Default 2011 NBA Playoffs: (4) Oklahoma City vs. (8) Memphis

This series should be better than people think. Memphis is a very unique team, and they have a slew of tough defenders to throw at Durant and Westbrook.

    Prediction: OKC in 7

I think both teams match up pretty evenly but, in the end, OKC has more talent.

    Thunder in 7.

The Grizz won the season series 3-1. That said, I'm not betting against the Thunder. Thunder is 6

As DC mentioned in another thread, it's cool that one of these teams will be in the WCF's. Times are definitely a changin.

Grizzlies will give them all they have, but the home court ultimately leads OKC to prevail in game 7.

Two fun squads to watch, IMO. Think it will be a very competitive series. Hard to imagine the 8 seed pulling another upset to get to the WCF.

What the heck, I'll take Memphis in six.

I'll take OKC, Memphis, or, hell, even Dallas. Anyone but the Lakers.

Thank you! I want the Thunder to win it all at this point any way, but I definitely don't want the Grizz to win because I don't think they could stop the Lakers like OKC could.

The Grizzlies are at a huge disadvantage in game #1, having less than 40 hours between an extremely emotional win and this game, is almost impossible. And I am a big believer in whoever wins game #1 wins the series - if the teams are close to even

Scheduling losses happen in the playoffs. The Grizzlies could have avoided this by closing out Game 5 when they had the chance.

I like the Thunder in 6. They've got more options than San Antonio to slow down Randolph & Gasol (look for Nick Collison to have a big role in this series). The Westbrook - Conley matchup shoud be interesting. But I like Durant as a closer over Randolph.

I know this may sound crazy but I've been thinking for a while. Is Westbrook more important to the Thunder than Kevin Durant?

Yes. But that can be in a negative way also. I think Westbrook is a better barometer if you want to look to one player to determine if OKC will win or not. When Westbrook plays well, plays the right way the Thunder win, when he doesn't they lose

Westbrook is important just for the fact that he's the only decent passer in the starting lineup. If he forgets to pass... that obviously hurts the team over the course of a game.

That said, OKC wins / losses correlate with Durant's stats more than with Westbrook's:

    Durant
    in wins: .489 FG%, .393 3P%, 9.3 FT attempts, 29.1 PPG, 2.9 AST, 2.6 TO
    in losses: .412 FG%, .271 3P%, 7.4 FT attempts, 24.8 PPG, 2.4 AST, 3.2 TO

    Westbrook
    in wins: .457 FG%, .397 3P%, 8.0 FT attempts, 29.1 PPG, 8.6 AST, 3.9 TO
    in losses: .410 FG%, .200 3P%, 7.1 FT attempts, 24.8 PPG, 7.3 AST, 3.7 TO

We can go into egg-chicken on this. As in, there are times when Westbrook can cause Durant's bad games with bad passing. Other times though, Durant shooting bad can cause Westbrook to force things.

In the end I think they need one more passer at the 2. Harden seems to be becoming that guy.
But this team will always live and die with Durant. Wesbrook or their D can pull them out once in a while. But Durant is their only real floor spreader. Ibaka, Perkins, Westbrook, Thabo can't really shoot. If Durant isn't shooting well, OKC has little chance against a great team. Penetration can only get you so far.

Put another way, Westbrook's higher variability in play may make his level of performance more strongly correlated with the team's winning percentage. However, it doesn't prove him more important to the team's success.

Sonics fans have to be sick to their stomach at the thought that this team will be contending for the Finals year after year for a looooooong time.
