Exclamation Wolves GM David Kahn Implies the Draft Lottery is Rigged

I figured it may be interesting enough to warrant its own thread rather than being placed in the lottery discussion thread...

Cleveland Cavaliers win NBA lottery, No. 1 pick; Minnesota Timberwolves get No. 2 pick - ESPN

Wolves general manager David Kahn said he knew Minnesota was "dead" when it got down to the final three of himself, Utah executive Kevin O'Connor and Nick Gilbert.

"This league has a habit, and I am just going to say habit, of producing some pretty incredible story lines," Kahn said. "Last year it was Abe Pollin's widow and this year it was a 14-year-old boy and the only thing we have in common is we have both been bar mitzvahed. We were done. I told Kevin: 'We're toast.' This is not happening for us and I was right."

I don't know what Kahn's so upset about, it's not like the draft class has the next superstar in it.

You are still going to get Derrick Williams, which is the best player to come out of this draft, imo.

It's not like the Wolves needed Irving anyways.

Geez it's not like the league asked Dan Gilbert to bring his 14 year old son to sit in for the draft. Maybe Kahn should be smart and bring some kid to sit in for him next draft lottery.

Kahn should get some cheese with his whine. Talk about sour grapes.

I agree with him that the lottery is one of the fishiest sports events of the year, but as an NBA team executive he just cannot say things like this. It's embarrassing and brings undue drama and pressure to his club.

Yup, but I sure do love it when those associated with the NBA speak out about this **** that goes on in the NBA.

Kahn's had 3 top 6 picks, Al Jefferson, and took on a former #2 overall for peanuts, and now a #2 of his own, all in his short time there. Nothing's rigged. You're just bad at your job.

He's probably right. I mean who honestly didn't have some kind of inclining that Cleveland was going to get the #1 pick? The NBA goes out of its way to show all the security measures taken to make sure the results are safe, but what does taht really mean anyway? That the rigged result is safe?

Cleveland had two picks in the top eight. That's not a conspiracy, that's good odds.

The Wolves have had every chance in the draft and they've shot themselves in the foot at every turn outside of the Love trade.

    Then again.

We did have the infamous "Derrick Rose to Chicago" thing a few years ago.

Was it rigged? Who knows. But it sure does seem like it.

It isn't like there was an envelope in the lotto basket that had a bent corner, or had been put in a freezer so it was cold to the touch.

    On the other hand -
Chicago raised MVP Rose goes 1st overall to who? Chicago.
Akron raised perennial all-star James goes 1st overall to who? Cleveland.

EDIT: Oops. I now see Sandman beat me too it.

You just don't get it. Stern hates the Indiana Pacers because we're a small-market team. This is why he helps Milwaukee and Cleveland instead.

Not exactly going out on a limb here, but the Pacers will never move up, let alone win, a lottery as long as Stern is around. Hopefully, they aren't in the lottery during the remainder of his dictatorship. As others have said, there's no need for the NBA to rig the lottery every year--Irving isn't a once in a lifetime talent--but if you don't think they sway it a bit when a LeBron, Rose, or Ewing are there, you're pretty naive. Oh, and I have a nice Rolex to sell you. I found it at the flea market, but it's good, I promise. Certified by the finest hand-picked appraiser.

It's a well-known fact that Stern hates Indiana.
