Default Do teams showcase veteran players to increase their trade value?

We've had this debate before with players like TJ Ford, for example. One frequent argument is that veterans are known commodities, that other teams' decision makers already know their strengths and flaws and so won't be swayed by any showcasing.

The Nets, at least, seem to believe otherwise. When asked about Troy Murphy, Nets coach Avery Johnson admitted that they've already tried to showcase him.

Avery says Murphy will not rejoin the team. Asked why he wouldn't bring him back to increase trade value, Johnson said, "We tried that."
A short timeline of Murphy's Nets career. After missing the first few games with an injury, Murphy was installed as the starter at PF but played poorly. After that, he was dropped from the rotation, only playing sporadically through the month of November. In December, he started getting minutes again as the backup PF, with his best game as a Net coming in a win against Atlanta, contributing 8 pts and 5 reb. At that time, coach Avery Johnson singled him out for praise, saying "If we had to give a game ball tonight, it would definitely go to Murphy. He was solid for us." In hindsight, his words take on a rather different light. In January, Murphy has played only once, a blowout loss to the Wizards. The final twist came last week, when the Nets banished Murphy pending a trade.

I'm not going to claim that this settles the debate about showcasing, but this incident shows that at least one team in the league believes in that practice. It's possible that other teams (including the Pacers) do as well. To be honest, this has surprised me a bit, since I tended more to the "known commodities" school of thought.

Nope, not at all. The only thing teams really showcase with veterans is that they're healthy.

Otherwise that, other teams already know what they're getting themselves into. I mean they're veterans for a reason

Only to enhance the impact of their negative +/- rating on their respective franchises when their coach is giving the team the "best chance to win"...

That's the only sane excuse for playing Posey as much as we have.

this. vet's strengths and weakness are known. which is why nobody has a fit when danny granger has a bad shooting night or troy murphy makes a good defensive play. sometimes strange things happen. but teams know what guys are good at and what they are bad at. the only thing they care about is if the guy is physically able to play. that is what showcasing does.
