    That's crazy.

The idea of no Peyton for a season and the Colts being terrible.

Looks like an early preview of a new era for the Indianapolis Colts.

    Get ready Kerry Collins!

*edit* For the first time in a long time, the >

Should be fun to see how many people will hurry off the Colts bandwagon this season if the Colts are terrible due to no Peyton and/or he's not 100%.

Life's too short to worry about unconfirmed rumors. I'll panic when it's official.

If this is true and Peyton is out another 4 to 8 weeks and they don't call Warner or Favre, I feel like they are mailing in the season and this is not the year to mail it in. not with the sb in Indy.

Ive seen Kerry Collins play. If that's there best plan B, then someone needs to lose there job.

I haven't lost total confidence in Painter. I think he has the talent, but it's time to get real abd call Favre or Warner.

I would definitely call Warner. He seems very confident in his ability to start still from his interview on Dan Patrick not to long ago. He said that he thought he was better than some starters out there today and I believe him.

I hope Peyton is ready week 1. I'm not even a Colts fan, but I love watching him play.

Have not seen any other reports that go as far as JMV, but it would appear highly unlkely that Manning will play in game #1 and it appears likely that he is going for further medical evaluation of his neck.

Now, now, now... I'm sure if it was the playoffs Manning could play

There could be a positive here if it gets the Colts to reevaluate some of the flaws in the system and their over-reliance on Manning to always bail them out.

...Although losing Manning for a portion or all of the season when Indy has the SB would seem to be a nightmare scenario for all involved.

3 wins (being optimistic) without #18.

Favre / Warner aren't the answer. They MAYBE make the Colts a 6, 7 win team. Is that expense worth a few more wins ?? I think not.

Getting in a position to draft Luck wouldn't be a bad thing.

JMV = most uninformed 'sportscaster' in the city. As someone else said - it would be Peyton's 3rd, not 2nd operation. He makes me change the station - even when I just hear his voice in a commercial. How anyone listens to him is beyond me.

The Weather Channel has some damn good looking gals. (Just trying to bring something positive to the thread.)

I'm expecting the absolute worst. Any news stating he'll be available for more than 6 games this season and I'll be happy! Again, as I've said since the beginning, we'll see what the colts confirm...

In all honesty - and flame me if you must - if Peyton misses more than a game or two, the QB I have most confidence in currently was just a victim of the last round of cuts.

Collins has a lot of experience, even a SB appearance, but I've just never been a fan of his game. Painter...well, I think I've made clear how I feel about him leading us.

EDIT - Now, if the O - line develops/gels (AND FAST!!!!) and we can develop a decent run game, then Collins becomes much more viable. There seems to be no reason to expect this in the time frame we need it, though. No doubt Collins would benefit from a formidable defense as well. Again, not sure that's realistic.

Indianapolis Colts Statement on Peyton Manning’s Status

In response to a number of media inquiries, the Colts issue the following update on Peyton Manning’s status.

During the last week, the rate of improvement in Peyton’s rehabilitation process slowed. Over the weekend Peyton experienced soreness in his back. It was originally thought to be a normal reaction to his rehabilitation regimen. When the soreness persisted, the Colts medical team decided to initiate diagnostic tests and to consult with a number of specialists around the country who have been involved in Peyton’s case from the outset. That process continues. As a result of the most recent development the doctors have decided that Peyton will not practice. His participation therefore, in Sunday’s game versus Houston will likely be doubtful. We will update his playing status as required by NFL policy as the week goes on.

At the conclusion of the diagnostic process, if there are any new developments in the prognosis which we outlined for Peyton at the start of training camp we will report them. As of now Peyton continues to deal with a complicated neurological recovery, the end date of which is unpredictable.

As was stated at the outset, it serves no useful purpose to speculate about hypothetical outcomes. When and if there are concrete medical facts to report we will do so.

We appreciate your consideration in this matter.

In other words, JMV's source was overblowing the story.

Not necessarily, that statement leaves open the possibility of just about anything. Read over it again, it was written like something by a political speechwriter that says a whole lot while simultaneously saying absolutely nothing.

So the downward slide begins...it had to happen sometime, I guess.

There's no way you can come to that conclusion. Like DC said, read the statement again. It does nothing to negate/affirm him needing another surgery. Instead, all it says is that he is in the process with meeting specialists.

Regardless, it's pretty clear that he won't be playing on Sunday. The Colts saying Peyton Manning is "doubtful" a full 6 days before a game tells you how dire the situation is.

Actually, I'd think the statement strengthens JMV's statement. Probably some doctor IS saying there could be a potential need for another surgery and the reaching out ("to consult with a number of specialists around the country") is for other opinions on that surgery.

The colts signed Collins for two years and 14M. I doubt they thought he would be filling in for a single game or possibly two at those $$

His deal is $4M this year (2.5 signing, 1.5 salary) and 10M for next year. Which he'll never see. Even if Peyton looses an arm.

Yeah, and I doubt a close to 40 dude who was retired would come back unless he was told there was a good chance he'd be getting some significant playing time.
