Thread: Indiana University Athletics Thread 2011-2012

One nice thing emerged in the 2nd half- getting Cody the ball in other places. I know he can shoot, but I think he shot the first jumpers of his college career on Sunday. Made lots of them in HS, I understand, even longer ones.

Also, and more importantly, he used his passing ability in the high post and also drove around people a time or two. We are too bad at post feeds to rely solely on our best and most consistent player being taken away by preferring just a limited amount of space on the low blocks.

I actually thought we played pretty well in the second half. The defense is still struggling mightily, but the offense responded nicely.

rumor is Gunner Kiel is decommiting from LSU and leaning toward Notre Dame kid needs to make up his mind already.

To the point of vomiting with each decommitment.

I don't understand why IU fans (not saying you guys, just general sense I get reading around a few places) have such a huge resentment of Kiel. Do you really blame him for not wanting to play for the worst CFB program in the NCAA? At least he gave them a chance to make an impression. They failed. Which isn't to say it was Coach Wilson's fault (first year, still weeding out malcontents, trying to get his own guys in), but I don't know why anyone would have expected Kiel to actually stay with IU after it was apparent they'd be lucky to win a single game last year.

Why did he commit in the first place? Nobody would have been bothered by the decision if he hadn't first decided IU and then backed out.

Football used to be an irrelevant sport in the vast majority of high schools in Indiana, so IU didn't have much hope in football, needing to recruit passed-over players, mostly from out-of-state. Now that Indiana high schools have overall elevated their level of football prowess, there is a least hope that local talent will stay local and make IU football at least competitive. Kiel was a test of that idea, seemed to even support the concept, then it fell apart.

I think it's how much he sold the IU commitment, rolling around fully decked out in IU gear at all times, and talking about how his commitment was such a family decision and he wanted to stay close to home, but what really annoys me is that he goes and commits to LSU and then decides, no, that's not it either. Kid went from having such a quiet recruitment to having an over the top one. Makes all the crap he spewed about it being such a well thought out decision that he wouldn't make quickly seem pretty hollow.

De-committing from IU was pretty understandable. Besides seeing the on the field woes he also had a family member on the team who more likely than not relayed some not so positive internal things to him. (Edit: And I could see how he could give a little too much weight to the local school just down the road..)

But this 2nd de-committal (if it happens) is straining the benefit of the doubt I was willing to extend to him.... straining it majorly...

OTOH... it's his education, his career, and his life.... He should take time with the decision and make sure he studies ALL the angles before wasting other people's time.

Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

He wasted everyone's time as soon as he committed to LSU.

LSU was the perfect fit for his game and to learn before going to the NFL. Going to IU or ND will hinder him LSU ran the perfect offense for his style of play.

Personally, I couldn't care less about Gunner Kiel. As soon as he decommitted, that was it for me. I actually like LSU and Notre Dame, so I will root for him to succeed. But he has shown himself to be quite fickle.

He probably meant it. And then he saw that IU football actually somehow managed to get worse than the year that cost Bill Lynch his job.

EDIT: I guess what I'm saying is that no one has a problem when Eric Gordon does this, or when Jerimy Finch (albeit to a really weird extent) does this. But when Kiel does it, suddenly everyone is all "word is bond!"

I strongly suspect that is true of all programs everywhere. I remember illinois fans being angry about gordon. When you have a talented player back out, people who follow/support that program are going to be upset and feel betrayed. I am disapointed but not terribly surprised. Besides the mallory years, iu football has been very weak on winning and getting recruits the caliber of gunner just go elsewhere.

    You completely missed my point.

I don't care that he decommitted from IU, what bothers me is all the press this kid got for his decision being such a well thought out and not rushed into affair. Which was completely disproven with the LSU comittment and then reneging again.

And there's also the family tie at ND. Blair is his uncle, no? So I think that adds to the sort of rash/emotional decision changing angle. Again, particularly with all we heard about how meticulously and thoroughly he supposedly was in the first commitment.

Second one didn't bother me. I get it was inevitable. It's just getting a bit dramatic at this point. I don't wish him any ill will. It's just getting too soap operatic for me. Hope wherever he ends up works out for him.

And the initial hope that maybe someday IU would have a solid football team. Wouldn't have blamed him at all had he picked a different place to begin with. But picking IU and showing so much support and loyalty after the decision.. Then switching, it feels like all that hope was just thrown away and abandoned.

It's not Wilson's fault. Last years team wasn't even 1/3 his. It was still Lynch's team.. IU will improve under Wilson, but not near as much as it should have since the Kiel decision.

Christian Watford with a really soft start to this game. This kid really needs to figure it out, because if he did, he could be in the NBA conversation. Playing like this, he's not.
