NEWARK, N.J. -- Here, then, Ohio State fans is your silver lining: Jared Sullinger says he is coming back.

[+] Enlarge AP Photo/Bill KostrounJared Sullinger vowed after Ohio State's loss to return for his sophomore season.

Sitting in the Ohio State locker room following the top-seeded Buckeyes' 62-60 loss to Kentucky, the freshman said he would not be entering his name for the NBA draft and would return for his sophomore season.

"I'm going to be an Ohio State Buckeye next year," he said. "This isn't why I came here, to come in here and see my seniors in here crying. I came here to win a national championship."

Plenty of people make pledges in the rubble of an emotional loss only to change their mind later, when the sting and suddenness of the season fades and the promise of the NBA looms.

Sullinger, who had 21 points and 16 rebounds in his final game of the season, insists that won't happen.

"I'm a man of my word," Sullinger said. "I don't change my word and no one changes it for me. This is what I want."

Sullinger said he made the decision following the game, but coach Thad Matta said it's the message Sullinger has been sending to him all season.

"Oh he's been telling me that all along," Matta said. "And I believe it. He told me, draw me up a contract, whatever you need to do. I believe him when he says it."
Sullinger, who averaged 17.1 points and 10 rebounds, was the Big Ten freshman of the year.

It'll be interesting to see if this is an aberation or the beginning of a trend. A lot of people swear that guys aren't going to go pro due to the impending lockout, I just don't know if that'll be the case.

I'll believe it when the early entry deadline comes and his name is not on it. Although this time it has a little more validity due to the lockout.

I don't think he'll be a good pro anyways. Just my opinion. He might be solid, but I think he should enjoy college while he can, and improve/expand his game

An already extremely weak draft class just lost probably it's biggest name. This draft is going to be year 2000 bad.

    Uh, not even close.

This years draft class has far better players than 2000 did. This draft really isn't all that terrible. It's just that there's very few "superstars" if you will. There's quite a bit of talent in this draft, just nothing earth-shattering.

While I will agree it's one of the weaker in the past few years, it's not really that bad.

And on the original topic. I'll believe it when I see it. Players say this all the time.

Sure, that is what HE say's (now), but what is his AGENT () going to say about that?

Only reason to stay is the uncertainity of there even being a season n/y.

Griffin was ranked around 8th and he chose to stay. Still worked out for him, even after having the major injury his rookie year.

Yep. We've seen this before. A player comes off of a disappointing loss, gets caught up in his emotions and declares he's returning to school to find that elusive championship and end his school days at the top. We'll see if he still feels the same two-months from now.

I've been saying this since last summer. This will be a WEAK DRAFT b/c underclassmen won't enter the draft due to the pending lockout. They won't get NBA PT, they won't get paid, and they won't be playing anywhere unless they stay in college. They can't hone their skills playing on the playground or at the local YMCA, but they can play and hone their skills for the NBA in college. Few opportunities in Europe and those that are available will be taken by NBA players. Thus a weak draft.

Prime example of a player who came out early to take advantage of last years draft b4 the pending lockout was KY's Orton. Has he even played this year?

Trade the #15 pick for the 2011 draft is going to be WEAK.

I think they will come out because they can get drafted higher. Then they would next year. Plus they can go to Euro and play during the lockout.

Every underclassman says this after his team gets bounced from the tournament. They change their minds 80% of the time if they are projected lottery picks.

Sullinger could stick to his guns though. He's an Ohio kid through and through and his older brothers have gotten degrees from Ohio State. He might be the exception to the rule.

I disagree. If they work and hone their skills they have a better chance of getting drafted higher. Thus a bigger contract.

European teams only have so many roster spots open, so why do they want a 19/20 year old college player when they can get a NBA player with experience? Very few will be able to go to Europe.
