Default Wells: Vogel must change his staff and hire 3 assistants

Frank Vogel, the leader for the Pacers head coaching job, has to change his staff and hire 3 assistant coaches, according to sources.

Former head coach Terry Porter and Minnesota assistant John-Blair Bickerstaff are candidates Vogel's interested in, according to sources

Former Lakers assistant Frank Hamblen, who is from Terre Haute, is also a possibility, according to the LA Times.

I doubt Porter will come here but i like those guys as assist choices if they want to come to Indy.

Wells said he'd have to bring in 3 new assistants, that's almost a whole new staff isn't it? I assume Burke'd be the only guy to stay.

Wow. If Vogel can land Hamlen, that would make me feel a lot better about our coaching staff.

Larry is not coming back, he didn't have a meeting with Orlando for not reason, yeah he is coming back to the NBA but not to the Pacers, the notion that he is a taking a year off and then come back is absurd.

Well we had 6 assistants before Vogel got promoted(i think not 100% sure). It is a welcome change for me I would love to add a new staff I don't like a staff picked by JOB. If we land all of these guys I would be in full support of bringing Vogel back.

If Frank Hamblem can bring in some of the triangle offense, I think that will make better use of Hibbert's (and McRoberts' if doesn't leave) passing abilities.

so does this mean that Vogel is gonna be our head coach?? My thinking is this: why would the Pacers tell Vogel he needs to find new assistants and to be thinking about who he wants to be his assistants if they would wind up not even offering him the job?? Seems like the decision has been made to offer him the job. And that leads to this other thinking of mine: If he's been offered the job and been told to find new assistants, and he already has several specific names in mind, then I would assume he's going to take the job (I wouldn't think he'd turn it down anyway)??

    We had 5 including Vogel.

The others being Burke, DeFruscio, Potapenko, and McCarty.

Porter would make a great lead assistant. If it were Bernie Bickerstaff instead of JB I'd be more excited, but whatever. My irrational hatred of Phil Jackson makes me unable to properly evaluate Hamblen. I would bet, however, that it's just the LA Times throwing something out there as a possibility, nothing more.

My question is, is this the same source from a week ago that said Vogel had to change his assistants? Is it new that he has to change 3, or is it Wells just dooling out what little he knows since this is taking so long?

    Not bad options.

I like Terry Porter, but I read that he would like to be Portland's new GM.

I want us to add a former head coach like Eddie Jordan or Terry Porter as mentioned.

JB Bickerstaff seems alright, but I'd rather bring in his father who is currently with Portland.

    Hamblen would be great.

I think Vogel will definitely keep Burke just because he's been with this organization for years and acts as a defensive coach. He's probably DeFruscio too, but will get rid of Potapenko and McCarty and bring in 3 new guys.

yea that seems right...i mean he can't very well hire the assistants, and then the Pacers brass tell the four of them tough s__t, we're hiring phil jackson

sucks for mccarthy and potapenko and the other guy, but good for vogel

Seems like more of a negotiation between Vogel & the Front Office vs an interview process.

According to Mike Wells, Vogel was told about hiring new assistant coaches if he gets the job, today during a meeting with Larry Bird.

To me it kind of sounds like if Vogel can convince some good experienced assistant coaches to come here it is his job, but he first has to find some guys who will be willing to be part of his staff.

    Honestly,

I think he should. if Vogel gets the job we need STRONG assitant coaches

Edit: Interesting that Bird let OBIE hand pick his assistants in a contract year, which I think seemed obvious that OBIE was getting those he knew would be little threat to replace him

That wont fly again if Vogel is the coach

Not necessarily. I think it's a reasonable interview question to ask "Who would you want to be your assistants? Why?". Especially since he hasn't been a head coach before (not counting the interim period). I'd want to know what skills he expected from each assistant and who he thought might bring those skills.

Then the next question is, would those people be interested in being assistants to Frank Vogel, a guy without a lot of head coaching experience. The Pacers may be letting him feel them out (without making offers) to see if he has the ability to assemble a quality staff.

    Good point.

I remember making the comment early in the year about it would be hard to fire JOB given lousy Assistant Coach choices. Truth be told, we just got lucky with Vogel.

I think that no matter who the head coach is you want to have quality assistant coaches.

I hope that at least one of the assistant coaches (regardless of who Bird hires as the head coach) is a previous head coach or a already top assistant coach (like Mike Brown was when he joined Rick's staff in Indiana).

I would be thrilled if the Pacers brought in Hamblen to put in the Triangle in place.

Then all we need is Pippen, Kobe, Jordan and someone to rebound and then we got something!!!!!

I was kind of hoping we hired Hubie Brown for a couple of years, with the idea of Vogel staying on and tutoring him for the job.

It wasn't something I thought was realistic, but I was hoping it would happen.
