Default It returns: Anthem's "Annual" Magic Number Thread

    Should be interesting this year.

Indiana's currently sitting at the #8 spot... here's the current rankings (3-19-2011)

    Chicago (49-19)
    Boston (48-19)
    Miami (47-22)
    Orlando (44-26)
    Atlanta (39-30)
    Philadelphia (36-33)
    New York (35-33)
    Indiana (30-39)
    Charlotte (28-40)
    Milwaukee (27-41)
    Detroit (25-44)
    New Jersey (22-45)
    Toronto (19-49)
    Washington (16-51)
    Cleveland (13-54)

I think it's safe to say that we won't catch Chicago, Boston, Miami, Orlando,or Atlanta. And we won't be caught by New Jersey, Toronto, Washington, or Cleveland.

    Philadelphia (36-33) - 13 games left
    New York (35-33) - 14 games left
    Indiana (30-39) - 13 games left
    Charlotte (28-40) - 14 games left
    Milwaukee (27-41) - 14 games left
    Detroit (25-44) - 13 games left

Until the end of the season, I don't worry about tiebreakers. So in order for Indy to beat a team, they'll need to beat them outright. The assumption is that each team will win out, then from there we calculate the number of Pacers wins or other team's losses to let us get ahead of them.

Philly's highest possible win total is 49 games. The Pacers would have to win 50 games to catch them, thus our magic number to catch Philly for the #6 spot is 20 games. 20 Pacers wins or Philly losses would get us there. Without further ado, then:

    Philadelphia - 20
    New York - 20
    Indiana - X
    Charlotte - 13
    Milwaukee - 12
    Detroit - 9

    The race is on.

Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

A win would have been so nice for our position.

Philly lost to Portland, Charlotte lost to San Antonio, New York, Milwaukee, and Detroit didn't play. And of course we lost, so no help there.

Team - Magic Number (Games Left)
    Philadelphia - 19 (12)
    New York - 20 (14)
    Indiana - X (12)
    Charlotte - 12 (13)
    Milwaukee - 12 (14)
    Detroit - 9 (13)

For once, we have a Magic Number thread that we can actually make the Playoffs...instead of being eliminated from the Playoffs.

I'm teetering on the edge of "who gives a F" in either direction.

Having no time to look at many prospects I'm not that geeked about draft position one way or the other, and with the inconsistent play it's hard to buy in fully to some playoff run. I will say that nothing suggests a great draft class and without me seeing anything to suggest otherwise it's a pretty good year to "miss out" on the lottery for a shot at a token playoff cup of coffee.

Plus to be honest my main focus is just player development which we are getting, or at least Vogel is attempting to get it.

Having said that, here are the elimination numbers for the teams ahead of us (the point when they can no longer lose more games than the Pacers already have).

Pacers can still win 42 games.

    3 - Atlanta (40 wins already)
    7 - Philly (36 wins)
    8 - New York (35 wins)

    15 - Millwaukee
    15 - Charlotte

Oh what the heck...teams who have locked up the "Better" lottery spot.
    Pacers can lose 52 max

    Locked "ahead" of Pacers
    Cavs
    Minny

(each loss by team or win by Pacers reduces this extra special magic number of crapdom)
    2 - Wiz
    2 - Kings
    4 - Raps
    8 - Nets
    9 - Pistons
    10 - Clips
    12 - Kitties
    12 - Baby Does

I know people have dreams of New York lingering in range, but lets say Indy goes 8-3 down the stretch. That cuts the MN to 9. So NY would have to go 3-9 to finish out. Even if the Pacers go 11-0 (not happening) the Knicks would only need to go 7-5 to hold us off.

Too much ground to cover. You look back at 3-4 of the recent losses to bad teams and you see a real missed opportunity.

I seriously doubt the Pacers get to 42 wins, but they can still make the playoffs by atleast going over .500 the rest of the way (7-5 effective yesterday) and beating both the Bobcats and the Bucks. If they do those three things, they'll make the playoffs.

I'll go on record right now, if the Bucks lose to the Kings tonight (they trail by 4 late in the 3rd) the Pacers are in the playoffs, the race is over

I don't know, we've won 5 of the 6 games you said we'd win the rest of the season.

Given how poorly the Hawks have been playing lately, I think the Sixers moving into the 5th spot is more likely than us taking the 7th seed from the slumping Knicks.

Wednesday, March 23. Nobody important played yesterday.

What a great night for the Pacers in the standings. Atlanta let Philly off the hook (not that it's likely to matter), but everything else went our way. Our win, coupled with a Bobcats loss, is a pretty big deal for us. Milwaukee lost as well, which means we gained two games on our closest rivals for the #8 spot.

Team - Magic Number (Games Left)
    Philadelphia - 17 (11)
    New York - 15 (11)
    Indiana - X (11)
    Charlotte - 9 (12)
    Milwaukee - 9 (12)
    Detroit - 5 (11)

The Bobcats announcers mentioned tonight that 7 of our remaining 11 games are at home. We have no reason not to make the playoffs this year.
