Thread: Rudy Gay available

    Default Rudy Gay available

There is a "belief around the league" that Rudy Gay is available via trade for the right price, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Gay, whose season ended due to shoulder surgery, is owed $68 million over the next four years. The Grizzlies' success without him this postseason, coupled with their need to pay Marc Gasol as a restricted FA, could prompt them to unload Gay this summer.

There has been quite a few articles suggesting the Granger for Gay deal if the Grizzlies decide to deal him.

I don't know how I feel about that. I like Granger. He's stuck behind the Pacers through all the downs, and I would hate to see him dealt when things are finally on the upswing.

Not sure this deal is one I move Granger for. Intriguing though

I'd offer George+2 first rd picks for him. Gay had played the SG spot earlier in his career so I believe we can put him next to Danny.
Why add Gay? He covers many of our holes. He creates his shot off the dribble. He's a consistent scorer. He can help close out games for us, and even take the last shot. He's still improving as well.
I've said it many times, if we manage to add Gay next to Granger, and also get a guy like Landry or Nene through free agency, we're contenders. But I doubt Memphis takes this deal.

I was thinking the same, but God I really don't want to give up George. The only other option is to give up Granger though more than likely.

The good side would be passing up George's development time, and getting a player nearly as good as I hope for him to be, immediately. The bad would be all the salary we'll be taking on. Without giving up much we're eating up a load of our cap space. If the salary cap is 50 million after the CBA, we'd be right at it just by dropping George and adding Gay. Without future picks, what you see is what you get, for the most part now. Is that really how you want this team to look for the next 5 years? What's their ceiling?

I think I just talked myself out of it.

Absolutely not. George will be better than Gay when all is said and done.

    Not paul george.

Not on his coming 2nd year that we might see him develop his offense and be a first class defender.

    Maybe, but does it matter?
It's not like the team is going to be on hold until George reaches his maximum potential. Granger will get older. Tyler and Roy might not even be here.
This means, if George turns into a good player, we might have success. If he doesn't, we're still that "8 at best" team.

Offer them Posey, Rush, and a bunch of 1sts and hope for the best. When they say no, on to the next team

Ok, and Gay is already better than Granger so it's an easy choice. Find a way to make Granger for Gay work. Salary wise it will require some creativity, whereas trading George for Gay would require a mathematical genius.

Granger still has plenty of good years left in him.

If we really want to trade Granger for Gay, we can simply absorb the difference in salary. We're well below the cap.

I'm glad that you're not our GM.

IE: 3 1st round picks for him. Way too much. And FWTFIW, I wouldn't trade George. He has Gay potential. Uh, wait - that doesn't sound right. He has the potential to be Gay. No - not that either. He has the potential to be as good as Rudy.

I've said this before, the guy I compare Paul to most is Rudy Gay.

I've really liked Rudy's game and I'd trade Danny and picks to get him and not look back.

As for now a lineup of Granger/Gay seems more intriguing than a Gay/George lineup. I wouldn't trade Paul because the second lineup is gonna be a lot better than the first one in 2-3 years.

I agree. That would be really overpaying.

As for those who say they would hate to do this to Granger just when things are starting to improve, well....It isn't like he would be going to a bad team. Memphis is getting to be VERY good.

I think Memphis would benefit more from getting Danny than we do and we'd probably benefit from having Rudy more than Memphis does.

My off-season "dream" would to move Granger & Posey for P.Gasol, then use a combonation of t/y's '11 1'st, '13 1'st, a S&T'd McBob &/or maybe even the rights to Stanko to land Gay & Mayo. That would give you a top 7 of:
    Hibbert/Gasol/Gay/George/DC, w/ Hans & Mayo leading a 2nd unit.

Don't want to move PG along already. Granger? I think Gay is better than Granger all-around, but I'm not sure he's that much better, and his contract is heftier, too, I believe. Anyway, I like Granger for Gay much better than moving PG, but I don't find it to be a no brainer.

Gay is better than Danny already and he is 25, by the time Paul George gets into his prime Danny Granger would be like 32 and in the downside of his career, I think it makes sence to trade Danny for Gay so we could have a pair of young all star players in Gay and George in their prime.

I'm still waiting on a convincing argument for that claim. Apparently, lesser production and more losing equates to being "better" in some people's world.

As for trading George for Gay, I'm torn. It's well within reason that George could surpass the overrated Gay in due time, however, there's also the very real possibility that he never lives up to his potential and becomes nothing more than a role player.

If all things were equal, I'd probably play it safe with Rudy, but they're not. Trading for Gay would likely take a huge chunk out of our cap space. I'd just assume use that cap space to sign, say, Wilson Chandler (who's nearly as productive and younger than Gay), while keeping George.
