Default Lance Stephenson Working On Development Of Point Guard Skills

Lance Stephenson hopes to sign an overseas deal during the lockout, but is working on his game in Indianapolis regardless.

"The biggest thing with him is trying to improve his handles so he can become more of a true point guard," said Ed Schilling, who runs a basketball academy where Stephenson trains. "I think he can be a solid scoring guard, but in order for him to have more of an impact, I think it has to be as a point guard because his size (6-5, 210) and strength can allow him to be special there."

I really am curious to see how Lance and George Hill look together after they get a feel for one another's game. They truly compliment each other nicely, I think.

You never know til they hit the court together, but I don't see how Lance/Hill doesn't work. I'm really looking forward to it as much as anything.

His handles don't seem to be a problem at all to me, it's his approach to commanding an offense. If he's a "point guard" anyway. Really don't think he needs work on the floor anywhere near as much as he does in the film room.

How about this: one is a tall guard, one is a short guard; neither have the requisite point guard skills to run a professional basketball team for extended periods of time.

Can they both be effective PGs in the time that they do command the floor?

What does Darren Collison do as a point gaurd that Lance can't (if not right now, at least eventually)?

Tongue-in-cheek response? Defend another PG that is taller then 6'1"?

I think d2c s defense is underrated but lance is a better defender in my mind...his length will eventually make him an elite type if he gives the effort

I think CableKC meant the opposite.

    Anyway, nothing.

DC is slightly more experienced, but that can even up in 20 starts by Lance.

The rest is all character related.

I think Lance already has "more point guard skills" than Collision. However that doesn't always translate into being able to "run a team" as the point guard. A lot of players over the years had point guard skills, but they never played point guard.

Having said that, Lance has more than enough point guard skills to be able to learn to run a team.

If Lance wants to be the best he can be, he should focus on being a point guard - that is where he could be a really special NBA player

It is? How do you rate his defense? Rate it on a scale of 1-10.

If your rating has a numerical value, it's probably being overrated.

He can run and run a lot Lance would be gased after 10 minutes in a run in gun style. But with Vogel i see us playing at a slower tempo and not being asked to run and gun like JOB wanted.

I agree. Collison is great at pushing the tempo. That is why I think he would be a great backup PG. I think Vogel will still want us to push the tempo, but it will be in a much more opportunistic fashion.

That is true now but with proper conditioning Lance should be able to have Allen Iverson like minutes

He is 20 freakin years old man!
Sittin on top of the world!

I don't think that's quite fair. Last year, he got tired quickly, but he barely played at all. With a bit of conditioning, there's no reason why he couldn't play in a run and gun style. After all, Hibbert has Asthma and he can do it.

I've said enough on my views of Lance as a PG. So I won't go there, but don't think conditioning is the difference.

I would like to see Lance split time at point and shooting guard. I'm sure that's how they'll use GHill, and that's how they should use Lance.
Lance + Starting SG = Awesome

    Now really free Lance!

Lance would kill all his opponents if he can develop into a real PG. I just hope he stays in control. Other than that, he'll be fine for us. Well, hopefully more than just fine--I think he can be a huge star in the league.

Agreed, they seem like a perfect compliment in the backcourt. Hill can guard Points on defense, Lance the 2. Lance can have the ball in his hands on offense at the point, Hill can play the shooting guard with his range and ability to break down defenses. Really court vision and getting to where he wants on the court is Lance and scoring himself is Hill. The potential here is very exciting.

Lance has to be in top top notch shape with honestly I don't feel like he's ever been. I think he's in good shape for him relative to his history. I think he has to take defense personal and prioritize it. Otherwise, I'm not sure will get the court time to do the mustard things.

You can't expect him to be in top notch shape this year either. He hasn't experienced playing a full pro season. He hasn't experienced "hitting the rookie wall". From a conditioning standpoint he probably still doesn't understand what it'll take.
