Default New York Jets at New England - Monday Night Football - 12/6/10

(9-2) Rex Ryan has his Jets pumped up to sweep the season series against the Patriots. Can they walk the walk? Their record certainly implies that.

(9-2) Coming off a beat down of the Lions on Thanksgiving Day, the Patriots hope to get a little revenge on Monday Night.

    Time: 8:30 PM ET

Best MNF matchup in 20 years? According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it will mark just the fourth time that two teams 9-2 or better will square off on "Monday Night Football" -- and the first time since 1990.

    The others, according to Elias:

    1987: Bears (10-2) at 49ers (10-2)
    1989: Giants (9-2) at 49ers (9-2)
    1990: Giants (10-1) at 49ers (10-1)

Bill Belichick was defensive coordinator of the Giants in 1989 and 1990, which means he will have coached in three of the four games.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post...ext-monday-yet

    --
The Jets enter Monday's game against the Patriots with a 5-0 record on the road this season.

The Patriots counter with a 5-0 record at home this season, with quarterback Tom Brady having won his last 25 regular-season starts at home, which ties Brett Favre's NFL record.

How rare is it that 5-0 road team faces a 5-0 home team?

Very rare, according to Elias Sports Bureau, as this will mark just the sixth time in NFL history that it's happened. The home team has won the last three and is 3-1-1 overall.

The breakdown, according to Elias (winners in bold):

    2005: Colts (7-0) at Seahawks (7-0)
    1999: Jaguars (7-0) at Titans (7-0)
    1985: Bears (5-0) at Dolphins (5-0)
    1948: Cardinals (5-0) at Bears (5-0)
1929: Packers (5-0) at Yellow Jackets (6-0-2) (tied)

Holmes says a rookie can't cover him

    http://www.boston.com/sports/footbal..._says_a_r.html

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- If the Patriots' defensive backs needed any additional motivation against Santonio Holmes, who has come up big for the Jets since coming back from suspension, the wide receiver has given it to them.

"If I can really speak my mind, I would," Holmes said. "But just off the strength of me being a professional, I don't worry about those guys. We have to worry about what we have to do here. I don't care who they line up over there on the other side of the ball. It's our job to get the job done and play well, pitch and catch, run the ball, block those guys and get out of there with a victory."

    Not that Holmes was done.

Asked if any rookie could start against him, Holmes said, "Negative. That was proven Super Bowl Sunday two years ago, when they had a rookie [the Cardinals' Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie] following me around the whole game.

"I wouldn't do it if I was them."

FYI: Rookie corner Devin McCourty vs. Lions: Thrown on 7 times for 2 completions for 13 yards and two INTs. Three of those attempts came against Calvin Johnson, and only one of those were complete as McCourty enhanced his reputation as a legit defensive rookie of the year candidate, though Ndamukong Suh figures to win it. McCourty recorded his conference-leading 5th interception a mere month after the very first of his career. He's really come on quickly and is the only Patriots player to play every defensive snap this season. He has also played regularly on all 5 special teams units (KO, P, KOR, PR, FG).

Even if you hate Bill Belichick, you have to admit that this is freakin' hilarious, from yesterday's press conference:

    -----------
reporter: What did you do yesterday as coaches?

BB: Oh, we played golf - golf, bowling, a little badminton tournament, ate some watermelon, played cards.

    reporter: That sounds relaxing.

    BB: Yeah, it was nice.

reporter: Did you get ready for the Jets?

BB: Totally about the Jets, other than the pony rides and canoeing.

    Interesting factoid:

Going into this weekend, The Patriots are #1 in the NFL in scoring and #1 in TDs scored by their offense, despite being last in the league in the number of offensive possessions per game, ranking #22 in pass attempts/game, #12 in passing yds/game, #19 in rushing attempts/game, #16 in rushing yds/game, and #28 in time of possession.

Why? Efficicency. They are in the top 5 in the league in all of these categories: fewest INTs, fewest fumbles lost, fewest sacks allowed, fewest QB hits, fewest penalties, fewest punts, highest turnover differential.

moral: A team that is near average in moving the football and who is well below average in stopping the opposition from moving the football can be 9-2, simply by being the very best at playing smart, mistake-free situational football. The team is better than the sum of its parts, which speaks to solid leadership and excellent coaching.

The Jets didn't bother showing up to the game.

Hopefully the Pats can hang 50 on the Jets before its all said and done.

I can and I am serious. I am a jets fan with big gang green blinders on. I am very biased when it comes to my team. I could care less if they talk. Despite this loss I still stay that they are the best team in the NFL. Did we lose to Patriots? Yes. Was it by a lot? yes. In my mind they are still the best.

I was rooting for the Patriots tonight.

I never thought I'd say it, but the Jets have replaced them as my most hated team. At least the Pats won something before they became cocky ********.

Rex Ryan and the Jets haven't done **** besides getting their asses handed to them by the Colts in the AFC championship game last season.

Also, seriously complaining the Pats ran up as a Jets fan? Someone needed to shut up Rex Ryan. The entire NFL wanted to see that walking cardiac disaster get put back in his place.

I would say that anytime any team beats another team 45-3 the way my jets lost today it is running up the score. I get that people don't like Rex and the Jets. . . as fans of another team that makes perfect sense. Yet, even with this loss ( and this was a whopper for Gang Green to take) they are still 9-3. They beat Miami next week (which given this humiliating defeat they probably will) and they are in the playoffs. . . can you say that about your colts? What is the likelihood THIS YEAR that the Jets make the playoffs and the Colts lose out the the Jaguars? We will still win it all. . . if anything this just motivates us to kill the Pats in Foxboro in the playoffs.

Well I didn't watch much after the first half.

All I can say is I NEVER thought it would be such a butt kicking by either team. The Jets are better then they showed tonight.

No such thing as running up the score in professional football. Its the other teams job to stop them. Rex Ryan and the Jets would have done the same thing to the Pats.

Were they chucking up 30 yard passes? 29 pass attempts, 26 rushes. That's just running your offense. Could Brady have sat down up 38-3? Sure. Did he want to? No. Can you blame him? No.

The Patriots had three punts and settled for one FG. Damn… it coulda been 70-3. They really need to fix that.

You can't be serious. Points scored and points allowed is in the NFL rulebook for tiebreaking procedures, so please stop complaining about running up the score.

And my Colts, played the Pats a heck of a lot closer in Foxboro than your Jets did this year, but you don't see me running around being delusional.

True. you did play them closer. but you still have 6 loses. you are still behind the Jaguars in your division. The jets are 9-3, there is only one team in the AFC with a better record. They had an awful game last night, but it is only one loss. you still have to cheer for a team THIS YEAR with 6 loses so far. This is my last post on PD I will not be incited any further by a bunch of people who obviously are not going to stop every time the Jets lose. I have been on the forum 10 years. No more. Goodbye.

LMAO....If the Jets are 1% as tough as you say they are then they should be able to stop the Pats from running up the score. Period.

Running up the score is cheap in high school/college when there is a clear discrepancy between the talent of the teams. But this is the freaking NFL. These were two 9-2 teams. If the Jets were as great as their fans say then they should have had some pride and stopped the Pats from scoring.

I hope your tough team doesn't mirror your demeanor...a little friendly and perfectly warranted criticism and you pack up your bags and go home. At least the Pats and their fans embraced playing the enemy. Jets fans love it when Ryan acts like an *******, but then when everyone else gets perturbed by it they act like we are kicking an innocent dog.

Win something first, please, that's all I ask.

The Jets didn't even win their division last year. They were only in the playoffs in the first place because the Colts rested the starters in game 15.
