Former Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt hired to help school start football program
Zoom Former Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt. / MATT KRYGER / The StarMike Vanderjagt was called a lot of things during his eventful eight-year career with the Indianapolis Colts. Now, they're calling him "coach" at Marco Island (Fla.) Academy. The veteran place-kicker has been hired to develop the school's new football program.
Vanderjagt, who owns Vandy's 5 Brothers Restaurant on Marco Island, has worked with area youngsters in football, basketball and soccer.
"Basically, coaching at this age is like an artist's version of a blank canvas," Vanderjagt told the Marco Eagle newspaper. "You can kind of mold them to be a good player because they have no preconceived notions in general about sports."
Vanderjagt, 41, is the Colts' career leader in points (995), but he might be best remembered for initiating a verbal skirmish with quarterback Peyton Manning as well as his errant 46-yard field goal attempt with 17 seconds remaining in the Colts' 21-18 loss to Pittsburgh in the 2005 playoffs.
