Default Nate Davis says he'll be Colts backup quarterback

    http://www.indystar.com/article/2011...IndyStar.com|s

There's the article, but it doesn't say all that much, other than his contract is for two years.

I've been a fan of Nate's since the first time I found out who he was. I didn't know who he was really, just that he was some guy wearing sweatpants and untied new balance running shoes while playing basketball at the rec center. The next thing I know, he grabs a rebound and smashes it.

He's one of the most gifted athletic people I've ever played any sport against/with.

If it were purely an athletic competition, the Colts just got a lot stronger. But unfortunately football requires a bit of thinking, and that's where Nate falls short. If anyone has followed him at all, you'd probably know that he has a learning disability. I don't think it's "bad" but that combined with his less than stellar work ethic and you get a guy with all the tools in the world, maybe other than height (6'2"), that struggles with the mental aspects.

I can't think of a better player to learn under than Peyton though. If he even soaks up half of what Peyton is going to try and teach him, he'll make some significant progress, in my completely ignorant opinion on the situation.

Either way, Nate is a good guy. I sincerely doubt we'll ever see his name on the police blotter and he has the talent to be a pretty damn good QB if Peyton ever goes down. Hopefully that will never happen, but knowing Nate and the type of person he is, I'm really happy for him that he landed this opportunity.

I just really hope he shows more than Painter, because I really don't want to have to talk bad about him, or even hear it/read it.

I think if you give Nate 2 years on the Colts he would beat out Painter.

It would be shocking if any rookie could unseat Painter with so little prep time.

I really don't think they care. If Peyton does down they're screwed regardless.

I always hoped he'd be a backup here no seriously hopefully we'll just see him in preseason and leave it at that.

I think Painter is okay... just put a decent line around him... if our first team o=line is horrible just imagine what the 2nd team line was like.. most of his bad plays came because of broken line assignments...

I love all the Painter hate.

Nate is the more talented athlete but this isn't a position where talent wins out. Curtis knows the playbook and Davis has a learning disability and he has to learn one of the most complicated playbooks in the league. Ya I think its going to take 2 years.

And the playbook is so complicated because of the man who gets to make the decisions. No other QB in the league is able to run the system that Peyton runs. So who ever is the backup is going to be bad because of it.

It really doesn't matter if it's Painter, or Nate, or who ever. Sure, there's that 0.0001% chance that the Colts can land a Matt Cassell as a backup, but if/when Peyton ever goes down, the whole playbook is going to be revamped to fit who ever is taking snaps anyways.

Until the Colts invest in a replacement QB, who ever is the backup is going to catch a lot of heat, and the Colts are going to suck.

And Curtis can know the in's and out's of the playbook all he wants, but he has shown he can't execute it. In the end, performance is the only thing that matters.

I'm much rather have a phsyically talented QB, so you can tailor the playbook around the things he can do/understand, rather than tailor the playbook around a QB that can only run running plays, or that can only dump it off in the flats.

Well, that was fast. Word is that Nate got released. A shame really. I thought all 3 QBs looked pretty rough, but I thought Nate looked like the only one that could actually make a play when things went south.

Doesn't mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things for the Colts. Doesn't matter who's the backup if Peyton goes down really.

But it really sucks for Nate. He really is a good guy. I thought he should have stayed in school for his senior year, and it looks like he probably should have.

I really hope he lands somewhere else.

At this point you wonder why we even carry a backup QB on the roster. We have no interest in them being any good.

Be nice if it were to open up a roster spot for a guy like Brian Waters. Guy's a 5x Pro Bowler, recently as 2010. Just sitting out there, surely would be able to get him for the minimum. No clue why he's a FA unless he's got some injuries I don't know about.

Guess it could be a sign Peyton's coming back. Pretty sure when a guy's on the PUP he doesn't take up a roster spot.

Pretty sure he's ineligible for the PS, Mike Hartline might be a candidate though.
