Thread: Indiana University Athletics Thread 2011-2012

One trip to the NCAAs in 6 years capped by a 15-16 record with what was supposed to be his best team is not exactly evidence for him getting screwed at UAB.

Maybe it's a realistic outcome for UAB, but Davis has promised more and they expected more.

then 14-15, 15-14, and 19-12 was not particularly a stellar way to wrap up his IU tenure either.

Once the Knight recruits were gone, he looked lost and it was in a great age of Indiana high school talent, in which he couldn't get guys like Oden, Carney, and others to commit, or worse didn't TRY top get other top talent (older Zeller brother, for example, Sean May, others).

Oden told him flat out that he and Conley were going to go to school together, and Davis still refused to recruit Mike. Not only that, he then sent a recruiting packet to Conley's address, meant for a different recruit.

That story came directly from Greg's mouth. Davis reaped what he sowed.

The story about him sending Conley a wrong letter is one of the best of all time. I remember that making it around the high school bball circuit. What a failure.

Funny accidental tweet today by Tom Crean... Kinda creepy. He immediately deleted it, but it was still around long enough for people to notice. He said it was meant for a recruit he talked to.

"I am doing great. I have been thinking about you alot since last weekend. A whole lot. How are you doing?"

    Lol I love Crean.

    Well two things

    1) You and I have vastly different definitions of what just fine means

    2) Doing just fine at Indiana isn't acceptable. Every 4 year player at IU since like 1950 has been a member of a ranked team. You have to do better than just fine

IU opens the 2012-13 basketball season with home games against North Dakota State and Sam Houston State as part of the Legends Classic.

I still think there's a pretty good chance we land him in the end. Even so, given that he committed before he was even in high school, this is hardly a surprise.

Funny how he decommits AFTER IU got good and is entering the coming season with a ton of hype.

Credible sources have indicated O$U and UK are likely destinations. I don't see the appeal of either one of those schools at this point over IU.

Looks like Blackmon Jr could be the next to leave. Good thing Crean is relentless on the recruiting trail.

Kentucky I get, especially if you are a top 10, one-and-done type of player. Ohio State--meh. Never have seen the appeal there. I'm not even excited to apply there for grad school.

Lyles still says IU is number 1, so whatever, I'm not overly panicked. It's up to them if that is what they want to do, they are kids after all. A verbal commitment is worth pretty much poop anyway.

I know it's a joke, but if only the NCAA quit ****ing around and didn't let a kid be APPROACHED until after his sophomore year, let alone commit. The entire system's laughable. "Amateur" basketball either needs entirely divorced from college athletics or it needs a sport specific governing body, that doesn't include Nike/Adidas/Under Armour/AAU "assistants." It's not a School X pays Payer Y under the table, it's the integrity of post-secondary education. Athletics has destroyed it, all because we want to root for our alma maters instead of some kind of regional quasi-professional program the way Europe does it. These kids are in school majoring in basketball, make it reality.

I'm sorry, you are SO right. There is no way the preseason #1 team in the country with some of the best facilities, traditions, and fan support in the country compares to UK or O$U.

IU isn't Butler- we are the big boys.

I meant Kentucky. They are on an entirely different level than IU. To say there isn't an appeal to choose UK, is just blind homerism.

Ohio State is different. I think it's basically the same level as IU. They don't have as much traditional recognition, but the time elapsed since IU was a factor is pretty substantial. I don't know what the statute of limitations is among the kids born in the mid-90's but a lot of these kids have seen a lot more success, and more importantly NBA players, come out of Columbus than Bloomington.

You are half right. There is no way the preseason #1 team in the country with some of the best facilities, traditions, and fan support in the country compares to UK. It just doesn't.

It does compare to Ohio State.

If IU wins a title this year and Cody is selected number 1, don't we then probably play on the same field as UK? My opinion is we do. Right now they definitely stand a tier above us though.

Y'all gotta remember, Blackmon's Dad played at UK and he and Lyles are best buds. Wouldn't be surprised if that is the play here. Don't really care, and I will wait to see how it plays out. Still really early.

Goodman of CBS reporting UK and Cuse were the two teams poking around Lyles that caused him to decommit from IU. You have to wonder how much longer Crean and Cal's "friendship" will continue. They are too close now for it to last IMO.

It obviously bridges the gap but doesn't get to their level.

If you are a high school kid who has legit NBA dreams, you want to play for Cal. You don't care who wins the NCAA title.

It's not knocking IU to say they're not on UK's level. Truthfully, nobody is. hoosierguy can talk about IU's tradition, fan support, and facilities all he wants but not a single one of those things is better than Kentucky's.

In Cal's 3 years at Lexington they've had the following draft picks:

    2012: 1st, 2nd, 18th, 29th, 42nd, and 46th
    2011: 3rd, 8th, 45th, and 53rd
    2010: 1st, 5th, 14th, 18th, 29th

Kentucky has put 15 players into the NBA in the last 3 years! It's unheard of. Add in Derrick Rose, Marcus Camby, and Tyreke Evans and you've got a guy with a proven history of taking elite prospects and turning them into elite draft picks for the life of his career. Has Crean had a top-5 pick besides Dwyane Wade and potentially Cody? I honestly don't know, but none comes to mind. Wade was a fluke in that he was a Prop-48 kid who nobody had any idea was capable of what he ended up being. Not even Crean. Cody is an extreme exception to the rule when it comes to elite talents in that he seems to be more concerned with his college experience than his career potential.

I would LOVE to see IU to win the title and watch Cody get taken first in the draft. But that would have to happen a few times before they could be considered near Kentucky's level. And once seems to be pretty unlikely.
