Default Pacers in Financial Trouble - Maybe?

Take a look at the following:

Not sure I would want to own the outfit.

It seems to me 4-5 years ago I saw where they were valued at around 330 mil. Anyone else remember seeing that?

I wouldn't link this to a financial stand point.

Once we start winning and are relevant, then our value will increase because the attendance and all around interest in this team will increase.

We play in a nice arena in a nice guy with basketball history so once this team is a playoff contender, then the value will go up.

There's some teams who I don't think are of more value than the Pacers now.

Right now, we're playing like the least valuable.

That puts them right below the league-administered New Orleans Hornets and ahead of only the Memphis Grizzlies, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Milwaukee Bucks.

    The lesson here?

Don’t buy an professional basketball team in a city that starts with the letter M. Or in Indianapolis, probably.

I think at the high end we were valued by Forbes at a full 400M.

The good thing about being 269M is that is as low as we have been in quite a while. And, like the current real estate market, it will eventually recover; it will just take time and improvements to both the quality of the product on the floor and the number of spectators.

As far as the ongoing day-to-day business of the franchise the valuation by Forbes has no influence whatsoever and has absolutely nothing to do with cash flow and the viability of the franchise.

Minnesota is not a city. But Minneapolis (where the Target Center is located) is. And it starts with m.

What the Pacers need is something similar to what the GB Packers have a team owned by the citizens, They could limit the amount of ownership to no more than 5% by any one one individual and have a board of directors with 15 members making the decisions. All records to be made public, the Pacers could not move from the city as a provision. The top 15 shareholders would make up the board.

This type of ownership is prohibited in the NBA ownership bylaws. From what I understand, there has to be a majority owner that owns 51% of the team to satisfy the vetting process by the league.

As far as the NFL, Green Bay's ownership situation is grandfathered into the league bylaws that also prohibit this type of ownership.

I recall the value of the Pacers being in the 300's previously. If it was 330 as someone above suggested, that's a $60,000,000 drop.....

Pacers are not in Financial trouble. Simon is the Pacers, he is the sole owner. He is worth over a billion dollars. Their value may have tumbled, but they aren't in financial trouble.

it is my understanding that herb simon is concerned about the pacers and inheritance issues. IIRC, he wants the pacer money issues settled before he wills it to his family. it is ok to lose money for yourself, it is another thing to dump a money losing enterprise on your kids.
