Question Lockout Challenge: Pacers all-time Signed Free Agent team (Results in post #45)

We all expect the Pacers to be (somewhat) active in the free agent market. But how have they fared in the past? The challenge is to name the top free agent they've ever signed at each of the 5 positions. I've filled in one position to help you get started.

    SG:
    SF: Alex English

Just going off memory I can't think of a better center signed as a free agent the Sam Perkins. Byron Scott was a backup but I can't think of a better sg that we've signed. I can think of very few starters that we've signed as free agents.

The only other people I can remember us signing as free agents would have been Duane Ferrell, Ricky Pierce, and Eddie Johnson. None of them could have supplanted Byron. (And I think his veteran presence at the time we signed him was more key than any stats he put up for us while he was here, besides the game winner against Orlando in game 1 in 1994).

and this reason alone is the reason I said we have no shot to compete for a title unless we get lucky via the draft.

I believe we drafted Dale Davis and traded for Steven Jackson.

Jackson was a trade. I'm referring to the 2005 signing of Dale.

It was just a little bit before my time, but did we trade for Mark Jackson both times?

Jackson was technically a sign and trade during the offseason and he was a free agent, so it could be looked as a free agent gain.
"It's just unfortunate that we've been penalized so much this year and nothing has happened to the Pistons, the Palace or the city of Detroit," he said. "It's almost like it's always our fault. The league knows it. They should be ashamed of themselves to let the security be as lax as it is around here."

(I assume you're talking about Stephen Jackson and not Mark Jackson)

As king of this thread, I'm going to make a ruling on sign and trades.

In the case of Stephen Jackson we gave up Al Harrington to get him. I don't believe there was any chance of us signing Jackson outright had Atlanta not been willing to take Harrington. So I can't consider Jackson a free agent acquisition.

Now take the case of Atlanta signing Joe Johnson. In that case they signed him outright but sent two 1st round picks to Phoenix so that the Suns wouldn't match the offer. In that case I consider it a free agent acquisition.

There are also the cases like Lebron where a sign and trade is arranged so that the player can get a max contract. Those cases should count as free agent acquisitions because they were likely to happen anyway, the player just would have gotten less money without the sign and trade.

    I have spoken.

Al Harrington the 2cd. time was closer to a free agent signing. He was a free agent with Atlanta who took our 1st. round pick and trade exception in a sign and trade. Technically a trade though.

Yeah, I'm struggling with that one. We could not have signed him outright as a free agent and I don't think he would have taken the mid level exception. But not only did we give them the 1st round pick, we also took on the salary of John Edwards. So we took on additional salary above Al's contract.

Hmmmmm. Are we sure he was a free agent? It doesn't look like his salary jumped much that year. About 10%.

Eddie Johnson was strictly a salary dump..

Plumlee reminds me of a young Dale Davis. Good rebounding and he contests shots well on defense and his offensive game is very raw just like DD's was coming out of college.
