Nnamdi Asomugha contract voidedEmail Print Comments257 By Adam Schefter

Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha's contract voided and he will be allowed to become a free agent without the Oakland Raiders being able to use their franchise tag on him, according to an NFL Players Association document.

    AFC West blog
ESPN.com's Bill Williamson writes about all things AFC West in his division blog.

    • Blog network: NFL Nation

Asomugha’s deal included a little-known clause that said his contract would void if he didn’t achieve his not-likely-to-be-earned incentives in 2010 -- and he didn'’t.

His contract also contained a stipulation that if he didn’t achieve his incentives, the Raiders would agree not to designate him their franchise or transition player.

To achieve his incentives, Asomugha had to play in a greater number of defensive plays in 2010 than he did in 2009, and this season Asomugha played in only 14 games whereas he played in all 16 in 2009.

He also could have achieved his incentives by improving upon on his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season -- but he didn't have any interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season.

He will be the top defensive player available whenever free agency begins.

he will probly get more than you guys want to pay. Probly a Julius Peppers type contract.

However i do remember he was gonna leave the Radiers to go to a contender But then Al Davis wrote a huge check

Why would a cover corner come here to play in a zone?

Because I'm pretty sure he can do a hell of alot better than what Lacey and Hayden are doing.

My question was why would 'he' want to do it, not why wouldn't the Colts want him.

Maybe if our corners could actually cover anybody and weren't all a bunch of lilliputians, we'd get up on the WRs. Bring on Asomugah. Then maybe we can get a some D lineman that actually have legit size.

So, all we need is for Manning to tell Jimmy that he doesn't need to be the highest paid player in the league and while he appreciates the intent, he'd rather take less $$ (he can make it up by doing a few more commercials) and have Jimmy spend it on proven defensive players.

I expect Philly to make a run at him. We missed Sheldon Brown a lot this year and need another great cb on the opposite side of the field, that way Samuels can roam around a bit more like he's supposed too.

Why would the Raiders allow such a retarded stipulation. Oh yah, they're the Raiders.

The infamous, Al Davis, Give Your Best Player a Huge Bonus ANd Then Encourage Him To Tank A Season So He Can Be A Free Agent Again, stipulation.

    Smooth move Al.

Colts are fine at corner when healthy. Hayden and Powers can cover anyone who isn't in the upper echelon of receivers -- and there's few out there that can cover those guys, anyway. Tryon was a pleasant surprise, and Lacey looks a ton better when he's not forced into a bad matchup.

Sorry folks, there just aren't hundreds of 6-foot-3 corners out there with enough speed to match up with the best receivers in the league.

The Colts would also look a ton better in the secondary without Aaron Francisco back there.

Available money should not be spent on this type of player. You can't spend franchise money (not that this is even a possibility, anyway) on a player and put them into an anonymous zone system. The secondary only looks as good as the pass rush and run defense make them.

No idea how the financials will work out next year with everything that's going on, but any wiggle room the Colts have should go to the offensive line and defensive tackle.

Oh, and the best corner in the game is listed at 5-foot-11.

Also, Cortland Finnegan is 5-10. Asante Samuel is 5-10. Champ Bailey is 6-0. Dunta Robinson is 5-10. Leon Hall is 5-11.

These guys aren't monsters. They're just known as some of the best corners because: a) they're mega-talented; and b) they play a lot of man coverage.

It's not because they're freakishly tall.

Colts corner play used to have a reason to be maligned ... see, Tyrone Poole and Jeff Burris. This group was just hurt by injury and circumstance. They're not nearly as bad as some make them out to be.

Okay. Then just let me say I hate the cover two. I'll take physical, run-stopping LB and DT then.

    Al Davis is freaking insane.

First you fire the coach who got that team to 8-8 with nobody at QB and now you let arguably the best corner in the league because he idd not meet a few stupid incentives in his contract? If you have a shut down corner you have to think he is not going to get many interceptions because teams will just stop throwing at him.

As awesome as it would be to get Nnamdi it will never happen here in Indy. We are going to make Peyton the highest paid player ever and will not care if that means we lose guys like JA or lose the chance to sign Nnamdi.

My dream would be that Peyton takes much less so we can have more room to sign Nnamdi and then we become a more man to man defense with blitzes.
