When the Jets released DT Kris Jenkins last February, you had to wonder if Jenkins was near the end of his career.
Although Jenkins is a four-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro and is not that old (he’ll turn 32 next month), he’s had plenty of injury problems the past two season. After his second torn ACL in as many years ended his season last September, Jenkins has played only seven games combined the past two years.
That’s enough apparently to send him into retirement. He announced it today on his Facebook page.
The announcement is a bit of a surprise, considering the Redskins were interested in acquiring his services and because last October, Jenkins said he wanted to come back, explaining “I'm in uncharted waters. But I'm at the point where I don't care what anybody thinks. I want to leave my mark on the game.”
Now, he’s changed his mind. From Jenkins’ statement on Facebook:
"Wanted to let you all know that I have loved the support and respect that you all have given me throughout my career. But it is time for the torch to be passed to the younger players. I am going to hang up the cleats! The mind is always willing to play but my body deserves the rest. Thank you for the opportunities to play Carolina and New York."
