Ginobili says he played with broken arm in playoffs

Manu Ginobili missed Game 1 of the San Antonio Spurs first round series against the Memphis Grizzlies with what was described as a sprained elbow (suffered in the last game of the season). When he returned he put up 20.6 points per game of 44.3 percent shooting, numbers very close to his regular season production.

And he may have done it all with broken arm.

That is what he told a paper in his native Argentina, according to the Express-News’ Spurs blog.

Ginobili told the Argentine website Noticiasmdq.com that he sustained asmall fracture of the right humerus, the long bone in the arm that runs from the shoulder to the elbow. The injury occurred in the final game of the regular season on April 13 when he was trapped in a collision between Tim Duncan and Phoenix’s Grant Hill….

Here’s what he told Argentine reporters (translation provided by ProjectSpurs.com).

“Last Wednesday, the medical staff of San Antonio I had the last MRI,” Ginobili said. “The liquid has been absorbed and small fracture in the humerus is welded at 85 percent. I have to be doing nothing for 3 weeks and then begin slowly.”
Ginobili took some grief after missing Game 1 from some quarters of Spurs nation, which was silly at the time considering all that Ginobili has played through (and done for the team in the past). He’s tough, to question that was shortsighted at best.

If he played through a broken arm, those people need to find a nice sized crow sandwich for lunch.

Tons of respect for Manu. I don't think casual NBA fans understand how good Manu is.

Any player that can take down a flying bat during a NBA game has some cojones in my book.

And if he told you he took down the bat with a broken arm, you'd have no doubt. He's a legend.
There are two types of quarterbacks in the league: Those whom over time, the league figures out ... and those who figure out the league.

I'm actually still disappointed that he didn't bite the head off the bat.

    Haha I love this thread.
Too bad this had to happen this year. Might have screwed up the final stand of Duncan era Spurs. Healthy Grizzlies probably still take out healthy Spurs, but we'll never know for sure.

It would be ironic if he broke it due to hitting the floor after a flop.

Tony Parker recently said that San Antonio's chance at a championship is over. This can't go over well with the team. Any interest in trying to get him to Indy?

I'd rather hope DC continues to improve than pay Parker $50 mil over 4 years. He's got a lot of bball miles.

I think you all are over rating this achievement by Manu. Okay so he played with a small fracture. Its not like his arm's mobility was affected. It just hurt alot. Twenty years from now people will look back at this story and say that Manu played with a dangling arm.

    1) No one's saying playing with a broken arm makes him the best player ever. It just makes an already great player more likable for being tough.

    2) No one's going to look back at this story in 20 years.

    3) You try playing with a broken arm.

Go play with a small fracture in your arm. Just go shoot around with it. Then try playing defense, or attacking the basket knowing you are going to take contact. Oh and then do this on the NBA Playoffs level.

Can't help but be reminded of the "a concussion is just a bad headache" comment that was made a few years ago.

You see I can replace it with any mildly painful injury and its sounds the same.

I have played in the past with shin splints on a regular basis, competitively at that. It feels like somebody is stabbing you with a knife every step. The only bone injury I have had is a fractured wrist. It hurt, but I couldn't even move it. When somebody says they played with a mild fracture in their arm I'd tend to think it wasn't that bad, because if it was they wouldn't be playing anyways. Pain is a very manageable thing. Mind over matter in many instances.

True Story, i have a good friend who back in our college days broke both his ankles with in a 3 month span. He broke the first one playing basketball, and started playing again with in a week. He really loved playing basketball. He would just favor his good leg heavily and jump off the good leg and land on the one good leg. That is until he jumped and broke that ankle too. He put so much pressure on the good ankle that it just gave way and broke worse than the previous one. He finally went to the doctor got put on crutches for about 3-4 months.

I have before. When I was a teen, I fell on it while playing and got a hairline fracture. I was out there the next day playing with it in a sling. In fact, since it was my shooting arm, I learned to shoot with my off-hand. I'm not as proficient with it, but I can do okay.

I've also played for several hours on the ice, during winter, before.

    I love basketball.

Shin splints suck massively tumorized donkey balls, but a bone fracture is still worse. Especially in a contact sport.
