If people truly knew what was going on here, they'd side with the players. Nobody would put up with their own employer trying to do to them what the owners are trying to do to these players. I'm not saying it's a simple issue.
My employer changes my benefits every year. Usually increasing the amount I pay for them slightly, and every few years changes the benefits entirely. The difference is that my company is publicly traded and therefore has to release fully audited financial statements for ANYONE to see. If I want to know why they increased my share of the cost of the benefit package, I can read the annual report and see the reasons why. The NFL players are asking for the same thing, and the NFL owners don't want to give it up, because they know that once any sane individual sees the financials, they will not be able to justify what they are asking for.
