I think the point is that Barlow is just slow mentally, which is true.

I don't think so. I think he's just disengaged from the whole process, because he doesn't fit very well with the team.

He doesn't know how to play without the ball in his hands. You could hear Painter yelling at him to move the entire game, but as someone who struggles with the same things, it's hard to move when you don't know where to move too. He sees the game with a completely different set of eyes, and he struggles because of it.

I bet that if Painter would put the ball in his hands, and just let him go to work, he would look a lot better, and a lot smarter.

I bet he really feels restricted, and when you have to stop and think about what you're doing, it's too late. It just compounds the problem.

It's really frustrating to watch, I do agree with that.

But his stat line is pretty good, considering he was barely in the game mentally.

4-7 shooting which was the best on the team for anyone who took more than one shot. 6 rebounds, which was second after Carroll's 9. 3 assists, which was top on the team. 11 points, which was second on the team, and only 1 TO that wasn't even a turnover but just a really bad call. (The defender knocked it away from Kelsey, who picked up the ball and started dribbling again. The ref called a double dribble, and even Gotlieb/Hubert Davis talked about how the call was wrong.)

4-7, 11pts, 6rebs, 3 assists, 0 TOs for a guy that was barely in the game is pretty good.

I think Barlow at the point would be an interesting change of pace if they need a quick scoring burst against a smaller guard, but I just don't see him creating the long term movement needed in Purdue's offense by always making the correct pass.

...someone's still hurt about that "choke" sign...

Anyway, you can't play Barlow at the point since LewJack is our second-best player, and you're not going to run him out there at the 2 or 3, obviously....

You can think whatever you like, but I didn't like Barlow when he was in high school and would have the exact same criticisms of him then that I do now.

I'm not familiar with the choke sign, but I thought that was a fairly common criticism of Barlow--mentally, he's just not there.

It is weird though, I have heard he is actually a pretty smart kid. I think he is fluent in Italian and French or something like that. I personally love KB, but he definitely has GDB moments.

Oh, and this is a pretty good article on Raphael Davis. I didn't know La Lu was that tiny and distant. Sounds like he is a smart kid, Princeton and Stanford recruited him a little. Can't wait til he gets here.

Barlow's not dumb, he's just...aloof. Which is even worse as a fan.

I'm getting pretty damn frustrated with the offense. I fully understand Travis Carroll and Sandi Marcius aren't about to be all conference, but they repeatedly establish good position on the block, Sandi especially, open up for the entry pass and they just get looked off time and time again. Give the damn kids a chance to at least prove you right. JaMychael Green's REALLY good, but that dude's not going to deter a little baby hook from 4 feet by Sandi. FEED THE DAMN POST!

Far as the "outcoached" thing, one, Anthony Grant is a GREAT young coach. Two, in the second half Bama pressed with two guys and it took a good 2/3 minutes (and a 10 second call) for Painter to even bring another ballhandler back off the inbounds. God forbid you bring a big like Lawson back to screen in the backcourt and see if you can break the press with LewJack and then hit a trailing Lawson filling the lane. Even if you can't turn it into a mini-break situation, you're not wasting 8 seconds of your shot clock for the majority of the 2nd half just getting the ball up the floor.

I don't know that I'd necessarily say Painter got "outcoached" but it wasn't his finest hour. Trust me, I was an 8th man in 3A my senior year, I know my hoops.

Nice Star article about central Indiana PGs, lot of focus on Ronnie Johnson and Yogi Ferrell. They're both stellar points, have grown up battling one another, likely 4 year players, and will probably be starters from the jump.

IU/Purdue's always immensely fun to watch regardless of where the programs are at, but these two going head to head for (hopefully) four years is going to be just outstanding. Both programs are legitimately lucky to have both.

Ronnie's going to show him how to be an actual point of course.

Please everyone, aren't we past the point where someone criticizes someone's basketball decision making/effort to extrapolating that into he must be stupid in all aspects of life? That's not what I said or was trying to imply.

I don't know why people like Jackson so much. I mean, I like him as a player, but I don't think he's you're 2nd best player. And even if he is, that really isn't a compliment considering how awful Purdue looks on the offensive end.

Does the offense really work with him running the point? I don't think so. They really, really struggled. And I know it was just one game, but their problems were the exact problems everyone knew they were going to have all season. I don't see them getting fixed anytime soon.

I agree. They have to establish some kind of post presence or you may just as well play Hummel at the 5 and run until the cows come home. The only reason Carroll starts is because he's the best offensive big, but he's terrified of shooting the ball. It was obvious that Painter must have lit into him at halftime of the Alabama game because he had an aggressive little stint there at the the start of the 2nd half.

I think the biggest problem is that this team has no identity and the individuals have yet to determine their own roles. Still, they're 4-1 and playing borderline top 25 ball, so I can't complain too much. I think we'll see a lot of growth over the course of the season, but I think that growth is going to have to come from team play rather than individual improvement. As individuals, I don't know that the players on this team are all that good - Hummel included (I love the guy, but let's face it, he's not #1 guy at the big-time D1 level). I do think, however, that we saw this team play a phenomenal stretch of defensive basketball at the end of the 1st half against Alabama. If they embrace that idea and identity, I think they can score enough to win a lot of games holding teams under 60.

The truly amazing thing to me is how terrible this team has been in transition, in finishing at the rim, and in free-throw shooting.

Have to wait until tomorrow to watch, but even if it was Western Michigan I'll take holding a team to 18% from the floor and 8 made shots the entire game. Held their big man leading scorer (19.5) scoreless.

    Hale's officially redshirted.

Huge penalty on Purdue gives IU life.

I really thought Joe Holland's knee brushed the end zone before he downed that ball at the IU 1.
