Default An Open Letter to the Front Office

Dear Larry Bird, Mel Simon, David Morway,

Year after year I have renewed my season tickets, filled with blind optimism every opening night only to get let down by bad play, brawls, wasted draft picks, injuries, empty seats and bad coaching. The list goes on.

This year felt different. Many different factors could come into play. Maybe the acquisition of Darren Collison. The draft pick in Paul George. Roy Hibbert taking on a leadership position. Letting Frank Vogel take over the head coaching duties. Tyler Hansbrough breaking out into a player that closely resembles his college intensity.

Regardless, thank you Pacers for finally returning the favor. That three-year plan worked, didn't it!? Let's make year four even more memorable.

Good luck in the Playoffs. I'll be cheering loud and proud...as always.

    -Tony

    Side note about Herb.

He stayed and watched the Bobcats overtime game on the jumbotron with the rest of us.

You guys up in area 55 were superb during that time frame btw. I almost expected an MVP chant to break out when Dwight threw that hammer of a dunk down.

    Dear Pacers FO,

As a Pacers fan outside of Indiana, I just want to say how proud I am to say I'm an Indiana Pacers fan here.

You turned this what was once a dirty, passionless team and turned it into a real Indiana basketball team again.

The future looks incredibly bright and making the playoffs is something we all needed again.

I'm looking forward to seeing a pumped up, excited Conseco Fieldhouse crowd for many more years to come.

Thanks so much for all you've done for the Pacers organization.

Also, I'm sure Mel is looking down right now and is nothing, but a proud owner to see how much this long rebuilding process was well worth the wait.

    GO PACERS!

Thanks for bringing back the Indy pride.

Loved watching that Bobcats game in the field house. It was therapeutic.

I couldn't leave. There was no way I was walking out of there knowing that Grady might announce that the Pacers were going to the playoffs.

Diamond Dave took off when the Magic were up 10 to head to the gift shop but I could not bring myself to do it. I had to be there.

Although I only recognized Roaming Gnome, it was cool and even quite touching watching you guys stay to watch the Bobcats game. I think Austin Croshere said there were a couple hundred fans that stayed. I was thinking what would've been even cooler is if a few players come back out to celebrate with you guys. That would've been awesome!!

    Dear Powers That Be,

When I told my ticket rep(s) for the Xth time that I wasn't interested in renewing until the coach was dumped because I'd had enough of the kids being ignored and under developed I didn't dare dream that someone would finally take me up on it.

You dumped him and I handed over a nice chunk of change about 18 hours later.

See how easy that was. And you still made the playoffs (or did so because of this).

    Dear Duke,

You wouldn't hold out on buying tickets to get them to change so someone else had to.

    You're welcome.

    - Nap

Same here. More folks would have stayed if they had announced it sooner that they would show the end of the Bobcats game, I'm sure, but the way it was going, it could have ended at just about the same time as our game did.

I didn't see Herb out there watching the game on the jumbotron or I would have attempted what likely would have been another unsuccessful approach at obtaining his autograph!

I'm stoked that the Pacers made the playoffs. Thrilled. Can't understand why more Indy residents don't care. It's awesome. Fantastic. Makes my questioning of Bird's three-year plan look REALLY dumb.

All that said? If the Eastern Conference isn't a complete trainwreck, we're not having this conversation. This is a young team, a promising team, a team with a future. A team I want to watch play every night. A team I care about. A relevant NBA team again. But it is a playoff team in name only.

Point being, let's not get too excited for this postseason. Bird has made good on his promise -- and that's HUGE -- but the Pacers are damn lucky to be in the Eastern Conference, and damn lucky that the Bobcats and Bucks completely botched the home stretch.
