Cool After a confusing day, McRoberts glad that nothing's changed- Caught in the Web

Josh McRoberts was at the barber shop Thursday afternoon when his world turned upside down, if only briefly.

"I took my jacket off and didn't have my phone with me," he said with a smile. "I went to go pay and my phone was ringing and it never really rings like that and I had about 15 missed calls and 15 texts. I didn't even have to look at it. I knew what it was for.

"By the time I got out and made a few phone calls to my agent he told me, 'You got traded,' but someone was in the background was like, 'No, I just talked to Memphis, the deal's off.' It was only a few seconds where I thought I was traded."

For about an hour after the NBA Trade Deadline passed at 3 p.m. Thursday, it appeared the Pacers had traded McRoberts to Memphis and Brandon Rush to New Orleans in a three-team deal that would've netted O.J. Mayo, according to a variety of media sources. First-round picks also reportedly were involved, though it's not clear whether the Pacers would've been on the giving or receiving end or possibly both.

The deal did not go through, apparently because either Memphis or New Orleans opted to back away while the team representatives were on hold waiting to announce the trade to NBA officials.

That period of uncertainty, though relatively brief, was the hardest part for McRoberts.

"You kind of have that feeling in your stomach like, 'Man, I didn't see that coming,' so it's tough," he said. "But at the same time I didn't have time for it to really register before they said it was off.

"It was more being nervous for about an hour. Is it really off? Is it going to happen? Who knows what's going to happen? That was the toughest part. I wanted to know one way or another."

Rush, who just returned to the starting lineup at shooting guard Wednesday after Mike Dunleavy was sidelined indefinitely with a broken thumb, didn't have as much to say.

"It's a business and you've just got to go along with it," he said. "I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the year."

A free agent after this season, McRoberts has been playing particularly well under interim coach Frank Vogel, averaging 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds while shooting an astonishing 75 percent (36-of-48) from the field in the last eight games. He has started the last 14 games at power forward in what amounts to a split-minutes tag-team with Tyler Hansbrough.

Though briefly shaken by the previous day's events, McRoberts was smiling and settled after the shootaround Friday morning. He'll be back in the lineup when the Pacers host the Utah Jazz tonight.

"I'm fine," he said. "I know how my teammates and my coaches feel about me and I know the things I try to do to help us win. At the end of the day I want to win no matter where I'm at especially here.

"It was a strange day but other than that nothing's really changed."
Glad to see that he's not upset or anything- Not that I really expected him to be, but I'm happy nonetheless.

I thought you were one that wanted to get rid of him?

I don't know what you are talking about. I don't want to get rid of him. He's a good energy big that has a very, very unique skillset.

OK. My bad. I'm thinking of somebody else obviously. He's one of my favorite Pacers.

I really hope Josh is fine with it all and understands it is just a buisness and nothing personal. He has been playing really well lately. I hope he keeps it up and gets resigned in the off season. We probably won't be able to sign anyone in free agency who is a better 4 than Josh.(unless you we want to take a flyer on Zach Randolph )

Good thing he didn't take it hard. Even though I wanted that trade, Mc is still here and he needs to keep bringing his energy

I like Josh. I'd like to see them bring in a big man to work with him this summer. Maybe Kevin McHale. I'd like to see him develop some finesse moves.

Right now I think the Pacers are looking for a PF with a mid range game like Tyler's so that the offense runs the same when Tyler's not on the floor. But Josh could be a good backup center going forward.

I would argue that the offense runs better with Josh on the floor than it does with Tyler.

The fact that they are so different as players is what makes them such a good combination for that spot.

I like the ying/yang thing with Tyler and Josh. They are very different, but both seem to make it work when they get enough playing time. Tyler does a great job banging inside and shooting his 15 ft jumpers. Josh does a great job moving around within the offense and he is a much better passer and a much better dunker.

I still like Josh as the starter with Roy and Tyler off the bench to bring the pain. Then as the game goes on if Tyler is hot you just go with him.

ya, roy and josh work best as our starters , and jeff and tyler work best as our energy big men off the bench...
Foster and Hans are amazing on the boards imo together..

Plumlee reminds me of a young Dale Davis. Good rebounding and he contests shots well on defense and his offensive game is very raw just like DD's was coming out of college.

Yeah. The great thing is that once our starting bigs hit the bench and Tyler/Foster come in there isn't really a downgrade in talent.

    What do you mean?

I don't think I explained my self clear enough. There isn't a big dropoff like there usually is. I shouldn't have said talent.. I should have said energy/rebounding/consistency.

Sometimes Roy and Josh lose focus and disappear during games while Tyler and Foster don't do that as much. Josh will show flashes a brilliance (Roy too), and then not do anything for five minutes. Tyler and Foster keep going at you.

That might be a sign of youth, particularly for Josh.

I think with Roy, when he stops getting the ball he loses focus.

Tyler and Foster are older, and get the ball quite often. (In fact, I'd say we run a PnR with Tyler is about 75% of the second unit's offense. )

I'm for trading anyone that improves the team, but I have to say I'm glad McBob is still a Pacer.

He may be my favorite player on the team this season, not that he's anywhere near the best player by any stretch, I just like how he plays.
