Default The Official Playoff Projection Thread (updated post #80)

I'm going to use this thread to keep track of the projected final regular season records of each team in the hunt for the final playoff spot in the East.

Whenever something changes regarding one of the teams in the hunt (a win projected to be a loss, or vice-versa), the thread will be updated to reflect the adjusted projections:

    Here are the current projections:

    #8 Indiana: 35-47
    #9 Charlotte: 33-49
    #10 Milwaukee: 31-51

It's pretty pathetic if a team with less than 41 wins still gets into the playoffs.
In 49 states it's just basketball, but this is Indiana!

    Whose projections are these?

Twenty games under .500. I hate you.

Yep, it's pretty sad, but very likely at this point. Pretty much whoever nabs that last spot is going to be the worst playoff team of all-time, unless someone really gets hot here very soon.

Are you looking forward to the return of Michael Redd?

    He'll get their offense going.

The projections are based off of current record and strength of schedule.

It's not foolproof (doesn't take injuries into account, for instance), but it's a decent indicator.

Interestingly, the projections have remained stable since the AS break, with the exception of Charlotte losing a game. The Pacers' loss to Minnesota was negated by their win over Golden State (kinda sad, but true).

    Official Playoff Projection.

Bucks get 8th seed. The other top 7 teams shuffle slightly.

Fun thread, we should do it again sometime

A 35-win playoff berth would tie us with two other teams ('94-'95 Celtics, '83-'84 Bullets) for the second-worst-record in modern Eastern Conference Playoffs history. By modern I mean since the current 16-team format began in '83-'84. The worst record was 30-52 by the '85-'86 Chicago Bulls. That may stand forever.

By the way, over that period, we have the most finishes as the 8th seed at four.

Here's the team and win total for the Eastern Conference 8th seeds, dating back to '83-'84:

    Season | Team | Wins
    2010: Chicago Bulls, 41
    2009: Detroit Pistons, 39
    2008: Atlanta Hawks, 37
    2007: Orlando Magic, 40
    2006: Milwaukee Bucks, 40
    2005: New Jersey Nets, 42
    2004: Boston Celtics, 36
    2003: Orlando Magic, 42
    2002: Indiana Pacers, 42
    2001: Indiana Pacers, 41
    2000: Milwaukee Bucks, 42
1999: New York Knicks, 44 (extrapolated due to the lock-out)
    1998: New Jersey Nets, 43
    1997: Washington Wizards, 44
    1996: Miami Heat, 42
    1995: Boston Celtics, 35
    1994: Miami Heat, 42
    1993: Indiana Pacers, 41
    1992: Miami Heat, 38
    1991: New York Knicks, 39
    1990: Indiana Pacers, 42
    1989: Boston Celtics, 42
    1988: New York Knicks, 38
    1987: Chicago Bulls, 40
    1986: Chicago Bulls, 30
    1985: Cleveland Cavaliers, 36
    1984: Washington Bullets, 35

I've always hated that teams with losing records are in the playoffs. If you can't win at least half your games you shouldn't get into the playoffs.

Yeah, I'd take the 9th team from the West and make them the final East playoff team.

    Ouch.

An absolutely brutal night, with the Pacers losing a spot and the Bobcats gaining a spot.

Right now, the Pacers hold the tiebreaker by virtue of a 3-0 season series lead over Charlotte.

I looked this up last week and in the 80's there were many playoff teams that had less than 35 wins. A couple got in with 30.

And no way the Pacers win 34 games

Are you talking about the video or the way that the Team is playing?

    My guess is both.....

This is David West, he is the Honey Badger, West just doesn't give a *****....he's pretty bad *ss cuz he has no regard for any other Player or Team whatsoever.

Milwaukee with a 32 point lead on Philly mid-way through the fourth..

Our season is over. Thanks Danny Granger, Roy Hibbert, and most importantly Darren Collison for taking a big old steaming **** on this important stretch in the season and going into tank mode. Thanks Dahntay and Danny for making a huge deal out of nothing and most of all thanks for you worthless mother****ers who are joking around in practice. Whoever you are I hope that you aren't here next season and you don't deserve to have responsibilities like being in the NBA.

Thanks. This one is 100% on your apathetic selves. And I hope to God some of you players are reading this.

With Milwaukee's beatdown of Philly, things are looking bad for us...

    #8 Indiana: 34-48
    #9 Charlotte: 34-48
    #10 Milwaukee: 32-50

The spot is still ours to lose, but we need to right the ship RIGHT NOW.
