funny about him not having that killer instinct when the dude hit multiple buzzer beater shots at the end of quarters. I know its not like hitting a game winner, but it still shows something. There is pressure and Paul hit a good amount of them, in a variety of ways, and they were called for him. Vogel had confidence in Paul to hit them and I think that speaks to what killer instinct Paul has more than what Rush said.

I'm very surprised how open and honest Rush was with a fan. He knows about PD, he knows about twitter, he knows what he said would get out. When you are in a position like this, and you are talking to fans (the public) you need to think about what you are saying. It does come off like he thinks he will be traded before the season starts, which could be why he was so open.

As far as what Rush said, I had to laugh with his comments about George not having the killer instinct. Really Brandon? sounds to me you are talking about yourself there

Well maybe Rush, IF he said those things... Feels that PG is a lot more talented and should have attack more on offense.
I'm not perfect and neither are you.

After being dormant for basically the entire summer, PD erupts with the ferocity of Pompeii in its prime. Thanks, docpaul!

By the way, if he had left the player identification empty, my first guesses would probably have been TJ or McBob, followed closely by Brandon.

Being passive was never his knock in college. He did struggle in big games but getting triple teamed will do that to you. Paul was the 5th option last year if you give him a bigger role and tell him he needs to score he will. But he is still very raw it will take time.
I did watch him. I'm aware that he was aggressive shooting the ball - too aggressive (as you alluded to) in the sense that he took a lot of shots and his shot selection was inconsistent. But I don't think that being aggressive is all there is to being "that dude." It's about talent and offense but also about attitude/personality, doing all the little things, and making your teammates better, at least in my opinion.

I'm not saying he can't be at the NBA level - I think he can - I'm just making the point that questioning this aspect of his potential is not something new. Going into the draft a number of scouts thought the game seemed to come so easily to PG that he would coast at times. Having seen him for much of his college career, I agreed. Here's one reference, a collection of evaluations by multiple authors. There are more out there on the web, poke around for them if you are interested:

"George has been criticized for his laid-back demeanor dating back to his high school days...The biggest factor for George will be whether or not he lands on a team where he’ll be pushed consistently by the coaching staff and challenged to reach his full potential as a player. While his talent is impossible to ignore (and his ceiling is obviously incredibly high), George still has plenty to prove in terms of his ability to impact the game in a manner that is conducive to winning games -- his Fresno State squad underachieved badly this year. He must show that he can play with a killer instinct and display the willingness to do whatever it takes on both ends of the floor to help his team win."

"He can be very nonchalant with the basketball at times...That nonchalant nature is consistent with his personality, which has raised questions about his on court effort. He tends to coast at times, just running up and down the court without great energy and not showing a real disposition to dominate the fairly weak competition he plays against in the WAC, something that obviously won’t cut it in the NBA."

Here's another one: "...looking like his head isn't fully in the game."

Again, I'm not knocking PG, I have high hopes for him and I expect him to grow into the leading scorer for this team someday. But it's silly to pretend like what BRush said has no truth to it or hasn't been said before.
