Well, thanks, but that doesn't answer my question.

This isn't gonna be a workstation or a gaming platform; I have a desktop for those. I want something to write with, wirelessly surf the web, and watch DVDs while on the plane. So graphics-wise, I just need DVD playback, and battery-wise, I need 3 hours. Anything else is gravy.

    I've got a line on a new (warrentied) 2.4GHz celeron laptop w/ DVD-ROM/CD-RW, 15" XGA, 256megs of RAM. It's a low-end laptop, sure, but it's also just $650.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

Well ****, I don't see doing much better than that.

I dunno, I went and saw it and didn't like it. It was a company called GQ, and it just didn't feel right. It said it had a year of service and support, but I dunno. If it was a desktop box, I wouldn't mind because I could swap out any part I didn't like. With a laptop, though, I'm leery. There's a solid (amd 2800-M) Compaq laptop for $800, and while Compaq used to be terrible they've supposedly come a long way in the past 2 years.

All right, another question for the experts. I'm an AMD man, and haven't built on Intel in at least 4 years. On laptops, though, Intel seems to be much more prevalent. Somebody help me understand the difference between Pentium4-M and Celeron.

I understand that the Pentium is the high-powered chip and the Celeron is the budget chip. What's the relative performance difference, though, between a Pentium4-M 1.5Ghz and a Celeron 2.4Ghz? Any advice would be great.
I wouldn't want a Celeron. Along with being the "budget" chip, they almost always use cheaper motherboards, use shared memory for video and slower bus speeds and they have half the cache.

The Intel Pentium-M is the way to go in a laptop. A Pentium-M 1.5 has the equivalent speed of a regular P4 2.6 with a lot less power used. A Pentium-M 1.5 will kick the crap out of a regular Celeron 2.4. There is also a new Celeron-M chip, it is better for laptops than the regular Celeron, but nothing has the battery life of a P-M.

The laptops you see that say Centrino have a Pentium-M, Intel 855 chipset on the MB and a Intel PRO/Wireless Mini PCI card. They must have all 3 to be called a Centrino.

Yeah, I figured they had to be measuring the clock speeds differently between the Celeron and the P-M.

How does the P-M stack against the Athlon XP-M?

I don't know about P-M, but my sister has an Athlon-M. It runs pretty fast, but it gets pretty hot. I've known hotter laptops, but I thought one of the things with an M processor was it was supposed to stay somewhat cool.
