After mentioning again that he likes a "tight lockeroom", "things went on all year, not just with Frank, that I'd like to see cleaned up"

"You still have to go out and get the right players to fit this team. You can get a big name player, but if they don't fit, you're just wasting your money. I know the players I'd like to get, I want to have the best bench in the league. ... (Mentioned drafting best player available) Want to get our bench to a level where (paraphrasing from here on) you don't lose anything when your starters sit"

Anyone else get the vibe Bird likes Vogel because he can step in an have a more hands on approach if needed and Vogel probably wouldn't fight that as much as a more established coach? Vogel acts as more of the "pick me up" guy and encourages and then Bird can step in and drop the fire and brim stone if necessary. That's my theory.

Talking about the staff at (I think) PS&E and/or ConsecoFH, and it sounds like he'd like to retain everyone, but seems to be hinting there will be people let go (though he didn't say that).

Q: Trade more likely than waiting for FA?

"No, right now, talking to a few teams, seems like more activity now before draft then ever has been, wouldn't be surprised to see trades around the league, if we can do something now, I'm all for it. July 1st is when our guys come off, cap comes down, day of lockout, so I do believe if we can do something now, it's even better for us."

"Can't talk about that, but he's a fine player; I like him." "I like him. Good kid. Plays hard." (smiling)

I think they asked him about Mack. re the above.

    ..

    "I don't think it's a very strong draft."

"I liked Zeller, he went back to school. Damn."

"Our guys left here in a good frame of mind."

"At 15, we'll get a player that can help us. And second round"

"Happy that kids went back to get their education, but not (top draft)"

Thinks next year's draft will be strong.

I'd be surprised if we keep our first round pick.

On what looks for in a coach:

Communication, what I think coach gets out of players each game and practice, Jimmy did great job of changing the culture, had great practices, comm. at end with players was good, Jimmy got them to work hard in practice,"

Bird is a huge believer in having tough practices. if you read his book he wrote back in 2000, that is one thing I vividly remember tough practices and being on time.

    I couldn't hear who they're talking about.
Adelman, though I didn't remember we interviewed him last time around.

I wasn't trying to be funny, is actually a serious prediction.
Wells did not ask about Lance.

After the interview ends, Bird walks up to Wells and says "way to get off course, Mike".

Also, I think we might wait til the trade deadline to really go for broke. Let the smoke settle from the lockout a bit, we'd still have our trade bait (Brandon, Posey, our young pieces). I could see us using a little cap space to sure up the bench. Make a big move at the trade deadline then look toward the 2012-2013 season as the year we really go for it all. Next year's goal would be a second round appearance.

Yup it was Adelman, Bird also described him as an easygoing guy. Guess we're not calling him

Bird with his customary potshot at Wells. "I gave you 10 questions to ask me Mike, and you did really good on the first ones, but now you're going way off course" - referring to the Adelman question, I think.

In the first part of your first quote they must have been asking him about an existing NBA player - no reason not to be able to talk about a draft pick but can't talk about players on other teams.

Adelman. He was talking about the job he did in Houston with all the injuries.

Barring a miraculous turnaround, Brandon is 100% gone. I wonder if his feelings on Brandon tie to having guys that goof around and don't take practice seriously. I could see that as a possibility.

I couldn't hear but it sounded like they asked him about two different players, who I'm assuming are current NBA players.
