Has Mack signed with an agent? I don't think Bird can officially comment on him until he does that.

I couldn't hear but it sounded like they asked him about two different players, who I'm assuming are current NBA players.
I asked Mike who was brought up at that moment.

Anyone else get the vibe Bird likes Vogel because he can step in an have a more hands on approach if needed and Vogel probably wouldn't fight that as much as a more established coach? Vogel acts as more of the "pick me up" guy and encourages and then Bird can step in and drop the fire and brim stone if necessary. That's my theory.
I actually think it's just the opposite. I don't think Bird has any desire to have to step in and put pressure on the team in any way. I think he's uncomfortable with Vogel because he feels like he'd have to if Frank was the head coach.

I know the players I'd like to get, I want to have the best bench in the league. ... (Mentioned drafting best player available) Want to get our bench to a level where (paraphrasing from here on) you don't lose anything when your starters sit"
This comment scares me a little. What this team needs is more top end talent. We're never getting out of the 1st round unless we get at least one more player who's at or above Granger's talent level. If Bird plans on building the bench by bringing new starters and pushing some current starters to the bench, then I'm all for it. However, you could read this comment as "If I can grab Mayo as a good bench scorer, re-sign McRoberts, and add a quality big to back-up Roy, we could really do some things." All that is is a formula for a more expensive 1st round exit and a few 45 win seasons.

Barring a miraculous turnaround, Brandon is 100% gone. I wonder if his feelings on Brandon tie to having guys that goof around and don't take practice seriously. I could see that as a possibility.
    Did he say that?
I did not hear Brandon brought up, but I missed the beginning.

He said our financial situation looks good this year, and then he said that James and Brandon come off the books next year. We don't have the intent to keep him with that comment.

Mack or Howard at 15 is a reach. But who knows what will happen at workouts.

Q: Trade more likely than waiting for FA?

"No, right now, talking to a few teams, seems like more activity now before draft then ever has been, wouldn't be surprised to see trades around the league, if we can do something now, I'm all for it. July 1st is when our guys come off, cap comes down, day of lockout, so I do believe if we can do something now, it's even better for us."
Wait, can you trade an expiring contract right now? Can Dunleavy/Ford/Solo etc. still be used in a trade then, if he's not off the cap? I don't think thats right.

However, it also doesn't seem right you have to count them on your cap, but you can't move them either... Can anyone clarify?

Don't know. Seems to me like the ONLY effective counter to the "pile on the superstar starters" strategy is to "pile on the high-quality bench". Get to the point where your bench can roll over whatever group of minimum-salary role players the loaded team has, and you have a hope of being effective with a bunch of one-dimensional defensive specialist starters.

You could argue that you get a high quality bench and develop "stars" from within.

Puts alot of emphasis on Paul George and Roy Hibbert (DC and Tyler to a lesser extent), but its something to consider, depending on what the options are as far as "super star" goes. I don't see it, but who knows.

Yup. We don't have cap space yet because those guys are still on the books. We can't trade the expiring contracts either though because it's past the trading deadline.

We can still trade Danny, Posey, Dahntay, and the guys on rookie deals. I'd guess we're offering up Posey + Rush maybe for someone else's expensive player.

Two things. Our bench is already one of the best in the league. How many times this season did the bench come in and save the starters asses this season? Also, having a bunch of players with equal talent can cause problems. Guys who could easily argue that they deserve to start could create a problem.

We have a ton of room to improve our starters without adding superstars. It sounds to me like Bird plans on helping the bench via the draft and to get starters via free agency or a trade.

I get the feeling we might hold until the trade deadline or next season unless something good comes up. It sounds like the goal this season is to make this an attractive place to come for free agents as possible.

If we draft Howard at 15 i might quit watching the Pacers.

I have heard that the Bulls are shopping 28 and 30 trying to trade up in the draft.

    What does that even mean?

Meaning could we go over the luxury tax if necessary?

There were a lot of times this year i was shouting to put *insert bench players name here* in, because a lot of times the bench outplays the starters on our team. Or at least brings in a spark that wakes up the starters. Its a nice luxary to have, though our starters do need some improvement.

they have always been willing to spend up to the tax soo that wont change. They were willing to go over if it means we are title contenders during the Reggie era we went over the tax.

I agree that we have plenty of very high quality bench talent and that we need better starters.

Either our starters improve and we give them veteran or otherwise talented support off the bench, or we leap frog our current starters with superior talent.

    I'm hoping for/expecting a little of both.
