Thread: Indiana University Athletics Thread 2011-2012

Cool thing is, if IU gets into the tourney: a) they would be underdogs on a neutral court who have proven they can take down top teams, which is an ideal role for them and b) even if they don't make it all the way (they won't), guys like Zeller, Watford, Oladipo, Sheehey etc. get invaluable experience to bring to next year's considerably-more-talented squad. "Senior" (Zeller will be a soph) leadership will be huge next year.

That's what people lose sight of. Even being a bubble team that falls into NIT territory would be a tremendous improvement.
I don't think of it this way. This team proved they are better than they have shown the past few years. They proved they could play with (and beat) anyone. I would be furious if we completely fell apart and missed the NCAA tournament. I refuse to accept and be happy with a season like that. They showed more. I want more.

A win in Madison tonight would be a big helping of "more"! It will take a herculean effort. Badgers are more beatable there than in a long time, but are on a roll right now after the inauspicious start.

I would be upset as well if this team fell apart and missed the tournament but there was no way this team was not going to have setbacks this season.

They are a 12 win team plus Cody Zeller. Starting 15-1 was unthinkable before this season began.

I like the aggressiveness of driving in to the basket..... But Zeller has only touched the ball like twice.. your best player needs the ball more than that.

Solid coaching by Crean there. Way to leave Zeller on the bench when we needed him most. ****ing moron.

Big assist to the refs in this game too. They have been really awful.

Frustrating to watch this team start 15-1 and now we are in a stint of losing 4 of 5.. grew too high of expectations.. the record is right around where it should be.. but its frustrating seeing us spin our wheels now after such a fast start

Meh...another winnable game they just failed to close. Decided to stop rebounding the last five minutes or what? Zeller looked like a whimp the when he finally got back in. It's just going to be a learning process, but I do think they will be a bubble team at best. They just don't have the killer instinct & focus in crunch time right now.

Yup, the magic's gone. For now, at least. Still time to right the ship before the tournament, but we'd better not have any more Minnesota/Nebraska letdowns.

The officiating in this conference is damned embarrassing. How do you miss the foul on that rebound after you nailed Zeller with his 4th on a much less physical play? What a joke.

We played very well, I wouldn't say the magic's gone, just that we let two very winnable games (Minn and Neb) slip away, if we had played with the same intensity in those two games as we did tonight, we would have won easily.

We never had a chance to win that game. I will complain about refs, but usually they are pretty even in their BS foul calling distribution, but tonight it was Grade A bull ****. The Zeller fouls were horseshit. We got called for every ticky tack foul on defense, yet Zeller was repeatedly getting hammered inside (among others) and the refs swallowed their whistle. I don't blame the team for this loss. I blame the refs, and I blame Crean's incredibly stupid decision to leave Zeller on the bench until there was just one minute left in the game. Genius move there, Crean.

I'm seething over that no call on the rebound. If that gets called Zeller is going to the line and has a chance to make it a one point game...just a completely back breaking missed call by the officials. Rarely can you point to one singular call and say "That could have changed the game." Well, that COULD have changed the game....just...****.

Definitely not his best move, but I have to wonder if it would have even mattered. Zeller was getting **** on by the refs all game.

Refs are gonna swallow their whistle on the road in the B1G. If IU just did their jobs on the board tonight, it wouldn't have come down to 1-2 rebounds gone awry because of bad calls. Watford and Zeller were soft inside all night, offensively and defensively.

Props to VJ3 for actually playing very, very well.

I think, besides being soft on the interior, Oladipo's lack of...well, anything...is really hurting IU most right now. Hopefully he becomes a more consistent player as he gets older. When he's good, he's very good.

Just going to be hard for this team to win consistently against B10 competition until they develop more inside toughness. Most likely that means a year or two down the road when Zeller has more experience and (HOPEFULLY) some more talent to help out on the interior. Looks like many of the early predictions of .500ish record in B1G play were accurate and should be our expectation.

P.S. - And learn to close road games.

This team just needs to hold serve at home and they make the tourney easily.

It would be nice if we could find a way to get another road win (Iowa and/or Minny would be good candidates).

One thing I like about this is that we're slipping back into "upstart" status, which is always fun. Takes the pressure off when you're not supposed to win, anyway.

It would take an epic collapse to miss the tourney at this point. 21 wins would lock us in, IMO.

MSU is almost a certain home loss right now.

Nah, there are no certain home losses, even with the team struggling. The Hall is still a very difficult place to play.

I enjoyed the big wins early in the season, but I felt we were over-achieving. I think we've now come back to earth a bit, and have to find a way to start clicking again. We're close in a bunch of games, just have to get over the hump.

Home games should help, as I feel the Big 10 for the most part, takes home-court advantage to a new level. That's why it's hard to win on the road. Though there are games where officials are good, and poor regardless.

I think 4-5 more wins total, and IU is a locked for the tourney, likely a 7-10 seed. Big 10 tourney will say a lot of well

A win tonight would show me the team has definitely adjusted themselves to life in the big ten. We know winning on the road will be tough this year but at least we can rock back to back wins at home.

IU has shown they can beat the teams it should beat at home. The losses to Penn State, Iowa, and (hopefully) Northwestern are a thing of the past.

With this win not only does IU assure itself of a non-losing record (the worse they could finish is 17-16) but they also got their fifth conference win- the most under Crean. Not much but it shows that this team is improving.
